Disappointed it was closed!
Feb 2020 • Family
I remember visiting the museum as a child and was looking forward to taking my own children to see it during our mid week stay in Stonehaven. Unfortunately, on arrival we found it to be closed. We noted that winter opening is at weekends only but you would have thought that with it being half term they would have had some midweek opening. We were not the only family to be disappointed as we saw another family trying the door as we walked past a second time.

Amazing and Interesting Tollbooth Museum
Dec 2019 • Friends
We stopped here on walk around the harbour. Plaque on Wall gives history of the Tolbooth going back hundreds of years. Started as store in 1600 for Dunnottar Castle.
When Stonehaven became County Town it was used as Sheriff Court and Prison.
Only opens Saturdays and Sundays from 12 to around 3
Well worth a visit in Stonehaven.

We were amased about the museum entry fee (no charge!). We got so much information from videos and display items on local tradition and history. It is worthwhile visiting and spending some time reading and looking around.

What a great collection! The owner, Mr. Jim Bruce, personally showed us some of the items in his collection. He was proud to share his history with us.

A passionate team of volunteers and a really magical experience.

This was one of the highlights of our visit to Stonehaven. Seldom have we experienced such a friendly, knowledgeable and enthusiastic team of volunteers. The museum is a gem, with a huge collection of fascinating memorabilia. To add interest for the children, they are given the challenge of finding monsters hidden throughout the museum from a sheet of drawings. Grandson Joe's winning prize, was a gold cup which took pride of place on our St Cyrus mantlepiece for the rest of our holiday! Free entry, but with a box, which was rightfully full of donations. This is a must if you are on this lovely Stonehaven harbour.
