Seaton Tramway operates narrow gauge heritage trams between Seaton, Colyford and Colyton in East Devon's glorious Axe Valley, travelling alongside the River Axe estuary through two nature reserves and giving an unrivalled view of the abundant wading bird life. The coastal resort of Seaton is now a gateway town to the Jurassic Coast, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, whilst the historic town of Colyton is described as "Devon's Most Rebellious Town" for its part in the Monmouth Rebellion of 1685.The company originated at the Lancaster Electrical Company of Barnet, which manufactured battery electric vehicles. In 1949 its owner, Claude Lane, indulged his hobby by building a miniature 15” gauge tram, which he ran at garden fetes. This portable system enjoyed temporary homes at St Leonard’s and Rhyl before evolving onto the 2’ gauge Eastbourne Tramway. Many of the present trams were built at Eastbourne, but by the mid 1960’s the tramway’s success was outgrowing the mile line. Claude therefore began to look for alternative locations. In late 1969, Claude purchased the Seaton to Colyton section after the branchline had been closed by Dr Beeching in 1966 and, after a mammoth relocation from Eastbourne, the first section was opened in 1980. Since then the tramway has developed into one of Devon’s best loved attractions.New trams have been added to the fleet and the buildings have been much improved in order to meet the needs of the thousands of enthusiastic people who visit each year.

Ambles along and you get a good view of the local countryside. Stops at Colyton which is a medieval small devon town. Lots of niche shops at the end of the line. In the heart of Seaton next to the Jurassic centre.

Dispite the heavy rain, we had a lovely day on the Halloween tram. My 7 year old loved it. Lovely little gift shop, stopped half way meant to be for cream tea but I had wine. Staff all friendly, helpful and knowledgable Thoroughly recommend

First of all you don't need to like trams to visit here. There is a nice cafe and shop at one end of the line. You can have a tram ride of around four miles to Seaton, spectacular wildlife to see and nice scenery on three quarter sized trams, they are quite small and reminded me of toy town nevertheless... Enjoyable afternoon on Seaton Tramway. Nice leisurely tram trip all the way along the estuary, with lovely scenery. 25 minutes each way & we stopped at their station for a Deven cream tea. Just jike stepping back in time. Congratulations to all staff, seem very happy in their work.

Very unexpected visit, after a trip to Seaton Jurassic. But made very welcome when asking for information at kiosk. So pleased we did this. Son loved it. Thank you to everyone who we met, even in the cafe and shop, all very friendly. We will be returning, maybe on a slightly warmer day!

We visited Seaton tramway on a short break. The start point in Seaton head a couple of trams waiting. One was decorated for Halloween with crew in fancy dress. We caught tram number 8 and rode on the top deck. The route goes along the river Axe and the wetland bird sanctuary. We got off at Colyton and enjoyed a... More

I visited Seaton tramway with my two children (aged 2 and 4 at the time), and I couldn't believe how much we all enjoyed it. The concept is very simple; small electric trams ply up and down a route between Seaton and the small town of Colyton, approximately three miles each way. The trams are actually half scale replicas of... More

This was a lovely excursion on a form of transport which we had never tried before. Travelled for about 3 miles through stunning landscape of bird reserves in Axe Valley. Saw a variety of different bird species. Tram ride itself was lovely and we got off at Colyton village which was well worth the visit. Staff volunteers who run the... More

A nice tram ride ,the staff are informative encounter re the tram cars and the area. You can have a cuppa at the far end and come back on a later tram. There was also a unit there selling a good selection of goods for sale if you like collecting old memorabilia.
