    Enjoyable visit
We absolutely loved our visit to Scampston. The walled gardens, whilst not in full flower yet, we’re beautiful and well tended. The parkland was so peaceful and beautifully landscaped and was a joy to explore. The cafe totally surprised us. The food was amazing and the service just brilliant. Thoroughly recommended.
Thank you for taking the time to leave us a review. We are delighted to hear you enjoyed your visit and hope we can welcome you back now we are in full bloom! Thank you again.

    An enjoyable day
Recently visited and we were definitely not disappointed. The gardens were amazing , huge credit to the gardeners, made our way over to the hall for the tour, we were greeted by the butler and made very welcome, we were then shown round for a full hour by a lovely lady , she was very knowledgeable and made the tour interesting . The hall was spectacular, most definitely worth the visit, will return at a later date as I am sure we did not get to see everything
Thank you for taking the time time to leave us a review. All the staff at Scampston work so hard to ensure every visitor has an enjoyable experience and I am delighted to hear you enjoyed your time with us. We look forward to welcoming you in the future, and many thanks again!

    Cafe let this venue down
Gardens and walks are lovely. Cafe let this venue down. Ordered tea and coffee and waited 25 minutes for it to arrive. Even then it was only after another table had complained twice about the wait. Cafe employs young people which I applaud but please give them training and on the job supervision.
Thank you for taking the time to leave us a review. I am pleased to hear you enjoyed the gardens. The cafe do work very hard each day sometimes under extensive pressure to deliver good service. The feedback is usually exceptionally good so I apologise you did not feel this was the case during your visit. All feedback is taken very seriously. Thank you again for your review, I do hope we can welcome you to Scampston in the future.

    Brilliant
We thoroughly enjoyed our time here, spend several hours wandering around the garden, having lunch, wandering around the garden, having tea .... It's a great place, lots of architectural plants, topiary, grasses, etc. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend the garden and the cafe was great.
Thank you for taking the time to leave us a review. All the staff work exceptionally hard and it is lovely to have those efforts recognised. We look forward to welcoming you to Scampston again in the future.

    Excellent experience all round
Great visit to Scampston - gardens, house visit, grounds and cafe all excellent. Entry through membership of Historic houses so excellent value. Lunch and afternoon tea great value with large portions. The tour of the house, hosted by Craig and Anne, was the best we have experienced across many visits and bought the history of the house to life. Oh and the sun shone too..
Thank you for taking the time to leave us a review. We are delighted to hear you enjoyed your visit, everyone works so hard and it is really lovely to hear those efforts appreciated. Thank you again for leaving a review, we hope to welcome you again in the future!

    Lovely walled garden
The walled garden is beautiful and well kept with some interesting planting and was great to wander through on a sunny day. You can buy some of the featured plants too. The house tour took 1 hour and was informative and historical but a little too focused on the facts and paintings (for us) we enjoy hearing anecdotes about eccentric family figures, funny events, the ghost most old houses seem to have! We ate lunch in the cafe, it’s nicely decorated in a country vibe with plenty of tables inside and out. My smoked chicken sandwich with jalapeño mayo was huge and delicious. My partner had the croissant which was lukewarm with cold cheese and ham inside so he wasn’t impressed. Scampston is certainly worth visiting with its beautiful garden, plenty of parking, it’s easy to find, has a nice cafe and is a great stop off point on the way to the coast. Free for HH members.

A lovely visit with lasting memories.
It is about 20 years since we last visited, and the gardens have developed beautifully - well done to Andy and the team, (I think the head gardener is called Andy - if not, well done anyway!!). Lots of colours, contrast, textures shapes and movement in the gardens. Marjorie gave us a not to be forgotten tour of the parkland and grounds, she was engaging as a person and guide. We enjoyed being 'locked out' of our return on the tour, and needed to be rescued by the staff, after the production team of Bangers and Cash setting up nearby had a mishap of communication. (They were also allowing large sections of wrapping material fly away, which we collected en route). So an unexpected adventure, (well, nearly!). Café staff were friendly, and the decaff coffees were lovely and strong tasting - just right. Would recommend to all ages, and look out for the tours and activities and so on on the website when planning when to come. We were pleased to hear how many members of the community are helping, and especially involving people with moderate learning difficulties. So thanks for a lovely visit to all.
Thank you for taking the time to leave us a review. I am delighted to hear you enjoyed your visit to Scampston (the head gardener is called Andy) and could see the progress that has been made in the gardens. Apologies for the little miscommunication with the event organisers - it all adds to the fun! So pleased you enjoyed the heritage tour with Marjorie, the volunteers work so hard out of pure passion and it is so wonderful they get the recognition they deserve Thank you again for the lovely feedback, we hope to welcome you to Scampston again soon!

