Legend has it that the Black Madonna statue fished out of the sea has healing powers; a visit to this picturesque church just may prove it to you.

Nice visit to church during a cruise ship trip whilst in Sicily. Mass starting so a bit low key but lovely church and pleasurable drive up the hills. Great photo opportunities with the great views. Few shops around church along with souvenir shops.

We drove to the church. The road is narrow and winding, recommend going early when traffic is light. Views from the piazza are breathtaking of the Aoelian Islands. Inside the church are wonderful paintings and of course the Black Madonna.

Their website says the sanctuary is closed from 12:30 to 14:30 for the mid-day break, and at 19:00 for the night, although it stays open until 20:00 in July and August. It opens every day at 6:45.

It all depends on how much time you have ashore. Assuming that you will be arriving at Messina harbour early in the morning and will be departing late afternoon, the following would be a possible itinerary, provided that... More

Your cheaper option is the 2 hour train from Palermo to Tindari for $12-$15. The bus takes 5 hours and costs $44.
