I like visiting cemeteries in countries I go to and I have seen many so far. But this cemetery dating back to 12th century is really unique, I have never seen something like that before. I had read about it before and seen its pictures but visiting it and seeing it with my own eyes was a totally different experience.... More

Ba chance I saw a photo of this cemetar and I decided to go there. It is something special I have never seen anything like that. More than 6,000, mahogany colored, beautifully engraved Seljukian tomb of various age, size and type covers an area of approximately 200 acres. It's by the roadside, very easy to find, just take the minibus from Tatvan or Bitlis. The ancient cemetery of Ahlat in Eastern Turkey near lake Van is a must-see if you are in the area. There were no tour buses at the time of visit in April 2014 and we had the place completely to ourselves. A new museum is being built there.
