- MarpleTravellerMarple, United Kingdom1,481 contributionsGood Fort to VisitHousesteads is one of the best known Forts alongside Hadrians Wall. It is a National Trust property and well looked after with good storyboards and a museum giving clear details of life in Roman Times. The site is some way from the car park and facilities although the path is good it’s a challenging walk as it is both steep and exposed. It is worth making sure that you have sufficient time to throughly explore and also visit the wall itself.Visited August 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 30 October 2023
- JontheroadagainColchester, United Kingdom105 contributionsA glimse into the past.Quite a treck to get there but well worth it. The fort was very interesting and gave a good insight into how the Romans lived back in the day. I did think it was expensive to get in and it would be worthwhile considering an English Heritage membership if doing a few differant sights.Visited September 2023Travelled with friendsWritten 12 November 2023
- Charles F10 contributions4 Stars - just! The location, the fort and its significance rate 5 stars. However, English Heritage could make more of it. Some of the information boards within the fort were sun bleached and in need of renewal. The Museum was limited. There appeared to be no live archaeology at the site and none appeared planned. The excitement of new discovery was lacking. The overall feeling was 'institutional', a site run by remote control. So 4 stars only.Visited November 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 20 November 2023

We were very lucky in that we joined a guided tour immediately upon our arrival there. That is definitely the best way to see the site as a tour brings the stonework to life. Our guide was Alain who was absolutely excellent - his knowledge of the site and of the Romans generally, was really impressive. Just a few hints - Housesteads is on an exposed ridgeline so wearing warm and windproof clothing is essential.Visited March 2024Travelled with friendsWritten 9 April 2024

We went in a hail storm with a storm blowing but it was amazing. The carpark is expensive but the cafe was great and the toilets spotless.Visited April 2024Travelled with familyWritten 14 April 2024

The fort itself is amazing with some stunning views over the countryside and along Hadrian's Wall. There is quite a steep uphill walk from the carpark, but well worth the climb.Visited May 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 20 May 2024

- Kimberley P3 contributionsFantastic experienceAbsolutely wonderful trip to housteads , I am disabled and the car park is quite a walk from the fort , a lovely lady told us that a certain amount of parking was available for disabled up at the fort so we followed a single track road and parked nearby . If possible see when there is a guided tour as we weren’t aware there was one and fortunately we arrived just to join the free tour given by Allan a volunteer at the fort , absolutely amazing and extremely knowledgeable guy who knew almost everything about the fort and wall it took two hours but was well worth it if like us you enjoy factual information about these places , he interacted in a friendly way and made it interesting, a section of the wall is visible and it was a lovely day with views far and wide it was easy to imagine ourselves going back in time and viewing life in the fort . Highly recommended.Visited July 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 27 July 2024
- rexpigWilmington, Delaware282 contributionsA morning well-spentIf Hadrian's Wall is on your bucket list, this is where you can check off that item. The ruins are very well preserved and there is a free guided tour lasting about two hours, which starts at the parking lot crosses the green space and climbs up the hill to the visitor center, where you purchase your ticket. Then, it's over to the fort itself. Our guide, Allan, brought the place to life with attention to little things like the stone in the center of the entry ramp, rooms in the barracks, the communal toilet and its location, the cisterns etc. On one hand, you get a sense of the grandeur and projection of power on this northern border of the Roman Empire, and you also understand the meaning of the third verse of Kipling's poem, Recessional, while contemplating the ruins. There is a coffee shop and clean restrooms at the parking lot. Parking is paid and you can use an app or pay at the machine. Overall, a very fine place to visit.Visited July 2024Travelled with familyWritten 7 August 2024

Large camera controlled car park so you pay min £3 depending o time spent.
Very windy cold morning threatening rain for our pre-booked NT via EH website visit so was going to cancel but persuaded by NT employee at cafe to take a walk a half mile up the hill to the fort and museum.
Short wait to visit small museum which took longer than anticipated as couple in front were avid readers of every sign and poster and not feasible to get past them.
Then went up to fort and wandered around the ruins reading some of the information boards. As it was so cold needed to make our way back down to the cafe for a hot drink.
Although fort is owned by NT it is run by EH because of their expertise. Cafe run by NT and car park by Northumberland Council - hence charges.
Only a couple of tables available in cafe until they can open up upstairs. The NT employee was quite chatty (as cafe quiet) and indicated they were restricted to online bookings only and even though plenty of spaces on afternoon slots unable to take passing visitors which seems wrong when both charities are struggling for funds.
Her commute of nearly 50ml per day from Alston would be lovely in nice weather but rather grim in the rain as we found out as we continued our trip in that direction.
Unless you are interested in Roman history or long country walks this is not an ideal spot to visit

This site brings roman life in a fort on the boundary of the empire to life. Take time to wander around the site, read the information and take in the spectacular views.
The museum is also worth a visit although beware that queues can take a long time to move whilst covid restrictions inside apply.
It’s a difficult walk up the hill to get to the site so not suitable for anyone with mobility issues.

