We arrived early and got in before the crowds (highly recommend going firsr thing) which made our trip so enjoyable. There was only one or two other people so it made us feel like we had the place to ourselves. The staff were ao lovely...More

Loved it! I'm a bloke and this was a highlight of my New Zealand trip. The mud pools are so unique and you just have so much fun rubbing mud all over your face and body. 20 minutes is plenty of time in the mud...More

Nice experience on mud bath and mineral pool bath. Allowed only 20 mins on mud pool though (no sure if that is due to health reasons or they want to free up the space for other customers), can stay in sulphur pool as much as...More

We went here as a birthday treat and I wanted to immerse myself in some mud. We had a guided tour and he was fantastic! Very knowledgeable and just in general a great guy. We also had the opportunity to do.some of our own carving...More

Be warned this place is a classic tourist trap! We struggled to justify the $75 per person for 20 minutes in mud pool, then a dip in the sulphur pool. Our movements were closely monitored i.e. was questioned about where I was going when heading...More

A great walk around many thermal pools/lakes of various sizes and activity. The landscape was quite impressive.

We enjoyed this very much, first a walk through the thermal park, then lots of fun in the mud bath followed by a luxurious soak in the sulphur pool. Only downside are the very basic changing facilities, only a couple of soaking wet benches in...More

Yep, apparently Peppa would be very happy because of the muddy puddles, even tho she would be cooked because these mud pools are a bit warmish. Great walk, relaxing and fun mud and sulphur bath. We still stink :) must do!

Fantastic experience. Would definitely recommend changing into swimwear prior to arriving at the mud baths, as change rooms have no doors & are open, very cold in winter months. Arrived first thing in the morning after the hot springs and mud baths had just been...More

Hi TA mates, I'm looking to book a geothermal walk, mud bath and sulphur spa combo at Hell's Gate. I understand you can do the walk self-guided or with a guide (runs twice a day?). Can anyone advise which option might be best? And does the guided walk cost more/available in the combo package? I'm thinking the guided option might be very crowded and impersonal in November so may be best to take the self-guided option to avoid large crowds? The visit would be in November. Any advice or feedback would be greatly appreciated. Also we will be driving down from Pokeno (south of Auckland) that day so thinking it best to detour around Lake Rotorua to Hell's Gate before entering Rotorua for the night (with a motorhome). Would that be the most practical (assuming road north around Lake Rotorua is suitable for motorhomes?). Please forgive me if these are stupid questions - I've not visited Rotorua before:) CHeers, LIsa.

Hi, we were there in November of 2015 and it wasn't crowded. The guided tour had approximately 10 people on it. The mud pool had 2 others who got out a few minutes after we got in and the sulfur pool had one other family in... More
