    Fascinating
All had a really good time here. My youngest (9) was fascinated and wished the tour was longer. We were surprised that it was so warm in the tunnel. We could have asked more questions but were aware that the 30mins rapidly passed. Excellent good in the cafe as well. I would put a second screen showing all the uk energy being used in the visitor centre. That alone was really interesting.
Thank you for your review. Its great to hear your group enjoyed the tour, our aim is to make it suitable for all ages. Great idea to have the screen showing electric insights in the visitor centre, as well as the content being available online on the electric insights website.

    How it should be done
Stopped here for a bite of lunch and was Initially underwhelmed by a very basic menu. Ended up being very glad we did. It looked and tasted like the food was prepared with care and attention to detail. Our tea came in lovely proper cups and saucers and we received several offers of more hot water to top up our pot. The cafe was immaculate and the staff were warm, helpful and welcoming. We discussed how well run the place appeared to be as we dined. Only regret was not telling the lady with the fabulous sleeve of ink that she had the most beautiful complexion I’ve ever seen.
Thank you for such a lovely review of our Cafe. We have chosen to keep it simple, so we can as you say prepare all the food and drink with care and attention to detail. It so nice to have the teams dedication to excellent service recognised by our visitors, along with the levels of cleanliness of the cafe and centre. We hope to welcome you back to Cruachan Visitor Centre

Great day out for the full family!
We booked to visit when we were passing on our way to Oban, and so glad we did. I would definitely recommend booking prior to visiting as people were getting turned away whilst we were there as it was fully booked. We arrived early and stopped of at the cafe for lunch, which was reasonably priced with good portion sizes. Everyone thoroughly enjoyed there meals, especially the lentil and sweet potato soup that was delicious, I could easily be tempted to come back just for the soup alone 🤣. The whole experience of going into the hollow mountain was amazing. The 2 tour guides had a fantastic rapport together, with great banter between them. The tour was fun whilst being very informative and they actively encouraged you to ask any questions you had regarding the power station. One of the tour guides then spoke to my son (15yo) about his interest in going on to do Engineering at school. Would definitely recommend visiting!!
Thank you for your lovely review and comments. We do advise booking in advance, as spaces on each tour are limited, so its great that you stopped in to do so! Its great to hear you enjoyed the café, the soups are very tasty, we hope you get a chance to come back to try another variety.

Don't miss this look at modern power creation.
The tour inside the mountain was wonderful. The guides were friendly and cheerful, and so informative. They gave a great talk AND answered all the questions our group added. The view of the generator chamber is impressive, especially when you learn none of it is natural, the whole cavern was excavated for this purpose. I was unfamiliar with this form of hydropower and I learned so much. Don't skip the displays in the Visitor Center either, there's a lot of information there. Also nice, clean toilets. Notes: Book ahead - people get turned away often because the day's tours are all full. Each tour is only a few people, just what will fit in the one van. Note again: it's very warm in the tunnel and chamber. Leave behind in the free lockers your coats and scarves and hats.
Thanks for your lovely review. We really appreciate your kind comments about our tour guides. Thank you for highlighting the advice of pre booking for a guided tour as spaces are limited on each tour.

    Great visit for families
What a fabulous experience we had here! The quality of the tour was excellent - the tour guide was fantastic, so knowledgeable and engaging. Our two children, aged 9 and 8, thoroughly enjoyed the tour and we all learned lots. The visitor centre is good and the cafe is good too, with lovely views over the loch.
Thanks for a lovely review. We always try to adapt the guided tour for the audience, its great to know the children enjoyed the tour and learned lots.

    Fantastic experience and outstanding staff
We visited today on our way to Oban and thoroughly enjoyed the experience. It was very informative and interesting. I would like to point out how wonderful the staff are. Everyone we met was very friendly and very helpful. I don't think I've been anywhere in a while with such great staff. We shall return on our next visit 'up north'
Thank you for such great comments about the visitor centre team! We try our best to make sure every visitor has a great experience, we look forward to welcoming you back to Cruachan Visitor Centre.

