Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

I visited the Tolbooth Museum with my husband and children in April. It is situated right at the harbour in the town's oldest building and hides so many fascinating, hands on, exhibits of local and general interest. The guides were so welcoming and kindly interacted with my two lively children who both loved investigating the old jail cell and completing the quiz sheet. A fine experience for us all.

It looked like a boring little museum that doesn't charge for entrance. But inside it was a treasure trove of information and history. The custodian provided as much entertainment as information.

If you are in Stonehaven, GO HERE. I cannot recommend it too highly.

This museum, which is situated in the oldest building in Stonehaven, forms part of a very attractive harbour side. It is worth noting however that in winter the museum is only open at weekends.

Quirky collection of artefacts covering local life, shipping, the sea, life years ago etc etc. Really worth a visit, it’s actually a collection put together by a local man. Admission is free but you should leave a donation. Interesting place to while way an hour or so.

Wandered in here with limited expectations, and frankly, the collection of stuff is entirely random and incoherent. However they old guy running it was a gem, full of enthusiasm, and kind to the kids. It was free to get in and whilst you should only visit if in the area, it was a pleasant 20 minutes.

This museum is a lovely find and a must-do for anyone interested in the local area's history. In fact we learnt more here than at Dunnottar Castle. The building itself is at the heart of the picturesque harbour and the oldest building in the town I believe? Inside there are eclectic exhibitions on a range of subjects from local history through the ages, geology & geography and an extensive collection of objects from times gone by. Indeed, we were lucky to meet the 'magpie of mearn' who has collected many of the items himself over the years and who was keen to tell us more about the exhibits and even give us a demonstration of an early twentieth century massager! I imagine this is a great one to bring children to as the focus is looking at artefacts rather than pages of text. This is a little gem of a museum that is all the more impressive considering that it is volunteer run and free to enter though one is so impressed you are compelled to leave a donation!

As this was a long weekend called the Glasgow Fair we decided to go for a wee day out and ended up in Stonehaven! we parked the car (it's free on a sunday!) and had a leisurely stroll round this beautiful town ,went along the sea front as far as cowie where we visited the outdoor swimming pool which has been saved from closure by some dedicated people, and had lunch in the little cafe attached to the pool only sorry we didnt bring our swimming togs along!!we then visited the harbour where we found a quaint wee museum well worth popping in it's amazing, and brought back a few memories of how we used to live and actually could relate to some of the artifacts scary!!!we then watched the end of the golf in a little pub called the Hook&Eye refreshed after our long cool soft drinks we located the car and headed home a truly magical day out enjoyed by all ,hope to return soon and maybe stay over next time well worth a visit!!!
