Stunning well kept Castle with magnificent views
Sep 2021
Simply just walking round this stunning well kept castle ruin with such magnificent views made our day. It was like walking into the past and the guidebook really helped us understand about the castle so much more.
Absolutely well worth the visit and the £8 entrance fee and to top it all we met the lovely Jim at The Ship who, I believe, manages the castle. He was able to give us lots more information and answer some of our questions, poor man was only out for a meal with his wife!

What a view

What a stunning castle. Yes its lots of steps to get up the castle its self. But wow oh wow is it worth it. Amazing history and views. Not knevfir those with mobility problems. How ever it is possible to walk down the path to view the castle. With out having to negotiate the step steps.

Stunning views and an interesting site

The walk down the steps to the castle is not for the faint hearted or infirm.
Once there though the £8 entrance fee is well worth it for what is a very extensive site in a spectacular location.
We visited on a warm and sunny day and walked the well marked track from Stonehaven. I guess though it may well be a different experience in less clement weather.

Definitely worth a visit for the view.

Beautiful castle to visit. The inside is very interesting to walk around but the highlight is the view before you start walking down to it. It’s quite incredible and breathtaking. It’s a fair few steps down but you can take a break whenever you need.

Visited the Castle today. Great experience plus great views even with a bit of mist. Mark on the staff was a fund of knowledge on all the history. Highly recommended

Gorgeous Castle with a Rich History
Sep 2021
A gorgeous castle with a rich history in a stunning part of the countryside. A lot of hefty walking but if you are able to manage it is a must see in the area! I would definitely spend a few hours there so would suggest arriving late morning!

Beautiful setting

Didn't actually visit the inside of the castle as didn't realise, because of COVID, had to book in advance .. you can't just turn up and pay! We were just passing the castle on the way back to Montrose, hence the reason we stopped to take some photographs. However, it's in a beautiful setting and would be well worth a visit the inside the next time we're in that area.

A great example of Scottish heritage (..made famous by Microsoft too) There is a very nice walk along coastline to castle see their web site for details. Also beware there are a lot of steps down to entrance as well as in the castle

An absolute must-see!
Sep 2021
Oh my goodness, where do I even start? I LOVED my visit to Dunnottar Castle. I highly highly recommend visiting. I've been to three other castles since visiting this one, including Urquhart Castle on Loch Ness, and this is definitely my favorite. I took the train down from Aberdeen to Stonehaven and then walked the coastal trail (<1 hour) from the little seaside town to the castle on the cliffs. Even if you have a car, I recommend walking from town as the walk is a sight to see in itself. Beautiful views all along the cliffs with the ocean on one side and beautiful farmland on the other. And very cute cows along the way! Keep a keen eye on the water and you may see some dolphins and other cute creatures poking their heads out! Visiting the castle itself was really enjoyable too. While a lot of it is in ruins, there's still plenty to see and I thought the site did a brilliant job of providing information signs to give you a real sense of what daily life would've been like for the residents of the castle back in the day. And the views from the castle are gorgeous too. You can also walk down to the beach and walk along the cove looking up at the castle. There's a lot of steep stairs so keep that in mind when visiting! It's also very windy on the cliffs so be sure to bundle up. You can grab a hot drink and a snack up the path near the car park before or after your visit too. Definitely recommend visiting this site! It is well worth the visit.
