About
This is a 15-hectare area on the edge of Puyo that was reforested with the most important trees for medicine and other uses by the indigenous people. Come to learn about these plants, these cultures, to improve your health with these, to reduce your impact on the environment, to buy handicrafts made by the indigenous people, or just breathe fresh air and have contact with nature. This is a safe thing to do during the Coronavirus Pandemic, since we are outside with lots of air flow. The guides may take off their masks to visitors can hear them, but we ask the visitors to keep their face masks or shields on, plus we try to keep at least 2 meters between people who do not live together. In addition, we have natural medicine for many things, including Coronavirus.

Took us a while to find this but very interesting when you get there. Chris explains about how the place was developed and has a great knowledge of all the plants and their uses. Be prepared to be there a while.

We were given a tour by the American biologist owner. He and his indiginous wife planted the park which looks just like natural jungle. He talked about the uses the indigenous people's make of plants especially for natural medicine. Also act how we can all be more sustainable. He has numerous interesting ideas on the subject. We then went round the jungle area and were shown different plant species and their uses. All in all a fascinating trip which lasted about three hours

I am glad you had a good time. (One little thing: I am coordinator and our foundation is the owner.)

This is an unmissable place in Puyo, the owners are a very intereating couple from San Francisco and Shuar Community.
She is like a dictionary talking and showing medicinal plants.
The place is like a natural laboratory with hundreds or maybe thousand etnomedicinal trees.
It's super easy to find owners cos is near the center of Puyo.
If you are in Puyo, this is a place where you HAVE to go! :)

Omaere is one of those rare, unexpected jewels that makes a trip. This is a way to experience the jungle when you're unable to go deep to the interior. The owners have a great depth of knowledge and are gifted teachers. If you're interested in Indigenous cultures, ecology, ethnobotany, or just want the magical experience of walking in the jungle, Omaere is a must. Chris Canaday speaks fluent English; he and his family have built something truly extraordinary in Omaere and are to be commended. I've been numerous times and will always go back every time I'm in Puyo. Makatai yatsuro!

We did an interesting tour at Omaere. It's a pretty small, private reserve with friendly, sympathetic (though some a bit theatrical) staff. When you do a tour (in Spanish, but there was someone available to translate the few things we missed to English), you let them know how much time you have and they'll adjust the length accordingly. Tours are often led by ppl who are still part of/ living in a traditional (infiginous) community in the jungle, so they're very knowledgable. We learned a lot about plants and also about ecotoilets :p There's a cute little gift shop (bit expensive) too.

Indigenous dwellings and local plants highlight this park. You can even buy cures for various ailments concocted from the plants.

I was met by the American botanist Chris who has been building the gardens with his wife over the last 27 years or so. As it was a quiet afternoon I got a personal tour for $5 which lasted over 3 hours. I learned about the lifestyles of the Waorani and Shvar indigenous people and also got a comprehensive tour of the gardens with explanations of most of the plants and their medicinal properties, truly amazing. At the end you get to purchase pottery and handicrafts and some basic skin care products, you can get personalised medicines but these normal you need to book in for. Overall it was an excellent tour and covered a lot in an afternoon, it gives you a very good flavour of the indigenous lifestyle in a short period, if you are short on time. Would definitely recommend a visit.
It is a bit difficult to find as it is a few hundred yards into the park on the right hand side as you go round a corner, you can actually walk past it as it is a little hidden.

I am glad you enjoyed the visit. We now have a big metal sign in front of our entrance ... plus we are right before the only suspension bridge on the Paseo Turístico. Happy trails.
