- Gail DYork, United Kingdom5 contributionsWhat a treat.Attended the gin school and had a whale of a time. Entertaining, interesting and educational. And lots of gin! What's not to love?! Plus I took away a bottle of my very own unique gin that is surprisingly delicious (although not as good as the real Rare Bird of course!)Visited December 2022Travelled as a coupleWritten 17 December 2022
- rachelMarket Weighton, United Kingdom5 contributionsA great activity with friendsExcellent afternoon at Rare Bird with two friends. We all made a bottle of gin and learned so much from Matt about the history and process. We loved trying the different Gins that Rare Bird make, all delicious. The building is gorgeous too, really interesting stories about the history of Malton. My father in law has previously attended a gin school session and it was highly recommended by him, and now me too! Thank you for an excellent afternoon Rare Bird - we enjoyed every drop/minute!Visited January 2023Travelled with friendsWritten 29 January 2023
- GCo4 contributionsExcellent Afternoon ExperimentingWould like to thank Matt for a fab afternoon, his knowledge of not only the business but the town history was great to hear. He made it fun and enjoyable which was the main key for me. We had complimentary drinks served by the lovely Christina so we could taste the Rare Birds products with different tonics which we might not have put together. Definitely an experience to remember and of course left with our very own made bottle of gin. We will be back to sit in the bar area the next time we're in town. Thanks again. - IH8 contributionsWhat a unique experience in MaltonReally enjoyed this afternoon, lots of insightful knowledge on the history and the process of making different gins, I learnt a lot. Then upstairs to brew which was a very unique experience and I would recommend it! We had lots of Rarebird gin to drink along the way too what more could you want... maybe just a few crisps or nuts to nibble on but apart from that, fantastic thank you!Visited February 2023Written 27 February 2023
- SorenSozzaDLondon, United Kingdom16 contributionsExcellent experience as a gift or for couples or friendsHad a fantastic afternoon at the gin school, learning about gin distillery and making our own gins. Recommend doing this and do take the bus or taxi as you have a few glasses and gin and mixers. Great value for money and we bought more bottles of gin as gifts tooVisited March 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 17 March 2023
- Leon TamblingManchester, United Kingdom13 contributionsA Reyt propped tret!My wife Ruth received a Gin Distillery School voucher as a Birthday present in 2022. We visited on 21/09/2022 and the whole experience from entering the properly Vintage premises was amazing! We were served our choice of gin and tonics and Matt gave us a tour of the distillery. Matt explained the details of the spirits used and the whole process. We then went to the ‘Gin school’ that was also fantastically set up and we had our own small distilling pot. Ruth had already selected her botanicals as a ‘gin connoisseur! Ha! And we set about making our Team T gin under Matt’s excellent instruction. We were also tret to more double gins of our choice! Well being In Yorkshire it would have been rude to just offer one drink! Tret ya sen! It’s reyt good! Definitely worth a visit if you like gin! The Vanilla Spiced is my fave! Matt & your team, thank you for an amazing experience! I’ve just emailed you another order and remembered to leave a review. 11/10. A totally top gin extravaganza! Cheers guysVisited September 2022Travelled soloWritten 24 March 2023
- Isaac K1 contributionA Must DoExcellent afternoon from start to finish. Matt was passionate about gin, witty and down to Earth. Couldn’t have asked for more. Plus some lovely Gin and Tonics made by Viv, with some brilliant recommendations.Visited April 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 13 April 2023
- J1nglebyLondon, United Kingdom46 contributionsRare Bird’s ‘gin school’ was a fantastic and fascinating afternoon’s funThis was an excellent experience. Matt is very knowledgeable and gives a lot of fascinating background on gin and his experience of setting up the distillery. The Gin School experience - selecting botanicals to make your own gin, with Matt’s guidance on a range of how much to use for each to get enough but not too much flavour - was fantastic. A birthday gift for my brother in law, four of us did this and we all loved it.Visited April 2023Travelled with friendsWritten 24 April 2023
- sue fHornsea, United Kingdom17 contributionsMake your own gin with Rare BirdThis is a small distillery in a lovely corner of Malton. The visit lasts about three hours and comprises a talk about the distillery and its gins. You then get a chance to make your own gin, choosing your ingredients from a wide range of options, all of which are carefully explained to you. There is only a small number of people on each visit so everybody gets their own mini-still and related gin-making paraphernalia. As you go along, you have a chance to drink all three of the Rare Bird gins (which are all lovely). The staff are knowledgeable, friendly and very helpful. It's all great fun and you get to take home your own gin at the end. This gives a real insight into the science of gin making in a hands on way. Highly recommended as a treat for yourself or a present for a gin lover.Visited April 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 27 April 2023

We had a really pleasant afternoon, on our first ever Gin Distillery visit.
There was just the right amount of technical ,historical and industry info etc
Plenty of good guidance in helping us to create our own bespoke gin in a mini still. Looking forward to trying it on Christmas Day with the family.
A visit here is highly recommended.

I wanted to get my friend a 60th birthday gift she would appreciate and remember. Being a rare bird herself I thought I had found the perfect present in the Rare Bird Distillery gin school experience, it proved to be a real winner!
From the moment we arrived and delivered of our first generous gin sample, we couldn't have asked for a warmer welcome. Owner Matt's knowledge of the industry including the history was fascinating, and he was very patient in answering our many questions! We learnt about the gin making process and lots about how his business runs. We then went upstairs accompanied by more delicious samples of gin to our own personal mini gin still where we created a bespoke blend from a huge variety of ingredients under Matt's expert guidance. More generous samples of gin were offered whilst waiting for our own to drip through at which point it was bottled, labelled and sealed.
This is an amazingly good value experience. Several large G&T's offered/included, a full size bottle of gin to take away and all of Matt's knowledge, priceless!!
Thank you for a wonderful afternoon.

Great fun, good value and very educational. We would highly recommend this experience. And you come away with a bottle of gin created and distilled by your own efforts.

My visit to Rare bird was a birthday gift and was a first class day. The staff were both friendly and understood Gin making. The advice for making my own Gin was valued and I was able to produce a very drinkable bottle. They have retained a copy of the contents and I wil be ordering more for me and as gifts. Many thanks, it was great fun.

We went on Friday to a gin school at Rare Bird as it happened the only other person had to cancel so my wife and I had a private lesson from Kristina - it was excellent.
Lots of historical facts and story of the start up all while tasting their 3 Gins - all of which were good.
Then upstairs to where the magic happens. The school is such a cool place and we mixed our own concoctions under the guidance and nose of Kristina.
It’s a great experience and well worth the money - you can do it as a pair and make just one 70cl bottle but we did it as individuals which made it competitive!
Great fun and highly recommended.

We missed being able to attend the Rare Bird Gin School in March 2023 but heard so many good things about it that we added Malton into our October 2023 UK visit. It was absolutely worth every single minute! Matt is an amazing distiller as well as an incredible teacher. We learned about everything from the history of gin, the complexities of the UK craft spirits industry, and the complex flavor calculus that goes into creating both a widely marketable gin and a micro distilled one-off personal favorite gin. My husband and I created vastly different bottles, each of which is our personal ideal. We couldn’t have asked for a better instructor. Thank you, Matt and Christine, for an outstanding evening!

How much does it cost to purchase a bottle of gin that's made to your specifications after the event(my daughter is hoping to bring me for my 60th)

Sorry for the delay. The gin tasting/making class cost us about £85 each. This included several gin and tonics through the sessions as well as equipment use and interesting info. The bottle that you make is yours to take away. (included)