Having previously visited the fantastic fort ruins at Housesteads we did not technically visit the site this time, as in we did not pay any fees to visit and only diverted from our walk along Hadrian's Wall Path to the museum so we could stamp our booklet there.
Housesteads is an official stamping station for the Hadrian’s Wall Walk and the stamping station is located outside the museum entrance (available any time). The Museum is only a short walk from Hadrian's Wall Path but it is up/down a very steep hill!
We had bought our National Trail Hadrian’s Wall Passport booklet in advance on the website for £5.99 as didn't want to risk not being able to pick up one at the start of our walk in Carlisle. We then collected all the stamps at the seven stamping stations along the walk to fill in the spaces on our booklet. This makes a great souvenir and we plan to frame ours along with the embroidered badge/patch we bought at Segedundum as a memento of our hiking holiday.
Famous Sycamore Gap is about 90 minutes walk from Steel Rigg, then a short push onto Housesteads. At Housesteads you actually walk on the top of a walk for a short section! This was an amazing experience and not to be missed. Leaving Housesteads walk to the left, towards Steel Rigg, for a pleasant walk through the shade of a small wood and to walk on the top of the wall. See my other reviews for more information on our 8 day hiking holiday, walking coast to coast along Hadrian's Wall. We would highly recommend this walk to anyone!

World heritage site - not to be missed. Our grandson is covering Roman history in his next term project so we took the opportunity for a visit to this impressive fort whilst visiting the area. It is humbling to think that 2000 years ago the Roman builders had installed many of the things in this fort that we thing of as modern today - underfloor heating, flushing toilets, running water to name but a few items. Whilst the walk to the fort from the car park is a little steep in paces the walk is well worth the effort for both fort and museum access - as well as the optional walk along the wall itself. It is amazing that the layout of the fort and associated infrastructure is so clearly laid out and easy to access and get to see. Friendly staff were able to answer just about all of our questions and made us feel welcome throughout our visit. Far reaching views just add to the experience. A must see site.

We did this as one of a few during a weekend away. Please do note, it’s quite a steep walk to get there!!!
But once done very well worth it, some great views and you can see the main wall and its route stretching away from either side.
Sadly Covid, meant you could not explore from the ruins to the wall itself, with out exiting and then going to the walls.
Myself, loved that the 2000 year old drainage was visible still and WORKED!!!

We visited Housesteads, along with several other forts in an exploration of Hadrian's Wall. As English Heritage members, this is an ideal corner of the country to take advantage of free entry.
Our visit coincided with Storm Dennis & this particular site is high up & very exposed so we didn't stay as long as planned!

We visited the Fort and Hadrian’s Wall for the first time this morning. As members of the National trust we just needed to pay £3 car parking as entry was included in our membership. The man in reception was friendly and told us useful information about walking along some of the wall and what to find in the visitors centre. The walk to the visitors centre was very picturesque with views into the far distance as it was such a clear and sunny day. The visitors centre again, had more friendly staff and there was a dressing up box and books for the kids to explore. We watched the short film, looked at the artefacts and then went out to explore. We all really enjoyed looking around the fort and imagining what is was like (with some help from the film). We then walked along a bit of Hadrians Wall with more stunning views. Once we returned the gift shop had some lovely items, food choices were limited which may have been the time of year. We will definitely go back as we all had a great time.

Easy to park, with bays of all sizes for different vehicle types. There is a lovely cafe and toilets run by the National Trust as you go in and then a 0.5mile walk winding up the hillside to the Roman Fort, where you can walk around the outside for free. If you want to go inside you need tickets from English Heritage, who have a small museum and shop at top. If you want to see a large museum full of lots of artefacts then go to Vindolandia. It is quite expensive to go in, but it does allow you the chance to legally walk on a small section of the wall. More sign boards around the site would be useful, but the guide book is well done. Super friend staff at NT & EH sites and very knowledgeable.

