We had booked a trip with our travel agent so this condor trip was included. We were so lucky to see a few condors here at the Cross, but in fact, the stop and walk before was even more spectacular as they were flying above our heads.
I only wish we could have stayed longer, but our guide pushed us to keep walking.
The views are beautiful a well.

We had a wonderful time with the condors. Yes it is quite busy, but there are lots of view points. The condors were amazing and do come remarkably close.
Not especially accessible for those less mobile, but otherwise an amazing experience.

We stopped here to see the condors when we were in the area. The views are amazing and while I wondered if we would see condors, we were rewarded with visits from several of these magnificent birds, soaring high above the canyon. This was one of our most unforgettable moments in Peru and I think you should try to do this if you possibly can when you are in the area.

We wanted to continue to Cabanaconde after seeing the Andean Condors and found a fantastic taxi service, Robert Begazo Ticona at the Chivay bus terminal. His phone number is 978 071 182. He pointed out many sights along the way, along with good vistas for photos, waited for over an hour while we watched the amazing condors and then dropped us in Cabanaconde. He speaks some English and was very eager to help. Robert definitely improved our independent visit to Colca Canyon.

Amazing landscape, and good explanations of this area by the guide from Colonial Tours. Seeing the condors fly is amazing. You have to be there before 9am in the morning, after that they will go. It was pretty crowded on the spot, but enough time and places to see these giant birds flying on the thermic winds. On the way back to Chivay we made some stops to villages where the locals are selling there stuff or have a baby-alpaca to take a picture with. We thought this was ok, as the alpaca’s are anyhow domesticated and didn’t look uncomfortable. This was definitely not the case with the eagles some locals had to take a picture with. These are captivated from the wild and disabled. Don’t go on the photo or pay anything to these guys.

We were lucky enough to see ~20 condors at a single time at around 8:30am. The view of the canyon from the several viewing decks is amazing. We took the public bus from Cabanaconde at 7:00am and arrived at the overlook at 7:30am (S.3 one way per person, although only charged us S.2 each to get back). It is not crowded at all at 7:30 but around 8 :00 - 8:30 the buses start rolling in and it gets crazy. There were plenty to condors to see from all viewpoints and there were several occasions where they landed at sat near the upper viewpoint. I counted (via photos) 14 of them at a single time. We had also stopped here around 2:00pm the prior day and saw a few then so don't limit your times to the typical 8-10am slot. We also saw some from our hotel near here at 5pm so they are around all day, just more prevalent at night.
Tip: Local bus from Cabanaconde picks up at 7am, arrives at Mirador at 7:30, picks up again at 9:00 and arrives back in Cabanaconde at 9:30. That gives you a solid 90 minutes at the viewpoint. Costs either 2 or 3 soles per person, which can be paid on the bus. Pick up the bus from the main square. The trickiest part is at Mirador at 9am, knowing which bus is the right one since there are so many buses coming in and out during that time.

So a lot of the hype of the canyon are the condors- birds. They are huge and definitely worth seeing. I'd tell you to keep your eyes open, but they're so big you won't miss them. Once you get to the Canyon area, if you wait around on one of the plateaus you'll be able to see them flying around. It's rare that you don't get to sight one. I'd recommend staying higher up.

This is the pinnacle of visiting Colca Canyon and if you're lucky the condors will be nice and visit. We only saw about a half dozen. Other days there are much more or much less.
It can get very busy with tourists so watch your bags. Be patient with the self stick crazies who seem to dominate the good points for photos.
There is good food and refreshments here and the toilets nearby are clean.
Soak up a beautiful place in the world.

Wtching the condors fly over your had in the scenery can be really impressive. However, it is definately an advantage to be there between 7 a.m. and 9a.m. This is the time the condors fly there and also the crowds are not as big as later.
(Personal tip: do not take pictures all the time and watch them for a while. Sounds stupid, but your impression will be very different afterwards)

CRUZ DEL CONDOR
Cruz Del Condor is the place to go to visit the Colca Canyon. Colca Canyon is a very deep canyon of the Colca River in southern Peru, located about 160 kilometers northwest of Arequipa and 42 km from Chivay. About 120,000 tourist visited this place annually. With a depth of 3,270 m it is one of the deepest in the world and more than twice as deep as than the Grand Canyon of the USA.
Leaving Chivay very early (at 6.00 am to get ahead of the crowds) we enjoy a very scenic drive along the Colca Valley passing the town of Yanque, Achoma, and Maca where we had a good view of the active volcano Nevado Sabancaya at 5,976 m. There is a view point of the Canyon near Maca at a place called Mirador Choquetico but the Canyon valley was covered with thick clouds so we headed for Mirador Cruz Del Condor where a crowd greeted us.
Mirador Cruz Del Condor is the home the national bird of Peru, the Condor, which can be seen at close range. Hence the name of the place. Unfortunately at the time we were there we could only see the majestic birds flying high up in the sky and we were unable to properly capture them on film. Condors here lives about 65 to 70 years and has a wingspan of up to 9 feet.
The Peruvians not only claim the Colca Canyon is far deeper than the Grand Canyon they also claim to have the longest river in the world where the river with the source at the Colco Valley joins up with the Amazon.
One of the attractions for the tourists are the hot springs that dotted the valley with the most famous La Calera in Chivay.
The landscape is volcanic with flora and fauna which is at its most beautiful time of the year in April and May. The summer months of November through March is dry and clear although the rainy season starts in December till April. Temperatures are below freezing in the winter months of June to August.

Salve,
