On the corner of via Massimo D'Azeglio at Castel Gandolfo stands a red bench. Well, it is not so much a corner as it is a bend in the road. The bench is simple, comfortable, and dedicated to the protection of women from violence. Across the street is a small shop with a "Forno a legna" sign. I never really understood why it is spelled like that. To me it always sounds like "lenja" when pronounced. I have had it explained to me a few times now, and I still don't get the spelling. To be honest, I do think I understand it, but I feign ignorance, so that I can have the explanation repeated again. I cannot bear the thought of not hearing it again. Yes, I admit, this is a strange way to start a review of a bench, but all things considered travel and life in Italy, as well as other places, is a very personal experience, and I will insist that it shouldn't be forced in to categories and sterilized by statistics and sociological scrutiny. So, returning to the bench. It sits some 50 meters downhill and west of the vaulted entrance to the piazza in front of the papal palace at Castel Gandolfo (as they say "I imagine that place would have some stories to tell, if only the walls could speak"). As such it is neatly placed somewhere in the limbo between the sacred and the profane. It brings to mind the song "Satan and St. Paul" by the singer-songwriter John Fullbright - ahh yes, one of those singer-songwriters. And indeed, though the lyrics are catchy, the judgment is way too harsh. After all this is just a comfortable bench that provides respite while going up or down the steep inclination or around Castel Gandolfo. If you stop for a while and watch, some of Italy will pass by. A young couple, a man with a small dog, a Smart car, casually strolling neatly dressed men, families with children and so forth. Their pace is mostly relaxed, laid back, and oozes of contentment, perhaps after a decent meal. Goddammit, move along and let me have this place to myself. But no, they are part of the place, and I am the interloper - entirely out of place, but far beyond perfectly situated. Therefore, steal a little moment in time and savor just sitting on this bench for a while, or for as long as absolutely possible. Imagine provoking a light sensor to turn on the light to catch a glimpse of something interesting in the dark. At first, inquisitive, again, intrigued by what I see, again, it is becoming addictive, again, I have to see, again, what happens if I stop provoking the light to turn on, again, will I go blind forever, again, again, again… But back to the bench. Will it offer respite, a new perspective, enjoyment? On all accounts I highly recommend this bench, perhaps while listening to The Avett Brothers "I Wish I Was".

Spent the day here swimming sun bathing and chilling out amazing place , you have a family beach with boats and water sports and another quieter beach further round , the lake is shallow up to about 50 metres out then deepens perfect for toddlers paddling, when in the area we'll worth a visit 😀