Having watched the Horrible History's The Romans, we decided to do a bit of real "home school" and visit Housesteads. We had booked a time slot which luckily was a bit flexible as we didn't realise we had a 15 min hike up a hill to get there. First stop the latrines of course to see if the Horrible Histories scene was true... it was. Then a wander around the ruins, taking in the spectacular view. Good information around to try and help us visualise was it was like. Spent about 1 hour here. Due to Covid-19 the visitor centre was shut but the little museum was open ( 3 families at a time only ) and port-a-loos at the top.

Parking is a rip off to start with. You've no option but to park there so you're looking at a minimum of £4. Your registration number is recorded on entering the carpark and you have to pay on leaving. Even English Heritage and National Trust members have to pay to park. That all felt to be a bit of a swizz.
It's quite a long, steep walk from the carpark to the site itself. If you have mobility issues you will struggle to get to both the fort itself and certainly then around the fort ruins. I have arthritic knees and I struggled.
As another reviewer has commented, the signage is poor to non-existent. There's a largish building when you arrive which we had assumed was a visitor centre/entrance/cafe/toilets but it was all closed, presumably it's only open in high season. Certainly this was the only site which was actually open midweek - the others seemed to be open weekends only. I guess you'd get a much better experience (although it would be busier) visiting in spring/summer.
You have to walk across to the fort to get to the loos which are just two portaloos, one of which is a disabled one. There's no handwashing facilities which is quite honestly a disgrace.
The entrance fee is £10 but I bet plenty of people simply look around the site without paying. £10 is too much for what's on offer. You have to go into a small gift shop type building to one side which is acting as the entrance where a couple of disinterested women are on the desk and I'd put money on it that neither of them were keeping on eye on who was coming to the site and wouldn't be running out to challenge any non-payers. I'm not for a second suggesting people go and don't pay, I'm highlighting how badly organised it seems to be.
Vindolanda is a much better experience.

Hi -I'm very keen to visit the wall before I get much older with my husband and son. I have not yet registered disabled for car parking but I really should as I have arthritis and lymphoedema. Will I be able to walk around at least some of the fort? Are there seating places, access to toilets? How far is it from the car park?I am thinking of coming late Sept how far in advance should we book to coincide with holiday accommodation? Thanks so much if you can help.

I only really want to take a look at the wall and fort. Will I still be required to pay the museum fee?
Written 6 July 2019
Hi There
There are parts of the wall that you can visit for free but these places have limited parking and a bit hard to find..
The Fort is really worth a visit though and yes you do have to pay.
Have a Great Trip.

Is the car park here open after the closing hours of the Roman Fort? My husband and I plan on visiting here but will be arriving later in the day. We will tour the fort first during operational hours but probably will not have time to visit Hadrians Wall before the Fort Closes. We were wondering does the car park also close or can we leave our car parked in the lot while we visit Hadrian's Wall?

Hi
I’m walking some of Hadrians Wall in June and wondered if there were any short guided tours of highlights such as Birdoswald roman fort, Housesteads, Vinlandia which would help us fully appreciate the sites?
Thanks

Hi,
Housesteads does have ad-hoc volunteer guides on site but these can't be booked in advance and may not be there on the day you visit. There are some interpretation panels around the site, a very useful guide book and an informative museum with a short introductory film show - a must at the start of your visit.
Hope this helps,

Can you just roam around for free without going into the fort or do you have to pay in at the car park entrance
Written 24 March 2018
If you approach the fort by walking the Wall, you can visit it and wander around with no charge. However, there is a Visitor Center and parking lot where you normally would enter if you drive to the Fort. Here you pay or use your English Heritage Cards. It is a fairly easy uphill walk about 15 minutes up towards the fort.
But do not miss the very good museum up near the fort. To me this was worth the price of admission.
The Fort itself is well mapped with signs letting you know what you are looking at.
Enjoy!

Does anyone know if this site has a stamp?
Written 7 September 2017
Yes, the National Trust will stamp the passport at the Visitor Centre. It's a jointly run site - English Heritage & National Trust
Written 25 September 2017
Is there free entry for National Trust members?

Hi,
Dogs on leads are allowed everywhere except in the museum.
There are loops in the walls of the museum if owners want to tie their dogs to them while they look around inside, and a bowl of water to keep their dogs hydrated. There is free access Hadrian's Wall from the car park, but don't forget there is a charge and you will need to collect tickets if you want to see the Fort & museum.
