We were lucky and then did an approx 1 mile circular loop to see the sun setting. Amazing views and a must do if you can 🥳Visited January 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 28 January 2024
- edinburghz123Buckinghamshire, United Kingdom82 contributionsWorth the Wait.First hike up Mam Tor. Previously had been put off by negative reviews of it being overcrowded. Started at Castleton and did a loop via Cave Dale then onto Mam Tor, Great Ridge and back to Castleton. Mam Tor was busy for a March sunny day but it was doable. The views are stunning and plenty of places to stop and have a breather. What I found annoying were the selfish dog owners who didn’t think the ‘keep dogs on leads’ signs applied for to them! Dodging dogs on a hairy hike up steep steps is no fun. Assume these are the same owners that left their dog poo bags swinging on the gates. Total imbeciles.Visited March 2024Travelled soloWritten 24 March 2024

The train stops at Edale Station which is within ten minutes of the track to Mam Tor so it was easy and stress free. We had a drink in a lovely little cafe next to the station too. The weather was fair and although a little windy at times we loved that there was no rain and the view was clear. We walked past some sheep and cows and my three year old grandson loved the whole adventure. We made it to the summit and then walked back down again. There were quite a few people there but not too many and it was a lovely day with stunning views.Visited April 2024Travelled with familyWritten 20 April 2024
- Sophie BChelmsford, United Kingdom18 contributionsMam Tor and the restGet the free pamphlet from the pub/hotel The Bull's Head. Follow the route in the pamphlet and you won't go wrong. 6.5 miles to see Mam Tor and the whole of the great ridge including Back Tor and Lose Hill. Do not bring your 60 year old mother, she might not make it. Mine did because she is hardcore. Do bring lunch and a coat - its cold and windy at the top!Visited June 2024Travelled with familyWritten 18 June 2024
- JanLondon, United Kingdom11 contributionsTrek with stunning viewsWe recently completed a hike at Mam Tor in the Peak District, located in Hope. The trail features beautiful hills and breathtaking views. The entire trek is an incline, so be prepared for a bit of a workout. Despite the challenge, it's well worth it. Along the way, we encountered sheep and cows, which added to the charm of the experience. Overall, a highly recommended hike!Visited July 2024Travelled with friendsWritten 8 July 2024
- ispeakinsongsCirencester, United Kingdom638 contributionsLovelyLovely hike, we hiked 6.8 miles across Mam Tor across elbow ridge, the great ridge and lose hill back through Castleton. However If you want a short hike just up Mam tor this is also possible. We parked at the car park near the caves which I felt was a big rip off for £10 when there are so many free spaces around where I would park next time. Needless to say get there before 10am as it gets very busy on weekends and bank holidays.Visited August 2024Travelled with familyWritten 28 August 2024

This was one of the highlights of our peak district visit. The view from the top of mam tor is breathtakingly amazing!!!! Well worth the hike which I would rate as easy for a healthy person. Even my 4-year-old easily made to the top without any complain. Although not suitable for buggies in my opinion. Also, this place does not have toilet facilities so might need to carry portable potty for young children. Excellent parking at the national trust parking which is located as the base of mam tor and free for NT members. Although plenty of free roadside parking available too!!! This should definitely be on everyone’s to do list, whilst visiting peak district. Don’t forget to take your camera (and camera stick) for great pictures.
We will definitely be visiting again on our next trip.

There are a few car parks near and further afield, plus roadside stopping. We visited on a cold overcast day and managed but it was busy, I imagine on a lovely sunny day could get very tight on the road.
The view from the top was great and the perfect place for a picnic, even if there is a bracing breeze, just wrapped up properly.

