    Not impressed
Visited stone town and wasn't very impressed. It's very crowded with locals and tourists and almost full of shops selling the exact same things as the others. Unless you're a person extremely interested in old architecture then this is the tour for you. I honestly didn't enjoy it much.

Don’t miss out on the gem of all tour guides in Stone Town
We had the great fortune of someone sharing Mussawir Anjam’s contact with us and very last minute we were able to book a food tour with him. This was one of the luckiest parts of our six weeks of travel. Mussawir was warm, friendly, and so passionate about food, cleanliness, and providing us with a very well rounded, humorous, insightful and tasty food tour around Stone Town. We were really hoping for the ‘local’ food experience and that is exactly what he gave us. We tried our hand at a snacking station with seafood, had the flakiest chapati I have ever had, and the yummiest stuffed potato patty my friend is still obsessed over. He had us try sugarcane juice with lime and it is the most delightful thing I have ever had. So many of the stalls and shops he introduced to us we were able to visit confidently in the days to come. Our time with him was absolutely delightful and I recommend if you ever come to StoneTown to connect with him. Our only regret was that we had already booked other tours that we couldn’t cancel. If we had known, we just would have booked everything with him as we appreciated his company, insight and knowledge of his home community. His WhatsApp is: +255 778 743 474 Please don’t miss out on the opportunity to tour with Mussawir. Thank you for the amazing tour!

Best food tour I’ve ever done
My friend and I were staying in Stonetown for a few days and both being appreciators of good food, and knowing we were in a great place known For its melding of cultures and spices, we wanted to do a food tour. It was to our GREAT fortune and delight that we were put in contact with Mussawir (+255778743474). Mussawir was a wealth of information and is clearly passionate about good food and history. Mussawir did not simply take us around the night market but to local places that are not on the tourist trail. His standards are very high for experience, tradition, texture, taste and hygiene. We loved knowing where the best chapati lady was and which street food stalls met his high standards. It meant delicious, fun (and cheap!) eats for the duration of our stay. Not only all if this but Mussawir is simply a delight to spend the evening with! This man NEEDS his own tv food show! This was definitely the highlight of our stay in Stonetown, and if we hadn’t already booked other tours, we would have hired him for all the rest of our tours while there!

    1 day more than enough
Review: Stone Town offers a compact and concise experience, making it possible to explore everything within a couple of hours. With around three hours, you can comfortably visit all the attractions, have lunch, and complete your exploration. The best part is that you won't need a car. Walking is sufficient to cover the entire town, as there isn't much else to do beyond that. By dedicating a single day to Stone Town, you can easily accomplish all activities, including visiting the prison island, exploring Beach, and experiencing the sand bank and nearby attractions. Once you've completed your tour, there's no need to hire a car for the ehole stay only 1 day to finish this stone town then You can return to your hotel and enjoy the relaxing beach atmosphere in Kendwa Beach or a hotel in close proximity. The convenience of having everything within reach allows you to optimize your time and make the most of your trip.

Great stone town city with suleiman
We enjoyed our visit in stone town.we visited the spice market, old fort, cathedral church, palace museum and the legend freddie mercury house. There is a lot to shop ,very nice smell of the spices everywhere.the narrow streets are very tricky to walk by yourself without a guide. i would recommend getting a local guide. We highly recommend suleiman +255 756 983 368. Suleiman was an amazing guide. He was extremely knowledgeable and very slow for us to understand the stone town history.

    A great place to explore!
We visited Stone Town for the day and so glad we did. There is so much history to explore and lots to see. We felt safe and welcomed by the lovely people of Zanzibar. A must visit is the Slavery Museum.

