Batticaloa Lagoon Environmental Learning Centre and Ecopark
Batticaloa Lagoon Environmental Learning Centre is a perfect place to learn about the lagoon ecosystem. A resource centre as well as an ideally located spot to observe the estuary, the centre shelters an exhibition of local artists’ wall paintings and displays some information about the environment. Once you are done with the centre, take a boat to cross to the Ecopark. Enjoy the natural beauty of the environment, climb the bird viewing tower to observe local birds and animals, proceed to the beach… Take your time, you are on holiday!

a walk to remember ..and then the waters to behold..
Oct 2018
my suggestion is that one must do the 3km walk along the Bar Road ,preferably in the late evening to soak in the local feel .the chance to observe and if possible interact with different types of Srilankans along the long straight road is one that would be best not missed. The lagoon on the right and the fisher folk action getting ready for the night trips around few fishing boats come next .Push on beyond the bridge and suddenly the bustle increases as this location attracts a decent load of locals around the sundown time. Options await for boating in the lagoon and the prices decent .Place is clean and safe with plenty space around to be in one's own space and time. For the curious kind a boat ride to the other end of the lagoon for a walk along the sparsely populated Batti beach is one not to miss .About 3 km beyond this beach lies HMS Hermes ,the ill fated British Air Craft carrier ,in its last resting place ,a depth about hundred feet below .

A spot to relax by the water
Mar 2019 • Solo
Something for tourists to enjoy a day on the water. Boat rides are available to the various spots on the beach. During low tide, it is possible to walk to close spots

Watch birds of brackish water environment
Jan 2019 • Couples
Eco park was accessed by a short boat ride from the Light house. Most thrilling part of the visit was the spotting of Brahminy kite in action. There were several species of birds that loved brackish water environment. Most dominant of them was the Brahminy kite hovering and gliding above looking for fish to prey on. Often they swooped down to grab a fish swimming close to the surface. Several of their nests were visible on the sand banks close to the mouth of the lagoon. This area is relatively undisturbed. Groups of Cormorants were seen sun bathing lazily. Area gets heated up by mid day and I felt that visits would be best in the morning or late afternoons towards evening.

Park has a jetty to anchor the boat. To entertain children several statues like of a Dynasorus, Giraffe etc were seen. There is also a bird watching tower.

Batticaloa Eco Park!
Sep 2018
Lagoon - A narrow but large body of water stretching from Eravur (Batticaloa district) to Kalmunai (Ampara district) 56km long and approx 200m wide. It also contains 8 islands, out of which Palanmeenmadu, Bone Island & Buffalo island are more popular.

The Eco park is located on the island of Palanmeenmadu, and can be accessed by boat. It’s a popular spot with the locals and kids. Children’s play areas, education centers birdwatching tower are some of the highlights we saw. However the boat ride was awesome!
