Seaton Tramway operates narrow gauge heritage trams between Seaton, Colyford and Colyton in East Devon's glorious Axe Valley, travelling alongside the River Axe estuary through two nature reserves and giving an unrivalled view of the abundant wading bird life. The coastal resort of Seaton is now a gateway town to the Jurassic Coast, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, whilst the historic town of Colyton is described as "Devon's Most Rebellious Town" for its part in the Monmouth Rebellion of 1685.The company originated at the Lancaster Electrical Company of Barnet, which manufactured battery electric vehicles. In 1949 its owner, Claude Lane, indulged his hobby by building a miniature 15” gauge tram, which he ran at garden fetes. This portable system enjoyed temporary homes at St Leonard’s and Rhyl before evolving onto the 2’ gauge Eastbourne Tramway. Many of the present trams were built at Eastbourne, but by the mid 1960’s the tramway’s success was outgrowing the mile line. Claude therefore began to look for alternative locations. In late 1969, Claude purchased the Seaton to Colyton section after the branchline had been closed by Dr Beeching in 1966 and, after a mammoth relocation from Eastbourne, the first section was opened in 1980. Since then the tramway has developed into one of Devon’s best loved attractions.New trams have been added to the fleet and the buildings have been much improved in order to meet the needs of the thousands of enthusiastic people who visit each year.

Visited during half term, thankfully blessed with a nice day so was able to travel on the open top deck of the tram. It was lovely to try and spot the birds and animals that were in the guide, when we got off at the end of the line there was a play area for the children and a shop... More

We've holidayed here for many years before our children arrived and since and the tram is always such fun - the staff are superb and work hard to make everything enjoyable. The stations are spotless and we recommend the holiday specials, Polar Express, Halloween, Easter - even without children it's lovely. Keep up the great work !

My husband and I spent Valentine's afternoon in the rain travelling on the tram from Seaton, we got off at both stops, had a lovely drink at the pit stop station - Colyford - gorgeous roaring fire and friendly staff and locals. We then carried on to Colyton - the cafe at the station is of exceptionally high standard, and... More

We booked the Seaton Tramway as a surprise for my Dad's 80th birthday - the whole experience was fantastic! 26 of the family enjoyed the tram ride from Seaton to Colyton, where we enjoyed morning coffee and cake, then Dad had the Drivers Eye experience and drove a tram (under instruction) back to Seaton, followed by all his guests on... As a family we have been here every year for the past 10 years and never get tired of it. The trip from Seaton to Colyton takes about 30 minutes and goes along the Axe Estuary. If you are into bird watching this is a brilliant way to see the many wetland birds in situ. The tramdrivers and indeed all... More

On arrival we were shown to the waiting area which was decorated like a living room with the Polar Express showing on the tv. A singing chef made a dramatic entrance to the room and ushered us to the platform to wait for the Polar Express. The conductor was AMAZING and engage with everybody who was waiting- particularly with those... More
