About
Santa Severa’s Castle is one of the most evocative places of the Lazio region, located along the Tyrrhenian coast in the north of Rome, is a heritage of inestimable value both historical and cultural. The Castle owes its current name to the young Christian martyr Severa, who was killed – traditionally – on June 5, 298 AD in this place, together with his brothers Calendino and Marco, under the empire of Diocletian. The Early Christian Church was dedicated to her, dating back to the second half of the V century or the early decades of the VI century, found in the modern era and currently visible, in part, in the Piazza della Rocca.

Tranquility and beautiful peace and within a very large internal area. It was a sunny day so very busy but with space and the view out over the sea - a picture. We found an inner courtyard complete with mock mill stone on edge and the most enormous pottery urns taken from the sea bed. Not to be outdone we were graced with the presence of as black and white cat.

The visit was spectacular. the beach to the right of the castle is beautiful. But the paid access to the car park was unprotected, there wasn't a single flower except spontaneous stuff, which is fine, but lots of it, not huge squares of dust. Beach just clean enough. There are no benches except trees brought by the sea. I don't know if we entered the castle, we looked out over the sea. Eating, drinking not received.

We went up there in a late summer afternoon. It is a long windy drive from the cost and finding the entrance was a bit challenging, but basically you should go to the main square where the bars are. Next time I would check the opening times and make sure I allow plenty of time to reach the place.

The castle was about to close and we just managed to enter. It is very well restored and interesting to visit. There is a lot about life in the past centuries, but the children were more interested in running around. On a clear day the views are exceptional, in particular late in the evening, when the colours are starting to get red.
Santa Severina itself is an interesting old village, giving the impression that time stopped!

We took time out from museums to visit the chilly winter shoreline to see the Santa Severa castle. The waves crashed in and the sky was dramatic. What a nice break to walk along the sand, watch surfers in wetsuits and just breathe fresh air.
The museum was closed the day we visited; the floors were being finished. That's what happens when you are a tourist. So, we poked around, looked at the courtyard gardens and all the cats and felt refreshed. If you like seeing the sea with a gargantuan stone castle as a bonus, you'll enjoy the sights to see on the sea.

Due to the Covid-19, the Saracen Tower and part of the Museum are closed, and there are no guided tours. However, the entrance still costs €8. Quite expensive, for what is currently possible to visit and see.

Visiting the castle and the museum in the summer with a mask on the face, all windows closed and no air conditioning, was a real pain.

A few areas of the Castle are used as a hotel, improperly called "Ostello" (Hostel), and therefore are accessible only to its clients. This is quite annoying.

The "borgo" (the tiny medieval village inside the castle walls) is nice and very interesting for whoever is willing to understand what is a "human-centered" urbanisation; the castle beautiful; the museum shows the amazing techniques and endeavours ancient sailors pursued more than 2000 years ago (and probably had visited lands and territories that were "re-discovered" starting from the end of the XV century onwards).

The Etruscan-Roman Pyrgi ruins outside the Castle seem abandoned.

All things considered, although being expensive, it is an interesting place, but it is definitely not the right period to pay a visit to the Santa Severa Castle.

PS: it is quite easy to get there by train.

Santa Severa Castelo provides a magnificent backdrop to the beautiful beaches that are on two sides of the castle. The water is crystal clear and very safe for swimming.

When the beach is crowded, taking the driveway entry to the castle and parking there is much easier. We arrived before 8.00am and there was no charge. Usually it is five Euro. This end of the beach is also free from the shoulder to shoulder umbrellas :)

The café near the entrance to the castle is cheap and provides a great venue for a lovely glass of wine and a light lunch.

The castle itself is pretty spectacular. Pink in colour, it rises majestically on the shores of the ocean providing a very romantic backdrop for photos.

The medieval castle is a nice addition to what is one of the nicer beaches that are easily accessible from Rome. Take the train from the Roma Termini to Santa Severa for 4 euros and have a nice relaxing day at the beach. There are some excellent little restaurants to grab a bite.

After visiting Santa Severa just to see all the cats, stroll along the beach and enjoy the castle from the outside, we finally got the chance to visit inside. It is a pity the opening hours are quite limited, but this castle really is a gem and they have made a great effort to make the tour both interesting from a historic perspective but also entertaining with the ghost stories. The tiny church with its stunning frescoes is a real delight. The tour itself is quite rushed which is a shame as there is so much to take in - ideally need to do it twice. Well worth a visit, it will not disappoint.

We went to the beach next to the Castle as we were looking for a sea location not far from Rome. It is one hour from Rome, which is not bad to drive. The water is clean and even though the beach is not very big, we went to one of the "stabelimento" and there we rented very cheaply two lounges and a shade, and that's it! All the family very happy. I recommended if you are in Rome and need for super short sea break.