    Beautiful gardens, fantastic food
Walled gardens were absolutely beautiful as was the parkland. Only slightly disappointed to find that the rockery wasn't planted up but hope this is a work in progress. Also unable to access the aviary that is listed in the map. However the spectacular lunch that was 5 star made up for it. Would definitely recommend.
Hi Alison, Thank you so much for your kind review! We're delighted to hear that you enjoyed the walled gardens and parkland, and that your lunch left such a positive impression on you. We appreciate your understanding regarding the rockery, and you're right—it is a work in progress, with exciting plans in place for the future - we can't wait to see it restored to its former glory. The aviary is a historic site highlighted on the map to show where it used to sit so is never somewhere visitors can access. Your recommendation means a lot to us, and we look forward to welcoming you back soon! Many thanks, Katie

This house, garden and park is located close to Malton in North Yorkshire. There is plenty of free parking and staff and volunteers were friendly and helpful. You can visit the gardens alone or buy a ticket which includes a 1 hour guided tour of the house. We did the latter and enjoyed our tour, but sadly the guide seemed to lack knowledge about the relationship between the house and the gardens. The house itself is compact and delightful with Georgian and Victorian renovations and more recent restorations which were very well done. It sits in a Capability Brown landscape which you can walk around and includes a walled garden which was given a modern makeover in 1999. There are also plant sales and a cafe which had a limited menu, but good quality food. My only disappointment was the cafe:

1. Not one of the delightful looking cakes and scones was dairy free, nor was the soup or most of the sandwiches. After some discussion a chicken and bacon sandwich was prepared for me and this was excellent.

2. The queue to place your order and pay system, rather than table service, led to a long queue through the middle of the cafe, especially for a coach party of elderly ladies. This arrangement seemed inconvenient to both staff and customers alike and could do with some improvement.

Thank you for leaving a review of your recent visit to Scamspton. We appreciate your suggestions for improvements. Unfortunately, table service isn't something that we are able to do at the moment due to the amount of staffing that it requires. However, we are always looking for ways to improve our service for customers so we will be sure to look into this further. Thanks again for your feedback.

Visited mid October, lovely grounds to wander around within the walled garden. Perhaps would have been a bit more colourful in the summer. I would say more benches are desperately needed scattered around the gardens. We also walked one of the trails (one was partly shut due to flooded area), really enjoyed our few hours there. The cafe was well organised for COVID safety, take away food was readily available but few benches to sit and eat them, food was very reasonably priced. Would recommend a visit for

I visited last week with friends. We had coffee in the Cafe before exploring the gardens, which had a great range of late-summer interest plants. There was a guided walk by one of the volunteers, Steve, who told us the history of the house and garden and pointed out lots of things of interest. The money for the guided walk goes to their local charity. We will definitely visit again as I can see that there will be lots of interesting things no matter what season

Thank you for sharing some feedback about your recent visit. We're thrilled to hear that you had a great visit and that you were able to attend our guided heritage walk. The walled garden has different planting interests throughout the season, definitely worth visiting again in June time for a contrast!

We stopped here on a mid to late August Friday morning prior to heading further north. There is a large grassy car park across the road from the entrance. It was somewhat slow actually getting in but £8.50 for the gardens and grounds is good value but was free to us as HHA members.

The walled gardens had pleasant borders but not too much colour and understandably they were probably a little past their best for the year. Nevertheless there were some nice seats to admire the neat topiary and water features including the fountain. In the adjacent conservatory there was an excellent illustrated history of the gardens which was well worth seeing.

Unusually for me, I enjoyed the lovely grounds more than the gardens. The Capability Brown designed Palladian Bridge at the end of the water lingers in the memory and gives great photo opportunities. A nice walk to the 'ice home' which had a helpful explanatory note. On the way back you walk past a Sweet Chestnut tree from the 1700's - what that must have seen over the years.

