- Chris MWetherby, United Kingdom1,676 contributionsExcellent facility in a small locationOur group tour of Shetland, included a stop at the Hoswick Visitor Centre. This is an interesting mix of a cafe with attractive snacks, a gift shop selling a good range of Shetland (and other) crafts and gifts. Also artifacts, pictures/photographs and information relating to the history and current activities in the area. It is an excellent facility for such a small place and we would visit again if travelling independentlyVisited September 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 28 February 2024
- PaulEdenbridge, United Kingdom20 contributionsLovely place to stay for lunchFabulous cafe, had a really lovely lunch here with a group I was part of. The team here are friendly and knowledgeable, the food is produced to order and is very tasty. The quiches are delicious as are the toasted sandwiches Tea was plentiful too. It has a very tempting gift shop tooVisited April 2024Travelled on businessWritten 26 April 2024
- ThowdmonNewcastle-under-Lyme, United Kingdom931 contributionsA Welcome stopRather a small Sassermaet burger in a large bun. My wife found it quite good. I felt it was a bit bland. I ended up putting quite a bit of ketchup on it as I felt the high percentage of bread in each mouthful was drawing the moisture out. We were glad we tried it, but probably won’t bother again. Venue rather good. Staff very young, probably learning on the job, but did everything required.Visited May 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 4 June 2024
- Karl FLiversedge, United Kingdom718 contributionsWonderful placeWe had planned to stop here for coffee but ended with a breakfast. It was stunning. Lovely ladies (Lynne and Betty in particular as well as the chef whose name I didn’t get). Great price, freshly cooked and was brilliant. The filter coffee is excellent Went in the shop as well and got some great gifts made by locals. Lovely to talk about the history of Hoswick but great advice for off the normal tourist attractions (ruined village and lime kilns at Fladdsbister is fabulous - if a man approaches you, please spend the time with Douglas as he shares his knowledge of the village which is fascinating). But the visitor centre is a must for food, history, chat and giftsVisited June 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 20 June 2024

Interesting museum but I feel it it needs more "structure" and layout as the room its all in is used for some any other things, including overspill from the café. The gift shop has good quality gifts. The café has a good menu and the soup was excellent. Parking can be a little tight as the car park is not very big.

I checked the entrance for dog signs there weren't any. Not even assistance dogs only. I went in with my dog and they were not happy. Fortunately I gave them my card so I could get some food. Luckily the weather was good and I was able to sit outside. I had mackerel pate with toast. There was 1 small slice of toast to eat an enormous portion of pate. You need two slices. The drink was in a recycle cup as was the container with the meal. The mackerel pate was in a polystyrene tub!!! Come on you make the effort to do things right - not polystyrene.

We stopped here as part of a shore excursion from a cruise. It is a combined museum (old radios), souvenir shop, info centre and cafe. We picked up a couple of small souvenirs.

We (couple with two young children) stopped along for coffee and cake (both very good) and served by very friendly staff. We did not have time to fully explore exhibitions but what we saw was impressive and we will be back.

We have visited the centre in the past to look at the exhibition. This time it was only to eat in the café area, and the rating is for that. We each had a coffee and a home-made cake. These were large and very very tasty. I expected to pay more than £10 for what we had and was most surprised at the bill - £5 - yes FIVE POUNDS!! Amazing value, coupled with a very pleasant girl serving. Although it is about a mile from the main road, it is well worth a visit - even if only to visit the café!

Having visited the Centre last year I thought would return to have coffee and buy some cards etc. (Spent over £100 there before). The place appeared to be open but there were no clients. Could I have a cappuccino please? No, we have a function on (no one to be seen) but you can have a filter coffee. Okay. Paper cup? No thanks, a real cup. We're only doing takeaways because we have a function on (still no other customers but me). No thanks, bye. If they didn't want customers there should have been a notice on the door. This is the most unfriendly behaviour I have ever encountered in these friendly and welcoming islands. Tourism is important to Shetland and Scotland please note. I will not be returning here.

Hi thank you for your review, we are sorry you didn’t enjoy your visit, we did in fact have a notice on Facebook and on the door notifying our customers we were closed due to two private functions and could only offer takeaways. I’m sorry you didn’t receive the service you expected, we try to satisfy everyone and even when we are closed to the public we try to be able to accommodate with takeaways but in this circumstance we can only apologise for your disappointment.

You may need to check that they will be open as they closed in October for a major refurbishment.
We did see a dog in there when we used it in October.
Enjoy Uphellier.
