This awesome caravanserai has many names: "Selim", "Oberlian" or "Sulema". All referring to the beautiful 1322 AD shelter in the high mountains of Vardenyats. It was built under the orders of "Prince Chesar Oberlian", at "Selim Mountain Pass" (2.410m above sea level), to shelter all caravans travelling in the "Silk Road" in these days. "Selim Caravanserai" is the best preserved one in Armenia, with impressive basalt blocks, high reliefs above its front entrance and carved "oculi" allowing some light and fresh air in its interior. Unmissable! Enjoy!

This is built along the Selim mountain pass on the fantastic silk road for road travellors and mainly for trade persons with animals to rest in 1332.
This is at a height of 2410m from sea level.
Many such rest places were built for commercial travellors but this is large one
It comprises of large hall, partitioned into three sections with lighted roof opening, central hall for animals separated from other two stoned hass with kitchen and rest place(very old....must see the old kitchen)
You must buy fruits and also home made tasty cakes,Volka,Wines from family mini mobile market(from one vintage car by old couple).
You can also taste and buy all

This is the best example of an old silk road caravan stop and shelter anywhere in Europe. It is very well preserved in original condition. Amazing views of the valley below. A must see if you are travelling in this area

Very well preserved building used for camel caravans on the silk road. Wonderful. You need to be with someone that knows the history as not well documented on the site. However a visit is well worth the time. A real glimpse of life many centuries ago

Located at the top of the Selim Pass (2410m) to the south of Lake Sevan. Built in 1332, this is a stone-built caravanserai with room both for sleeping and camels. Holes in the ground were used to keep food cool.
A 'must-see' stop if you are going over the Pass. A place of quietness with extensive views to the south

This site offers an amazing view, and fascinating ruins marking the ancient silk roads path across armenia - large and cavenous they offer a different side to the settlement of aremenia beyond. Excellent spot for a coffee and to take in the view.

Drive in the mountain in Armenia is a good experience, landscapes changes almost every curve and they are widely different. The 50km long drive between Martuni and Yeghegnadzor really worth the rental of the car. In the middle of the road you can find this caravanserai, not beautiful outside as it is inside. Cold and spectral, it has no special description about the activity but the structure let you imagine yourself how this horses garage worked.

The Selim Caravanserai is located on the mountain road between Sevan Lake and the city of Jermuk. It is just before the small town of Nshkhark I was told about this interesting site and was on the look out along the road as it comes upon you very quickly as you are descending the major mountain and the tuning into the Trip Advisor - Selim Caravanserai is on a corner, so be careful as well as observant not to miss this great site in Armenia.
This Selim Caravanserai was built in 1332 and was along the “Great Silk Road”. The views both inside as well as outside are really great!
I suggest if you are in this area of Armenia you must stop as the visit is priceless and most enjoyable. A place not to be missed!

Just off the Vardenyats Pass as you get into Gegharkunik Province in Armenia the Selim Caravanserai is more of a historical stop than anything. The history of the stop along the Silk Road is open to interpretation so your imagination can run wild with thoughts of the exotic Silk Road, its travelers and the stories that were told about this area. The original building was destroyed in the 16th century and restored in the late 1950’s, it has some of the flair of an ancient building but not a really impressive structure, more a place to hold the stories now.
