The pier is great and where you go to ride the wheel. There is a large tent area that has several gum ball style machines that spit out fish/duck food so bring quarters. This area kept my kids busy for a long while :)
The views are amazing from the Ferris wheel, especially at night... It has many options for dining and offers many shops, and art sculptures to pose with... a walk through memory lane.
Definitely a great place for a few days.

Sorry, I don't know the area well. I flew into Ronald Reagan and took a cab ($30) to the hotel in National Harbor. National Harbor itself is quite walkable. I understood there was transportation to some of the further attractions but I did not use it.