    The Old Beautiful City
Definitely well worth.Very shocking history of the slave trade.Very interesting town with so much to see.The walking tour was very informative.Very friendly locals saying jambo to you every corner with beautiful smiles on their faces. Lots of narrow streets with so many shops and restaurants.Amazing beautiful wooden curved doors,i recommend that you hire a guide to avoid getting lost in the narrow streets,Another important point be careful of the scooters everywhere. We found suleiman's number in trip advisor recommended by many travellers and he was the best choice for us +255 756 983 368,Highly recommed him for all Tours in zanzibar,Very proffesional and smart

    Stone Town
The best place to visit in Zanzibar it's Stone Town. All of my guests get to Zanzibar, and I must take them to Stone Town for the Stone Town Tour or Walking tour. I take them around in order to visit all the historical buildings and give them a huge history of Zanzibar. Please, don't miss to visit Stone Town when you get to Zanzibar.

    Definitely Worth Visiting
This is a UNESCO World Heritage Site with many historic buildings and narrow streets. Well worth visiting either walking it yourself or with a guide. It's safe to walk around as a tourist, although I can't comment on the safety after night fall. We had a guide who added to our experience.

    Stone Town- a treasure
Our walking tour of Old Stone Town was fascinating. The narrow streets of the town left room for motorcycle, bikes and walkers only. There were stores and restaurants as well. The the coast is close by with their commerce boats. The spice smells, and flowers added to the experience. Somewhere everyone should visit.

Stone Town, Zanzibar - with the promise of history, day trips, boat rides etc. and after a busy 6 day Kenya safari we booked 6 days in Stone Town. What a disappointment. Hassled continuously by locals for taxi rides, boat trips, souvenirs, etc. it was intimidating. Sunset Dhow boat trip, we were told it was 2 hours but it was 1 hour and we got back at 6.20pm and the sunset was at 6.40 pm? Prison Island trip - we had 1 hour on the island, we we're told it was 2
hours. No leisure time just a walk round the 'prison' and then to see the turtles. All trips were expensive, disorganised, and left you feeling ripped off. We easily found our way round the Town but the continual hassle of everyone saying'Hakuna Matata, 'pole pole', 'jambo' was a nightmare!

I found Stonetown in Zanzibar a complete disappointment and its enthused promotion in various media, a complete scam. All of the ground floor space in the precinct is taken up with replicated curio and clothing stores of little merit. The stores outnumber tourists by a ratio of at least 2:1. Looking above, your view is of derelict buildings with sooty mold winning the battle on surfaces that have not seen a coat of paint in at least two decades. Some of the buildings are in danger of collapse and their walls are propped up with large beams that you have to step around. With a bit of climate change weather this area is likely to collapse. It is a grim scenario and how this area earned World Heritage list begs disbelief!

The beach is also nothing like the pictures. It’s completely covered in weed and the sea is very dirty. Lots of floating rubbish. There is no clear turquoise water here. It’s brown and disgusting.

I had reserved airb&b in another corner of Zanzibar but I was advised to check stonetiwn, I spent 4 nights in the middle of Stonetown at a hotel called Antonio Garden from outside looks a construction site not a hotel and very expensive. A 4-star hotel without ice, I would be generous to give it 2-star. I would advise anyone not to stay in stonetown unless you stay at the Hyatt which cleaner and isolated from the smelly alleys of Stonetown. If I had known how dump, smelly and filled with rubbish stonetown was I would have only spent one hour. DO NOT STAY in STONETOWN!!!!!

When we had the city tour in Stone Town with Masoudy , we got to know that he is also running a taxi service. That was great to know, so we booked him for our hotel pick up to the airport which was in the middle of the night! So we we could be sure that the pick up was in time. When we go to Zanzibar next time we will announce our arrival straight away to ensure the pickup and also during the stay to discover with him the island in his confortable, proper and air conditioned Van.

We did the spice tour, prison island and stone town trip via Zanzibar leisure tours and safaris. Our guide Abdul was amazing.
Stone Town itself is a maze of small streets, historical forts and of course the birth place of Freddie Mercury.
The markets are an attack on your senses with spices, fish and meat smells competing in the warm sun.(not for the faint hearted).
You will need a guide to explore here as you can easily get lost. Highly recommend.

* Most parts in poor condition (as expected), but some very positive developments observable: between 5 and 10 (boutique) hotels in well renovated old houses.
* Both most important museums closed as they are mostly demolished.
* Therefore, keep cool and relaxed and simply stroll around.
