Pichawaram worth visiting Mangrove forest but dont fall into trap of local food served there by women around there.
Take a row boat for better experience of the place. They are for Rs 400 for 4 people for 1hr. The boatman will ask if you want to go extra and will charge extra 300 for it. Go coz the scenery is best in those parts. Now after you come out your taxi driver will take you to eat local seafood. But don’t don’t go to eat there. They are cheaters. In the name of fish curry they will give a inch of fish tail and prawn curry is one small button in some plates and none in some. Had very bad experience. One thin sliched piece of king fish fry was for Rs 190 🤣 even exotic seafood restaurants won’t charge that much. Also the driver put his lunch in our bill. So don’t don’t don’t eat there. Move out and eat outside anywhere.

    Must visit - Beautiful experience
Would highly recommend . Simply beautiful and mesmerising experience . We were in twominds whether to make the effort of 2 hours car ride from Pondicherry; I would say it’s totally worth it. Here are some tips : 1. Definitely go for row boat option and NOT the motor boat option. The row boat explores deeper parts ; there is no noise of motor ; you will be able to hear the silence and chirping of birds if on row boat . 2. The rowing people are making lots of effort . They will offer to take you into deeper parts of the mangroves . Should definitely go for that offer . It will add 20 mins to your ride ; getting to unbelievable sections of mangroves . We paid 500 bucks for that additional experience and felt it was worth it ; especially the time spent to reach there . 3. Get there early . It will let you get you first set of boats and you can enjoy the boat ride without the harsh sun . We got there by 8:40 am and there was already a small queue . They start selling tickets by around 8:50 am . We got the first set of boats and were back by 10 am and sun was not harsh till then .

Lush green mangrove forests with lots of canopies
Today, I traveled to the mangrove forest popularly known as Pichawaram Forest. I traveled from Pondicherry and there are two ways to travel to the forest: First - By taking public bus from New Bus Stand to Chidambram Forest (Rs 100 per person) and then booking auto from Chidambaram bus stand to the forest. (Rs 800 both side including waiting charge) Second - By renting a cab (Rs 3000 around trip) We hired a row boat which is actually recommended since it will go to inner areas and deep forest where motor boats can’t go. The boat charges is Rs 450 per boat. However, rower will ask for extra Rs 500 for going to deep forest which is actually the main part of the boating. It’s actually a scenic ride with lush green forest, mesmerising trees, large canopies, water animals and lots of fun. The best part of the trip is the deep forest ride which the rower will go only after taking Rs 500 extra charge and its totally worth it. I will recommend to go for it!!!!

    Pichavaran mangroves
Very serene . 2nd largest mangroves next to Sundarbans in india. 15kms from Chidambaram. Timngs 9am to 4p. Go early to avoid Queues. Basic toilet facilities.TTDC has boating rowboat, motor boat options. Take the row boat as estuaries are narrow and these can manoeuvre not motor boats. Row boats take you deeper into the mangroves too for an extra charge. Water depth is 2 metres . Popular location for south indian film shooting. There are restaurants with veg ,sea food options.prawn and shell fishing done here.

Serene and one of a kind experience
Considering its uniqueness and vastness- this cant be missed if you are nearby like Pondicherry. Govt boat rates are reasonable. Its pure magical to navigate through the narrow mangrove forest with their roots above your head.

    Boating at Pichavaram
Beautiful place even though offbeat. You will be pleasantly surprised once you reach there. Boating available from 9.00am to 5.00pm daily. Row boats & motor boats both available. However motor boats need more number of people. A very enjoyable experience. Also on the way back there are many locals offering sea food at small restaurants. Most have converted the front portion of their homes to restaurants. A very good spread of sea food available at very reasonable prices. Definitely not to be missed

Must visit place near pondicherry and Chidambaram
Today 29th July we visited the Pichavaram Mangrove forest around 1 pm. It's such a peaceful and quiet place. We took a motor boat for 5 members. The boat man did not understand Hindi or english. This was the main problem, at the ticket booking counter I think we should mention this. He was not able to click pics too. We enjoyed ourselves. He charged 500 extra saying I'll show you 4 more points. Overall it was a wonderful experience 😍

We went from Chennai to Chidambaram through ECR and it was a smooth ride till Pondicherry with amazing early morning sceneries. The Cuddalore is being a bit chaotic as the national highway is going through the center of the city..! Finally we reached Pichavaram around 10.30 after breakfast and temple visit. The 2 hour boat ride which will take you to interior canals are not available on weekends and hence we have chosen the 1 hour row boat option. The ride is enjoyable. It was our first time for mangrove forests and it's worth the visit. We have seen the mangroves closely and the boat rower told us about the natural canals,  development canals which was created by our government, the lives of the locals and the story of Pichavaram. The water level will be high in the evenings and low in the mornings. So he advised us to come during afternoon hours (3-5) to see the best of Pichavaram. You can enjoy the full view from the watch tower and there is a small museum about the flora and fauna found in mangroves. The place is having small park and a snack shop for refreshments. We had our lunch at the nearby Home/hotel (That is the only one hotel available in that area)  which is too good on sea foods according to my Non-vegetarian friends.  We started after lunch and reached Chennai in the evening.

