My family and I just recently visited Azpetia, Spain. This is the birthplace of St. Ignatius de Loyola who is the founder of the Society of Jesus. Located in the heart of Basque Country of Spain, it offers the best place to discover the Book of Spritual Exercise published in the 15th century is definitely a must to visit by a pilgrim. This is the best place to find the meaning of spiritual wellness. The Jesuits who changed the world and still on the mission to lead the World in spiritual cleansing. I myself discovered the spritual and physical component when St. Ignatius himself walked what is now known as the “Camino Ignacio en Euskadi” more than five centuries ago. Along our way, we discovered the beauty of Northern Spain, friendly people, and its surrounding towns.

It was raining when my fellow pilgrims and I arrived at this amazing, massive basilica. Rain didn’t stop me from walking around the basilica to enjoy its well kept grounds, and touring the inside to witness how beautiful this place is. So much to know about St Ignatius and his history. They have a small gift store inside and also another small shop just in front of the basilica. They do have a time when they close the basilica for a few hours (perhaps lunch time). The trees lined on the side of the basilica is so sweet. It is worth the trip to come here and 🙏.

This Basilica is built incorporating the tower house where Saint Ignatius Loyola was born. The church is magnificent. The altar and side chapels are very lovely. The tower house is available to visit and is well worth the admission. The story of Saint Ignatius Loyola and the founding of the Jesuit Order is well told in the house. This is a very informative tour.

I came on a weekday, it was really quiet, no pilgrims around. The basilica was grand and beautiful. I also visited the Casa Santa Museum. Glad that our group bought a pass so we could listen to the history of the house and some life history about St. Ignatius Loyola. The museum visit was a great experience. The audio podcast was narrated clearly and very detailed, it even explained about all of the stuff inside the Casa Santa. The podcast was narrated in English, I believed they provided the pass for different languages as well.

For me a day trip to Loyola was a spiritual journey. From the trip I gained a lot of life insights from St. Ignatius Loyola. I recommend this place for a believer or even for a non-believer, because it doesn't only offer a beautiful and historical place to visit but a place full of life lessons.

The santuario is located in beautiful countryside outside of an industrial town. We came down from the coast (Getaria) and drove through really lovely country with less than lovely towns. The Basques are a hard-working people and have the industry to show for it.
The spiritual founder of the Jesuits, Ignatius, grew up in this setting and the site is a merger of his home and the basilica dedicated to the saint. For some reason I was expecting a humble home. HA! The house - a fortified five-story tower - actually was more interesting than the adjoining church. It was very impressive and moved from defensive to residential as you move upwards in floors. Lovely furnishings and interesting explanations. It certainly was larger and grander than expected.
Exhibits included sculpture, bas-reliefs, paintings and a wonderful diorama.
The basilica was a bit smaller than expected, but most impressive. It was certainly dramatic done almost entirely in black marble with a beautiful alter and ceiling. And an incredible pair of entrance doors.
Well worth the short (half hour) trip inland from the coast.

Amazing place to visit for all Jesuit educated tourists. You get to see his home next to the beautiful basilica. Azpeitia town is beautiful to walk and it was an easy drive.

A curious place for its circular basilica. Surrounded by vegetation where you can enjoy some moments of calm.

We had no idea this lovely place was here and just lucked upon it when looking for something to do in Azpeitia. The towered house is the birthplace of Saint Ignacio de Loyola in 1491 and the adjacent sanctuary, a round basilica, very impressive was built over a century later.