Had to visit this iconic location while we were here. Views didn't disappoint.we arrived at 7 am and the carpark was already half full. Do not even attempt to come here later than 9am as when we got back from our walk at 11 it was crazy busy and people were queuing to try and get a space. We did the ridge walk down into castleton and stopped for a lovely breakfast roll at peverell stores.

we went in December so it was snowy and very cold and icey - but we walked the great ridge walk from mam tor to loose hill was also foggy but it was packed with people.
no shops or toilets your nearest place is the little town of Castleton which is not to be missed ..
took us about 2 hours each way but it was slow going due to the weather.
we shall be returning in the summer for the views. 8/10

It’s a nice place, but don’t park on the grass verge. We used to go very often to visit this place, and today was for the first when we didn’t find any free spot on the paid parking, so we parked on the grass verge, and we received a parking ticket. I think there were more than 50 cars with parking ticket sticked on their wind screen.

What a lovely day we had on Mam Tor, it was definitely tiring climbing the three peaks (Mam Tor, Black Tor, and Lose hill pike). We started in Castleton, headed up to Treak cliff cavern, then on to Mam Tor. A good GPS app would be good to help find your way along this route (Search on App Store). Once you get to the bottom of Mam Tor, the route is clearly mapped for you with paving all the way to the top and then on to the next two peaks. After Lose hill pike the route becomes less clear, as we wanted to take a shorter route back to Castleton, but it is not clearly marked, so we ended up in Hope. (We didn’t have a GPS app at the time 😂). The views from the top are stunning, we had a picnic at the top of Mam Tor as there are little diverts that protect you from the wind. There are no food or beverages sold along the ridge, so make sure you have supplies.
It is windy at the top and you go from being hot to cold depending on if you are walking up or resting, so bear this in mind for your choice of clothes. Also there are muddy sections of the walk.
Would absolutely recommend this to everyone, however it can be a steep walk at some points

My partner and I walked up the hill yesterday. It was a rainy day, but I still enjoyed the dramatic scenery. We were aiming to park at the national trust car park, but the sat nav post code took us way off- unless parking along the road was the national trust car park. However, there was plenty of free parking along lots of roads (not too tight either) but I imagine it will be crazy busy when it is sunny, as it was very busy yesterday even in a rainy day. You can make the walk as long as you want to, but there is no way to avoid going up a hill! I do recommend this walk. There is one cafe as you ascend - blue joh n cafe - but other than that no toilets or cafe, unless you go into the local town, I assume.

We walked from the footpath in the car park in Castleton (£6 - cash only). We followed the route up to Hollins Cross which was short but steep and then along the ridge to Mam Tor. We took the less steep route back down following the road back into Castleton. Despite it being hot and sunny when we left Castleton it was very windy and raining at the top so it is best to be prepared for all conditions. Great views from the top and throughout this lovely circular walk.

This is a beautiful landmark with amazing views but the problem is that over busy periods the traffic and the car parking is appalling. We drove with the intention of parking in Castleton but after an hour in standing traffic decided to park. There is a small car park and although there is parking along the road the council have decided to close most of the parking with double yellow lines. Realistically this attraction should be advertised with a £35 parking fine as the cost.

Hello
Please could you advise which route would be easier because I'll have a 2yrs and 7yrs old with me. Would parking at the National trust car park be easier to walk up?
Many thanks
Written 23 May 2020
You can park almost literally at the top. Then it’s just a short walk up steps. Nothing difficult at all. Many people park on the roadside but the official car park will get you closer

Is mam tor open to the public during this coronavirus pandemic? Is the Castleton car park also open and do I need to book a parking space?
Written 21 May 2020
Yeah it’s all open. Castleton car park also open. No need to book. early arrival recommended as the car park can get full quickly

Hi, we climbed kinder scout recently and now looking at Mam Tor. Can anyone recommend a route that’s slightly more challenging than a 3 mile walk? Something around 6 - 9 miles that’s not too off the beaten path and easily navigated?
Thanks!

Start at Castleton and head through cave dale. You can then walk through various fields and paddocks before arriving at the base of mam Tor for the climb. From there you can either walk back down to Castleton or head to the next peak further round before descending.
Google “Stunning Castleton Circular Walk via Mam Tor (5.5 miles)” and click on the “letsgopeakdistrict” website. We did this exact walk this week and loved it

Hi, Can you mention the exact name of the official parking spot which you used please? How long would the walk to the top and back take? We also have a two year old travelling with us.... Thank You!
