Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

With no cost and a tour, this makes for a great stop. Next to the church In the main square, the house has lovely rooms, and the restoration of the ceilings and period pieces are great. Loved walking the grounds...what a lovely place.

Tunja is the only place in Colombia where you can see multiple homes from the 16th century. They provide a fascinating glimpse into the private lives of the well-off Spanish who first arrived in this territory. This magnificent mansion is next door to the Cathedral on Bolivar Square and is only COP$3.000 for a tour. Don’t miss the ceiling paintings, with an eclectic mix of animals and plants, both native to Colombia as well Europe and Africa. The Spanish tiles in the dining room show a decidedly Islamic influence. On the lower level of the house is the tourist office for Tunja. They are a wealth of information for the whole area. If someone at the front desk doesn’t speak English, someone else in the desks off to the side should be able to assist you.

Very interesting mansion with a great history. Some rooms are laid out as they would have been many years ago. It is a guided tour which you need to enable you to understand everything you are seeing. The gardens are well worth a visit as as they are very well looked after. The toilets are also in the garden area.

we had the same problem here that we had at the vargas house-basically don't come too early or too late in the day, even though on the websites it says they are open for business, they are not. we waited in line for 20 minutes only to be told by the tour guide once she came out that it was closed for the day (!). there were at least 15 or 20 of us standing there and some people had been waiting a long while. luckily we were able to come back 2 days later but it wasn't open when it said it would be open (on the internet and also from the sign posted at the entrance that we saw 2 days before when we were originally turned away) and we were really put out. but we returned at 11am and it was open so we dashed in. it's an escorted tour with lots of fun information and some nice views of the countryside out the back. as with the other mansion in town, the murals are top notch! from the 1500s and depictions done of animals from africa that had never been seen-only copied from books-by the artist. fun. my understanding is that rendon was influenced by vargas with his animal depictions and mythological-themed murals. again, really enjoyed it but the city needs to do a better job advertising and supporting their rich cultural heritage-such amazing history but it felt like an afterthought given the run-around we experiences trying to get in to see these places.

In spite of the hardness of the city there are certain building like this that are worthy to see. The patios, the murals, it is one of the best example of colonial domestic spaces in Colombia, a fine building that you cannot see in Bogotá.

I had visited this historic building more than thirty years ago and this time I found that the gardens are very well kept, and that it should be one of the places every one should visit when they come to Tunja.

We walked into this place and met a a lady and an old man who were itching to help us in this small city.
They arranged for the resident Tourist policeman to show us around. There was no cost.
A private tour followed by the lovely police officer.
Everywhere was locked up but he opened all the doors and gave us a great tour in English.
Afterwards he showed us into his office and gave us maps of the city.
Our experience there made us feel very special at this historic and beautiful building.

The home of one of the city founders, this classic home from the 1500's gives amazing insight to how the upper crust lived.

Definitely worth a few hours - this historic house has plenty of interesting artifacts and architectural features. The home has a nicely restored courtyard that was typical for homes of the well-to-do. Many of the rooms still have impressive painted walls and ceilings that were another way to show off wealth and power.
