About
Filled with 18th-century paintings and ornate rooms, this white and gold palace is surrounded by a 1400-acre park complete with fountains, bridges, the Agate Pavilion bathhouse and the Great Pond. The Palace also has a famous Amber Room, stolen by Nazi troops during WWII, but now recreated by Russian craftsmen.

Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Very impressive building and the amount of gold is astonishing. Is a bit out of the way however so would have to drive. Grounds are nice too.

Probably Catherine Palace is my favourite among Russian royal residences. It remembers me about the animated movie “Anastasia” which is partly set there. From the movie, I can recognize the gate as well as that amazing golden ball salon. You can understand how the Tsars lived and their lavish lifestyle.

It's about 30 to 45 minutes drive from Saint Petersburg and it's definitely worth a visit. They offer three guided tours of the palace (most of them in Russian). The palace was heavily damaged by a fire at the end of WWII but it has been superbly rebuilt. I particularly enjoyed a room completely done with amber. Our tour took us through several large rooms beautifully decorated. I can't give details because the tour was in Russian but they look like ball-rooms and or dining-halls.

The only real problem we had was trying to book tickets. The website was in Russian and Google translate is not always terribly accurate. That said we managed to book 4 tickets for a visit as

As one of our party needed a wheelchair, we did not have to be herded around in a group and had many of the rooms virtually to ourselves. It really is a magnificent palace and a very enjoyable morning was spent there. One of the only downsides was that many of the Russian room attendants were unhelpful and on one occasion rather rude. It is well appointed for wheelchair users with ramps in every room. The wheelchair was very comfortable and well maintained. It was rather disappointing though that we could not have the use of a wheelchair for outside in the grounds which meant that our party were not really able to explore as much as we would’ve liked.

This is a smaller scale beautiful palace with stunning ceilings, floors and doors. Catherine really loved gold. The grounds are lovely to walk and you will have a very pleasant day.

Absolutely gorgeous. When you see this palace and park, you can feel what a great empire Russia was. One of the "must visit" places.

Very pretty palace with nice reception rooms. Of course the most impressive is the amber room, but also other rooms are very nice. Definitely a must to visit once you are in the area.

Visited here in October 2018 on a group tour with cox and kings and this was well organised and the interiors were just fantastic. The grounds are fabulous on the annex as my picture they were filming and sometime later I discovered that it was Catherine the great staring Helen Mirren and Gina McKee who we later saw at the airport.
A must while in town!
