Very amazing monestry building close to Turkish border. Amazing view to mountain Ararat. Little out of yerevan, but with a car just 30 minutes + - more, but you found easy trip from travel agencies or just driver to good price. Entrace is free so just one more plus why need visit 😅. The main building very nice, just push stronger the door, open little hard. Left side have a ladder down to secret chamber (if I not see some come out there I never found). Very small this hole and the rail slip and cold so carefully and take out the backpack because you stack. Have a "back door" way up to top of the hill with Armenian flag 🇦🇲. And the panorama from here is just WOOOW

Great place, but don’t be sucked in by the stalls selling things! All the moonstone is fake! Don’t be fooled. Great view of mount ararat

Interesting Monastery, a must do when in Yerevan, there are many companies offering daytours to Khor Virap. From there you can have awesome views of Mount Ararat! Make sure to check out the "dungeon" in Khor Virap, ladder going down to some kind of small prison, it is really creepy! Enjoyed my visit!

This is one of the most popular places to visit in Armenia, primarily for it's stunning views of mount Ararat. If you want to take some great pictures, it's definitely the place. As it is popular, expect lots of tourists but after all it's Armenia so crowds aren't what you would get in Paris or Taj Mahal.
The monastery is not the most impressive in Armenia, but interesting nevertheless. I loved descending in one of the underground crypts on a narrow ladder.
I would recommend to stop before reaching the monastery and take panoramic pictures of the mountain, monastery and the vineyards.
Definitely recommended.

Amazing place to enjoy Armenian architecture and to dive into Armenian history.
I think, Ararat mountain has the best view from this monastery.

This is a must-visit if in Armenia. Very beautiful monastery with Ararat in the background. Not a lot of walking, a lot of beggars and vendors, so be mindful.

On the plains of "Mount Ararat", near the Armenian border with Turkey, stands the most revered pilgrimage site of Armenia, the holy "Khor Virap Monastery". Literally, "Khor Virap" means "Deep Dungeon", as "St. Gregory the Illuminator" was here imprisoned for 13 years by King Tiribates III. Later on, the holy man cured King Tiribates III from some mysterious disease and became his spiritual mentor. In 301 AD, Armenia was the first country in the world to be declared a "Christian Nation". The first chapel was built back in 642 AD and has been rebuilt and renovated many times along the centuries. "Khor Virap Monastery" is surrounded by green pastures and beautiful vineyards. Iconic and biblical Mount Ararat will certainly be the backdrop of all your pictures. Unmissable! Enjoy!
