This palace inside Fatehpur Sikri is named after the principal wife of the Emperor Akbar, and the building where the wifes of Akbar were housed. This building is the largest of all the palaces inside the complex. It’s roughly a large courtyard surrounded by the living quarters designed in a very distinctive style of Indo-Islamic architecture including the multi level pavilions. One of the more interesting structures in the complex.

THIS is one of the largest palaces in the abandoned Mughal town of Fatehpursikri.
It was commissioned by Mughal Emperor Akbar for his favourite wife, Mariam-uz-Zamani, commonly known as "Jodha bai".
The red sandstone structure is hailed as a masterpiece fusion of Hindu and Persian architecture.
When I toured it I was constantly distracted by intricately carved stonework and the impression that if I didn't pay strict attention I would miss some other wonder.
A must visit for anyone coming to Fatehpursikri.

This whole town is close to Agra and much nicer than the typical Agra area.
The fort is a very nicely carved areal with some beautiful buildings to stroll around.
There is a mandatory tourist car park with a lot of aggressive souvenirs stalls outside the complex. An efficient bus goes up the hill from here. If you have a driver it might be better to ask to be dropped at the mosque to avoid this tourist complex.

This beautiful palace which looks a bit like a pagoda was one of my highlights of Fatepur Sikri. Emperor Akhbar built this amazing fortress and you need quite a bit of time to take it all in in a leisurely fashion to do it justice.
Jodha Bai's Palace was built for one of his favourite empresses, this lad didn't do things by halves! It is quite magnificent and towers above anything else in the fortress.

Just as the Taj Mahal is a symbol of the love between Shah Jahan and his wife, so Jodha Bai's Palace is the symbol of the love between the Great Akbar and his Rajput Hindu wife Mariam-uz-Zamani. She gave him his first surviving son, who was later called Jahangir and succeeded him as the 4th Mughal Emperor.
It is the largest and most magnificent palace ; and it illustrates how the Muslim ruler respected his favourite wife, because it contains a Hindu temple and is filled with depictions of swans, elephants, Hindu motifs, even pictures of Lord Krishna (things that are definitively haram under Sharia Law).
In very good condition, I found this structure the highlight in Fatehpur Sikri.

The Jodha Bai’s palace shows Hindu influence and is built around a courtyard, with special care being taken to ensure privacy. Jodha Bai in Fatehpur Sikri is one of the most charming examples of the amalgamation of the apparently opposing architectural styles of the Rajputs and the Mughals. The palace, which is located on the eastern side of the entirety of the fort, was used, according to modern historians as a residence for the various queens of Akbar as well as the other members of the harem.
Corresponding to the style used in Hindu architecture, the main palace has a courtyard, around which the entirety of the palace is built. The living quarters are all built after keeping the courtyard as the center of the complex. Added to the brilliance of the red sandstone are the turquoise bricks, which are used on the roofs of the buildings.

Not sure if romance is the right word, but the story of Akbar and Johbhai lives in her place. The grounds were not overly extravagant, but truly special. I really enjoyed this visit.

It is well worth your time to visit Fatehpur Sikri as a side trip when visiting the Taj Mahal. Essential, it is a glorious ghost town. The structures are well-preserved and the history is incomparable. There is so much to see and learn, I would have definitely regretted not coming here. The architecture itself is worth the visit.

***When my travel companions and I stepped off the train in Agra Cantt, it was complete chaos - there were young men trying to steer us this way, then that way, to this taxi or that rickshaw. It made me feel very anxious but thankfully I found the Uttar Pradesh Tourism office inside of the station. They charge about $35 per person but you get a nice big bus, a personal tour guide and tickets to the Taj, Agra Fort and Fatehpur Sikri. It was a very comfortable and pleasant experience, and I recommend it to anyone who is visiting Agra but is not at all familiar with the place.
