It was a very man made tourist area, more than I expected. I hadn't found anywhere else we could get our muddy fun pictures so thought it was a good option. It was pretty pricey and there isn't much to do except soak in the pools, and the mud one is limited to 20minutes. It was some of the best... More

Went in with the family not exactly knowing what was in store - but definitely worth the effort and time! it was a very relaxing spa. Yes the actual spa and mud bath are not natural - and i this was what i was hesitant about - i would not have entered it if it were. You can see them... More

Its was a lot more man made than I had expected. The mud pools were a bit of fun once you moved passed the point that they were a muddy pool. The hot water showers between the mud and sulphur were lovely, especially because we were there late in the day and it was cold. The sulphur pools were nice... More

Although a tad on the expensive side ($35 each just to wander around), it was worth a visit. Lots of different volcanic features, well laid out with lots of informative signs dotted around the place. Tracks were well maintained and easy walking. Some of the tracks had steam coming out of them - don't be tempted to test the temperature... More

We did the entire thing, geothermal walk, mud bath, spa and best of all massage. What a fantastic way to spend Sunday afternoon. By the time we got into the car to drive back we were feeling like a million dollars. Great place and if you come to Rotorua it must be visited. Beautiful and friendly staff, delightful blueberry muffin... More

We came from Perth, Australia especially to see the mud bath and spas at Hells Gate, after being inspired by Ngaio Marsh's old book "Colour Scheme" (an Inspector Alleyn mystery). Strangely (for us), we booked the most expensive package ($240 each) in advance without reading every single review. This was to be a dream come true! The mud bath came... More

So relaxing and a unique experience. The walk was also nice as well to do before hand. A must-do for sure.

We did the $75 pack for 20mins in the mud bath followed by time in the spas. It was explained there is a time limit for the mud spa due to safety. Leaves you feeling refreshed, relaxed and your skin feeling awesome - smell is hard to get out of your hair and clothes though. Staff were friendly, warm, knowledgable... More

We went as a family for a mud bath and sulphur spa, the mud bath was less like mud and more like dirty water, it looked completely different than what was shown in the photos. The sulphur spa was relatively nice and was quite warm. Probably not worth the $75 for an adult for only 20 minutes in the mud... More

We first visited Hells Gate 11 years ago but never did the mud and sulphur spa then. I find it all so fascinating and loved walking around the site and at the bubbling and steaming pools. So after we had a walk around the site taking in the smells and lovely bubbling sounds coming from the bowels of the Earth... More
