About
Seaton Tramway operates narrow gauge heritage trams between Seaton, Colyford and Colyton in East Devon's glorious Axe Valley, travelling alongside the River Axe estuary through two nature reserves and giving an unrivalled view of the abundant wading bird life. The coastal resort of Seaton is now a gateway town to the Jurassic Coast, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, whilst the historic town of Colyton is described as "Devon's Most Rebellious Town" for its part in the Monmouth Rebellion of 1685.The company originated at the Lancaster Electrical Company of Barnet, which manufactured battery electric vehicles. In 1949 its owner, Claude Lane, indulged his hobby by building a miniature 15” gauge tram, which he ran at garden fetes. This portable system enjoyed temporary homes at St Leonard’s and Rhyl before evolving onto the 2’ gauge Eastbourne Tramway. Many of the present trams were built at Eastbourne, but by the mid 1960’s the tramway’s success was outgrowing the mile line. Claude therefore began to look for alternative locations. In late 1969, Claude purchased the Seaton to Colyton section after the branchline had been closed by Dr Beeching in 1966 and, after a mammoth relocation from Eastbourne, the first section was opened in 1980. Since then the tramway has developed into one of Devon’s best loved attractions.New trams have been added to the fleet and the buildings have been much improved in order to meet the needs of the thousands of enthusiastic people who visit each year.

Great day out marred by awkward banter
Great trams, scenery and staff. Visit marred though by some basically misogynistic banter heard more than once and in earshot of children. Would be good to see more diversity in all roles on line. Attraction seems very progressive in other areas (E.g. quiet trains and dementia-friendly events) so hopefully this will be recognised and addressed. All in all though we had a nice day out.

A pleasant way to spend a couple of hours, a touch expensive & lacking in things to do
I've visited nearby Sidmouth and the surrounding area a fair bit but found a leaflet about the old trams and thought I'd pay a visit with friends. We parked in the spaces next to the modern station (£6 for 3.5 hours). Highly pricey for a sadly run down town, but perfectly sited for the station. Next door is an old attraction that is sadly abandoned, I'd love to see the tramway take the building on and turn it into a full museum. I prebooked without any drama and was checked in at the main station where you just wait for the next tram to arrive (these are regular). the weather held for us so we sat upstairs. The stairs to the top are unbelievably narrow so do take care. I'm a very slight man, but even I found them tight. The tram then trundles away and once you are past the unsightly new housing, there are pleasant views of the open countryside. There are a couple of stops along the way that you can alight at, but I'm a little unsure why you'd want to do this as there isn't much to do at most of these points. One stop does allow you to walk to some wildlife hides so this may be fun for those interested here. The final stop in Colyton is a lovely little station with the classic gift shop and a cade selling a solid range of food, drink and cream teas. There isn't much else though I'm afraid. The return journey is another nice trip (both ways are around 25 minutes) taking in the same open space as before. There is quite a nice moment when the tram crosses the main road and drivers were all taking photos and waving which was fun. There was an uncomfortable moment when we were at one stop and the driver had an exchange with another making some crude joke sexist about "bird" watching. Perhaps a little staff training here would be positive. We did see a fox, rabbits and a heron on our journey which was nice. At just over £11 a ticket though this is a little steep for a trip on the tram thereandbackagain and with nothing much to do at either end of the 'line' I would suggest setting this activity up with another visit in the local area, or indeed the beach. Overall this is a nice way to spend a couple of hours, but I feel it could be so much more. As mentioned I'd love to see the abandoned adjacent building turned into a full tram museum but ultimately this is a good thing to do if in the area.
Thank you for visiting and taking the time to review Seaton Tramway. Unfortunately the car parks belong to East Devon District Council so we do not have control over costs. We really appreciate your feedback and will review the other point. We hope you will visit us again soon!

    Disappointed
We drove on the pink tram today and found the driver very rude and condescending. Little digs to people not getting in their seat quick enough. Enjoyed seeing the wildlife but he kind of put a damper on the day, very expensive too and £4 for a tiny sausage dog who sat on my knee.
Thank you for your review of Seaton Tramway, we appreciate all feedback. I am very sorry to hear that your experience of our customer service was not up to standard, please could you get in touch with us directly on 01297 20375 so we are able to gather more information.

We have just been on The Polar Express in Seaton, absolutely wonderful experience from start to finish. The crew could not do enough to help us with my son’s wheelchair and it was just magical! Worth every penny, we loved the conductor with the moustache and chef sprout too!

Polar Express you didn't disappoint us. Our 2 young granddaughters had an amazing time. Truly magical. The elves and Santa's other helpers made it a day to remember. They talked about it all the way home
We cant wait to come back next year. Thank you

We took our young children on the Polar Express experience and 1 of our children has ADHD but the staff more than accommodate him and his evening so magical that his memories will last a life time.

The Polar Express - we LOVED this trip! Really atmospheric in the station, all the staff were brilliant and in character throughout. Having a performance before we got on the tram was wonderful.
It was a really lovely day and we felt we got real value for money.
I would recommend this trip above the other Polar Express trips we have been on. Thank you!

I visited this year with my son, 9 and daughter, 4. It was amazing! All the team were fantastic and truly committed to their roles. The entrance of the trams at the start always gets gasps of amazement. Big shout out to chef petit pois, elf cocoa and elf mistletoe, the hobo ghost and the conductors. A big mention to Smokey & Steamer, hilarious with the best accents and they kept my 9 year old engaged in the fun. Everyone was brilliant and made this a truly magical trip out.

Absolutely amazing time with our girls (12 and 5) on the Polar Express on Seaton Tramway.
Whole team were fantastic and was so professionally done. The singers and dancers at the start set the tone, smokey&steamer, hobo, conductor, elves and all the cooks all played their part so well.
Truly awesome memories made x

We did the Christmas Polar Express with the family (kids 5 & 7) and it was absolutely magical. The kids came home from their trip to the North Pole filled with excitement and wonder. The whole experience was amazing for us all. The kids also felt like they were chosen to receive the first gift of Christmas from Santa - how magical! The only issue is none of the bells work (if you know you know!!)

Truly the best evening. We smiled from start to finish. Everyone was amazing but memorable characters were chef sugar, chef beans and the conductor (with the moustache!! 🤣)

We live 1.5 hours away and the experience was everything we hoped for and more. Definitely recommend to everyone. Thankyou all!
