About
Located in the area facing the Pacific Ocean in the city of Hitachinaka, Hitachi Seaside Park offers beautiful flowers in its well-kept, large gardens throughout the year. In spring, narcissuses, tulips and nemophila (baby blue eyes) attract lots of visitors. In early summer, poppies and roses, and in summer, zinnias and sunflowers, bloom. In autumn, you can enjoy kochia (summer cypress) and cosmos flowers. In winter, ice tulips can be seen, making for a rich complement of flora throughout the year. The Pleasure Garden, which features over 25 rides and attractions, includes a Ferris Wheel sitting 100m above sea level and offering outstanding views. Other destinations that allow you to enjoy nature include the Rinkan Athletic Grounds, Barbecue Zone, and Cycling Course.

I visited Hitachi Seaside Park in autumn to see the kochia. I joined a bus tour from Tokyo Station for the round trip. The park was beautiful, with colorful kochia and cosmos flowers. I also learned for the first time that kochia produces the seeds used for tonburi. In addition to the stunning scenery, I enjoyed a brass band performance and the athletic facilities. It’s a great place for families with children to spend the whole day. However, if you take a weekend tour, be aware that the return trip to Tokyo Station may face traffic jams.

The annual Nemophila Hill at Hitachi Seaside Park
It's beautiful, covered with nemophila flowers.
A pale blue spreads all over, and the faint scent of nemophila flowers tickles your nose pleasantly.
It seems to be the most crowded so far.
But considering that, there are fewer foreigners than usual.
It's very strange 🧐

I went there during the kochia autumn foliage season. It was crowded even though it was a weekday. I think it's easier to get into the parking lot on the south side during the kochia season. However, you will have to walk a little. If you check the flower information on the website before you go, you can go at the best time.

Fairly easy to get to from Tokyo on public transportation. You'll need to take a bus from Katsuta Station--way too far to walk. The park covers a very large amount of land. Your enjoyment will probably depend on what and how much is in bloom when you visit. I suggest combining it with a visit to Kairakuen.

The Monafila fields are amazing. It's definitely worth seeing.
It's a little far, but I checked the traffic information and found that it eases up in the afternoon, so I went there before closing time. It was Golden Week, so I got there in a bit of a traffic jam. There was a traffic jam on the way back, so I took a detour.

I agree with the other review. I went in late march and was really disappointed. The only things in bloom were a couple early tulips and daffodils.
However the park itself is huge and lovely. I was able to salvage my time by renting a bike and just enjoying the bike ride around the park. I would rate this 5 stars if I had been able to visit when more flowers were in bloom- I just wish their English brochure and website were more accurate as to when flowers will be in season.

I had come here expecting to see flowers but the only thing worth seeing were the kochias what were still half green.
It took a lot of effort to come here. There was supposed to be a shuttle bus from Ajigaura station to the park but the guy at the railway told me that the bus wasn't running today and directed me to take another bus. This other bus was packed full with people with luggages. It was an uncomfortable sardine-packed ride to the park.
The park entry fee was not expensive, only 410 yen. It was very big and had bicycles for rent for people to get around, but I decided to explore on foot. I found the kochia field but it was still half green. Other than that there are normal green trees, nothing much to see and no other flowers. Ate lunch at the open air collection of eateries and walked through some playground where a lot of Japanese schoolchildren were playing. There was also an amusement park with a ferris wheel and rides.
I had allocated the whole afternoon (about 4 hours) to spend at this park but I was done in less than two hours.
I think it is probably important to check the season of the flowers otherwise there is nothing to see. Just a big park and nothing like the pictures on their website. :(
How to get here:
1. Take the JR train from Mito to Katsuta (one stop)
2. Transfer to the Hitachinaka Seaside Railway, Katsuta to Ajigaura stop
3. Take the bus from Ajigaura to Kaihin Koen Nishiguchi (Seaside Park West Gate),
OR if for some reason the bus is not running (I don't know why but I encountered it)
2. Take the bus from Katsuta direct to Hitachi Seaside Park East Gate (400 yen)
If you manage to go via the Hitachinaka Seaside Railway, there is a special ticket that gives you an unlimited one day pass on the seaside railway and includes the entry fee into the seaside park for 1100 yen. Do drop by Nakaminato station to visit the fish market if you get that. It is worth visiting.

Kochias are green colored but they turn red every THIRD WEEK OF OCTOBER. The side of Miharashi no Oka hill during pre-fall season is the best place to visit.
Two hours away from Tokyo but there is a Limited Express train that is not too crowded that can bring you there.
Ride Limited Express from UENO or TOKYO STATION and alight at KATSUTA STATION in Ibaraki Prefecture.
From Katsuta, you have the option to either ride the 400 Yen bus which has a very insensitive driver (because he did not seem to help us at all when we rode the bus) or to ride the taxi directly to Hitachi Seaside Park.
If you are a group of four or five, ride the taxi since it is more convenient and if you add up the 400 Yen each that you will use to ride the bus, then it is almost the same fare for the taxi plus there is not much walking needed if you opt to take the taxi.
If you choose to ride the bus from Katsuta Station going to Hitachi Seaside, pay the bus if you are getting off or you can buy ticket via a vending machine. 400 Yen.
Make sure to eat the soy sauce ice cream hahaha or try the hot tea in the restaurant near Miharashi no Oka area.
Prices of the tickets are available below.

The pictures of the park were great. But if you plan to go there during end of March or early April, you may want to reconsider because only the Suisen Garden and the Kinen No Mori footpath have blooming flowers despite the very huge size of the park during this timing. Yes, they are beautiful and still a sight to see, but considering the 2hrs travel from Tokyo, you're better off going to Disney Resort as they also have lots of beautiful flowers (pink tulips, etc).

Hi, will the park open on the 15th of Oct? Are there any day tours for to hitachi on that day? Because I searched for a few and can't find any. Thanks in advance.

Any flowers on Dec ? Is that worth to go on Dec ? Thanks
Written 25 September 2019
Helo there. There’s a flower season schedule on their official website. In december, there are few kinds of flowers. The main event in december will be the illumination show. It’s open from the end of oct to the beginning of february. It has received the best illumination show in japan for 3 straight years, so, yes, really worth it even in december. Hope this helps🙏🏻

I plan to go on 27 July. What flower can I view at that time?
Written 22 June 2019
Unfortunately for Hitachi Seaside Park won't have much flowers at the time when you arrive, but if you still have time, probably around mid August, there is Sun flower, Zinnia and Kochia green. This unique Kochia bush will turn yellow and red around September to October. Try Google flowers in Japan, you may find some park with certain flowers blooming in July.

I will be in Tokyo from 15.05, and would make a day trip to Hitachi Seaside Park on 19.05. Will it be worth? Will I see what I would like to see? :)