    Trip to Cruachan power station
An amazing experience, not to be missed. Fantastic knowledgeable staff who have a passion for renewable energy. The coach trip into the tunnels and to the four huge turbines was breathtaking - the skill of those that built the power station is something to behold. Highly recommended.

    Brilliant
Had a great time in the hollow mountain! Our guide was interesting and informative and it was fascinating to find out how it all works. Our younger kids enjoyed the trail in the visitor center. We also walked up to the reservoir. It was quite steep but the views were amazing.
Thanks for leaving your review. The Easter trail round the exhibition was popular during the school holidays. Glad you enjoyed the walk to the Dam, we agree the views are amazing!

    A must!
We thought this place was great. The tour is fairly short, but it is informative and enjoyable. The drive into the mountain is a little mind-blowing! The exhibition is great but more than anything - the staff here, without exception, were fantastic, so friendly and welcoming. Could not fault it.

Party of four adults, we where all quite disappointed in the hollow mountain experience. We paid to go on the guided tour on which the guides where good and knowledgeable. We where taken on a bus so far down to a viewing platform. Just expected to see more than we did. We did have some lovely soup in the cafe and the gift shop for me was the best part of it, lovely items and very good prices.

We are sorry to hear you were disappointed, not seeing as much as you had expected when you were on our Guided tour. As Cruachan is an operational power station we have to balance permitting access to the general public without affecting the operation of the power station. Thank you for your kind comments on our café and gift shop.

Hmmmm. I don’t know what I expected but I was underwhelmed. You go into the ‘shop’ put any bags and coats into the lockers, then go outside to be picked up by a little 15 seater minibus which takes you the 1km tunnel into the mountain.
There’s a guide who tells you interesting facts and then you get out the bus and walk up some steps into a big glass viewing platform where you can see the big cavern inside the mountain and the 4 electricity turbines.
A few more facts on how it all works and then back to the bus to drive back to the shop / cafe / exhibition.
Apparently many years ago you used to get down to the ‘shop floor’ which I imagine made you feel a bit more ‘involved’ but standing in the glass room above it all was a bit rubbish. They kept going on about how hot and noisy it was but you didn’t feel any of it up there in that room.
There was no option to go up to the dam. I think you can walk it on a nice day but a wee Land Rover excursion up to it would have been great.
You really didn’t get the feeling of it being a working power station at all.
The staff were nice and the cafe had a nice view over the loch. If you’ve got an hour to fill it’s something to do in the rain but do book in advance as the days tours were fully booked by 10am.

We are sorry to hear your visit to Cruachan left you felling underwhelmed. Our aim is for every visitor to enjoy their time at Cruachan and to have an exceptional experience. Our visitor centre is designed to provide an easy to navigate experience for our customers, entering via Reception so we can help visitors as they arrive. There is no vehicle access to the dam for members of the general public, the single track access road is part of a working hill farm with livestock. Thank you for your kind comments about the team.

Looking at the website it sounded like a really good experience, however it is not worth the money for the trip into hollow mountain. We read all the information about the power station before the tour, it’s a shame as the tour guides and staff are very friendly, but you literally have a short journey and then the tour guide tells you what you’ve read and you look at four yellow tanks at a distance. Think it should just be used as a cafe and a bird spotting stop, wouldn’t recommend a long distance travel to here.

We are sorry that you felt the guided tour did not meet your expectations. Our guided tours aim to bring to life the information available about the power station, whilst deep inside 'The Hollow Mountain', enhancing visitors knowledge of how Pumped Storage Hydro Power Stations operate. The tours are designed to be suitable for all ages, with the team happy to provide more information either on tour or in the visitor centre. We hope the café and gift shop enhance the customer experience for those visiting Cruachan for a guided tour.
