Visited Basarbovski Rock Monestary in Basarbovo. Church in small caves in the side of a hill with many steps to climb. Building a new church at ground level but not done yet. Tribute to Saint Dimitar Basarbovski from 12th century.

Rock Monastery
for the first time his name was mentioned in Ottoman tax register from 1431. The most famous inhabitant of the monastery was born in 1685g. in the nearby. Basarbovo - St. Dimitar Besarbovski who spent his entire life here.
Feeling especially in the church situated in the rock, beautiful views, climbing the stone stairs and a new room, part of the Rock Church ...
I strongly recommend if you are near Ruse to take two hours to go to this landmark. This is a church that is analogous to the Ivanovo rock monasteries, which are included in the list of World Heritage by UNESCO and one of the 9 such facilities in Bulgaria. A popular tourist site.

Basarbovo is a small village, just 10 km from the Ruse center. It is the border of the National nature park around the river Rusenski lom. At the end of the village, near the river where a picturesque view is shown there is a monastery digged into the rocks. If you are Orthodox Christian or feel like visiting the monastery, it's a must. Prepare for steep and even dangerous stairs in the rocks! There is a beautiful yard inside the monastery, wine cellar (open only for very big Christian feasts, and not always to the public) and a souvenir shop. To reach the rock monastery, best use your own car, a taxi or a regular city bus with mysterious time schedule. Ask the locals for "Skalen manastir", they all know the directions.

We visited this site as part of a day trip from Bucharest. Even though it is very old (12th century), it is still a working monastery. Cool architecture built right into the mountainside. While not large, it was bigger than I was expecting. There is also a new monastery within walking distance which is worth a look too.

The rock monastery is located almost to the city of Rousse. If you are planning a one-day trip, it is better to combine it with Ivanovo rock monasteries in the immediate vicinity, the fortress in Cherven, the Orlova chuka cave and / or the town of Rousse.
Do not expect to see much. The place itself is sheltered and prefers to rest and merge with the surrounding nature.

Basarbovo Monastery is located south of the Danube river, and about 6-7 miles from Ruse, (Bulgaria). It is so named because of its proximity to the town of Basarbovo and dedicated to St. Dimitri of Basatbovo, a resident of the monastery in the 17th century. While the early history of the monastery has not been completely elucidated, it is thought to have been established between the 12th and 14th centuries, during the Second Bulgarian Empire. The name of the monastery appears in a Turkish Tax Register in 1431, the earliest written documentation of its existence. The monastery overlooks the Rusenski Lom river, and the canyon carved by its waters over the centuries. While this is the only functioning rock monastery in this area, there are about 40 churches along this canyon. The actual destination consists of a beautiful garden through which a path leads to a well, said to have been dug by monk Dimitrii himself. its waters are supposed to have curative powers. A chapel, built in 1937, and two rooms and a cave were added in 1956. The cave where St. Dimitri slept is well above these recent additions, reached by 48 steps; next to it there is a rock church with a large icon of the saint. Another, adjacent cave was recently converted into a small museum. There is a small cemetery on the monastery's grounds, where multiple monks were buried . In the 19th century, the monastery was largely abandoned and neglected. It was re-discovered in 1911, and since then has undergone a number of restorative works and additions.
St. Dimitrii's bones were transferred to Bucharest sometime during the Russo-Turkish war, between 1768 and 1774: he is considered the patron saint of Bucharest. The Monastery is well worth a visit. Tickets are required and can be booked online.

The functioning church is carved into the Rock and has been renovated in the past few years .You can see the colorful frescoes and walk the well maintained grounds . Adjacent to the church are few cells of monks who lived there and worth visit. There are historical records of the monastery dating back to 15 Century.

very interesting but access is hard for anyone with walking difficulties. I made it but was rather tired. Not a place to spend very long. The church is being remodelled. There are very poor locals selling their wares. Remember they are desparately poor so buy something and pay reasonable amounts. 10 euros is a fortune to them.

What are the ways to get here from the port in Ruse. I will be on a riverboat and have a day to visit but no transportation. Taxis? Tours available? Buses? Many thanks for the help...
Written 11 June 2015
Hi,
The easiest and quick way to visit the place is by taxi. Allow 2 1/2 to 3 hours for the whole trip and visit. Since you are on a tour on the river, your agent should know about the organised visit to the monastery and the various excursions from the port.I saw at least three buses with tourists groups when I visited the place.
Good luck and have a nice trip.