There is a good sized cafe just inside the entrance with decent toilets. Regrettably it seems grey squirrels were introduced to Yorkshire by an owner of yesteryear as per a display board.

In summary, Scampston is well worth a visit and the gardens and grounds are still clear in my memory whereas if you visit quite a few in a short time, some fade somewhat in the memory but not Scampston.

The gardens are absolutely stunning at the moment, awash with gorgeous summer colours combined with various drifts of grasses swaying in the breeze. We had the most enjoyable afternoon here on Friday, from the minute we were welcomed by the friendly girl at the kiosk until our farewell from her as we left. Covid19 restrictions are in place at the moment so the Hall and cafe are closed to visitors, but there were hardly any visitors around so it felt as if we almost had the gardens to ourself. The way the walled garden is laid out it’s as if you are going from room to room, with seats placed so you can sit and enjoy each different scene. Added to this are the beautiful parkland trails for a tranquil walk.

We also visited last October when the colour scheme of the gardens was so different, but equally spectacular with autumn hues.

Highly recommended - we will be back!

We had such a lovely day exploring this wonderful gem of a garden. The staff were knowledgeable and friendly and the entry price was incredibly reasonable at £22 for a family of 5. We started at the lovely cafe and can thoroughly recommend the scones and chocolate brownies. There were also lots of high quality plants for sale. The walled gardens are so wonderful to walk round and sit in. The pond full of newts was a extra bonus and my daughter loved watching them swim up to the surface to bask in the sun. We took a picnic and there were plenty of fab spots to choose to eat it including specific picnic areas with benches. My teenage and tweenage daughters were sadly too old for the pirate climbing area and woodland games table (although they couldn't resist the balance beam!) but I would imagine littler ones would love them. We all (3 generations) really enjoyed our first visit and it won't be our last. We definitely want to return when the house is open so we can try out the tour.

Visited on a Saturday when the house was closed and there was a festival in part of the main parkland. We knew about the house, but the festival was unexpected - perhaps missed the latter on the web site. No matter, it did not detract too much from our enjoyment of the grounds, albeit the musical accompaniment was anything but quiet! Given the festival we were given a £1 discount as some aspects of the park were inaccessible. All the foregoing was explained by a very helpful lady in the payment kiosk. As to the gardens themselves, it was nice to see the ‘rooms’ and architecture of the layout - ground breaking in some respects. However, the gardens lacked colour and were largely lacking in interest. As to the rockery it was a non event given it is being restored due to invasive weeds. The parkland itself made for a pleasant if not limited walk (due to the festival). A bonus was the cafe which was very nice.
So overall a mixed bag, the gardens lacked the wow factor we were expecting but still worth a visit.

Thank you for your feedback on a recent visit to Scampston. Our walled garden has been designed in a particular planting style by Piet Oudolf, so naturally it isn't to everyone's taste. We appreciate you visiting us and hopefully we might see you at Scampston again once our rockery has been fully restored.

Amazing Walled Garden with a delightful Tearoom, near to Malton, the Garden was extensively and recently refurbished after falling into total ruin after the Second World War, the interesting story of which is told in the re-built Glasshouse within.

Interesting planting and skilful topiary and a varied Potager garden within the Walled Garden all add to the experience, plants sales also available .. good value too!

Estate walks available and a visit to the Tearoom highly recommended, with very good prices, home made produce and large portion sizes .. what is not to like?!

My first visit and I was bowled over at how large, well planned, and well maintained the walled garden was given the current situation - a credit to the gardening team. It was well worth the admission price. We spent 2hrs just in the walled garden and cafe area and ran out of time to see the rest of the parkland but will be back I hope to see the rest in the future

For us the "Walled Garden" was a sensational piece of modern design created by leading Dutch garden designer Piet Oudolf in 1999 and is now beautifully mature. The walled garden is divided into twelve areas each with a different theme. All an inspiration for any gardener. A big plus is a nursery where you can purchase many of the same plants that are growing in the gardens, and receive expert advice. Cafe was good too with excellent cakes, loved the Bakewell tart due to Covid-19 there is only outside seating

In addition there is the Parkland laid out by by "Capability" Brown in 1771. We walked around the guided trail through the parkland and enjoyed the stunning views. There is also Scampston Hall to visit but it was not open the day we visited due to Covid-19. To do everything you would need a whole day but our purpose was the gardens.