Don't go there over during the long weekend kinda time. Charges are pretty high for the time they took you around.

Most of them ask for extra money which they will take you to the inner side of things. It is worth to go but it is also scary but the boaters are genuine and they are very decent.

The horrible part is once you enter the place someone comes and asks for money to enter and then forest department collects some money and on top of it, you have to purchase tickets. Don't go close to 2 or 3 PM during crowd time, you have to wait in a long queue and there is no guarantee that you get a ride. Any time they may put the hold and say we are done.

One hour's worth of time you could spend and if you have other attractions arranged then this is one of the things. But don't go for only this boat ride.

Toilets are horrible and not maintained properly.

A good place to visit to get a glimpse of nature. Negotiation with boatmen key despite paying 400 for ticket . Extra payment to boatmen will help in seeing additional places.

Overall the place has some good spots called caves where we saw all boatmen were taking people.

What has the potential to be a worthwhile experience was in fact underwhelming, boring and frustrating.

Having paid for our boat and then our foreigner fee, our boatman requested 500rupee more to go faster and further into the Mangroves, which of course he didn't do.

We saw a couple of birds fly for their lives from the noise of the 6 boats of school children who were also on the same route. That was it for wildlife!

This was a waste of money, time and effort. Such a shame because it has great potential.

On the way back from Tranquebar to Chennai, we stopped over for our much awaited first experience with mangroves.

Location: Google Maps is spot on and will take you to the Tourist Information Centre.
Tickets: Row Boats (prices vary from INR 400 per person) to Speed Boats (INR 1800 per boat, up to a max of 8 passengers, 2km, 40 minutes).

Facilities: There are some food stalls. Rest rooms are reasonably clean. Weekends are crowded.

Overall, the whole thing is slightly disorganized, but ultimately you get a boat number and a departure time.

You can see mangroves all along the water body, with roots hanging down into the waters. It is quite a beautiful area.

If you tip the boatman, he will take you deeper inside, where the mangroves become tunnels or caves. That is an experience. You will need to be careful and duck low to avoid being hit by the low hanging roots.

The overall ride was for about an hour and it was truly exciting to go through the mangroves. As a bird photographer, captured a Striated Heron (see photograph), but did not have the right settings for eagles in flight, just as we emerged from the dark tunnels! But such is life for a bird photographer.

Most underrated place ever and is a must visit. Best of all, we timed it brilliantly from weather and season perspective. This is must go during Nov/Dec timeframe otherwise be ready for getting roasted. I would definitely recommend row boat for the paddle and just pay the guy the extra amount. You will not be disappointed.

We visited this after visiting Chidambaram temple . Motor boat costs Rs.1800 whether one single person or 8 max . Manual boat cost Rs400. We bought motor boat ride payijg 1800 for two of us but a family of 5 offered to contribute and join us .BBot duration is 40 minutes but boatman asked extra 500 for taking ride to narrow lanes ,shooting spots; but everywhere same spot just mangrove trees and nice ride experience. Better to carry water bottle . Once again mismanaged tourism in terms of pricing, organising, parking etc - same old tendering for parking, ticketing queue . Good pleasure trip for anyone to chill out .

Had a nice pleasant boat ride in this mangrove forest. It is 1.5 to 2 hrs driving distance from Pondicherry.
There are 2 types of boats- Rowboats & Motor boats. Boats are not in the best condition, but not too bad either. Life jackets were provided. Proper ticket counter with fixed prices present. We went in row boat right thru the small waterlanes of the mangroves
Plz note-
1. Go for rowboats. Motorboats cannot enter the narrow water pathways thru the mangroves, they will only circle them. In rowboat, we actually had to duck a couple of times to avoid the branches of mangroves, we were so close!! Got some great clicks.
2. Motor boats have a roof, rowboats do not( probably since they enter into the narrow lanes of mangroves). So be sure to carry glares, caps, sun tan lotion etc.
Overall a nice trip, you can club it with a visit to Nataraj temple in Chidambaram, or a half day trip from Pondy
