We had a picture perfect morning to drive through this 1999 UNESCO Geopark. It's a fully wooded and curvy drive, passing the 12th C Ruzica Castle ruins, to the top viewpoint. Here is a stand with information signs on the 16th C Nicholas Monastery seen below as well as the long expansive view of the plain, the 16 million year old “Pannonian Sea”, encompassing all the level area of the Danube, Drava and Sava rivers and leaving the Papuk peak as an island. Quite amazing!

The Croatian county of Slavonija is known for it's wide plains and wheatfields, but there IS a part of the county which doesn't fit that description: Pozeska Kotlina (the Pozega Valley)
Dubbed "Vallis aurea" (the Golden valley) by the Roman conquerors, this valley is nestled between several hills and mountains in western part of the Slavonija county. The northernmost of these mountains is Mt. Papuk.
Despite it's utterly unimposable height (less than 800 meters), the mountain of Papuk nevertheless offers a number of attractions for serious trekkers and amateurs alike - the Geological park Jankovac, waterfall "Skakavac" ("Grasshopper"), burial grounds and ancient ruins, mountain lodges...you name it.
Rated as a "Nature Park", this marvel of Nature and History will satisfy the tastes of both casual weekend tourists (easy walks by lakes and short treks by the waterfall and historical sites) to mountaineering tracks and geological sites and parks for more serious mountaineers. Also, the mountain lodges offer meals and lodgings alike. Roads leading to the park are well marked and the directions are quite easy to read.
If you're in the vicinity and have a day's time to spend, the Nature Park Papuk (Park Prirode Papuk) is well worth the visit.

The park of a nature - PAPUK is wonderful green oasis. Go there, find you peace and leave it just the way you touched it... Hiking paths ARE VERY WELL MARKED, so if you know how to read them and you have map of that area you will be fine... Be quiet and enjoy... <3
Carry your food and water because there is only one restaurant (Jankovac) up there and at some points of the day (weekends especially) you will be served by JUST ONE MAN and you will wait LONG TIME... You have to have your own food if you want to go trough larger part of Papuk, in 1 or 2 days!! We were there for 2 days.

Without a vehicle we hitchhike from Pozega to Velida and walked up the valley of 13km with neglecting Croatians drivers along the road up, it was quite boring hike except forest on both sides. There is no public transport except taxi, into the park. Only those who are rich to drive in or hardcore hikers can get in.
We arrive Jakova at 4 pm. There is a track with information boards along introducing history and nature but all are Croatian. We can camp near the mountain lodge, with cost 150kn per person if you want a bed. The area we hiked around is spoiled by karts. The signs are not also clear. Better bring a map or it is easy to get lost. Still a gem rarely touched by tourists but locals like to go there.

I was very surprised with the beauty of the nature in Jankovac. Beautiful lake, walks, waterfalls. This jewel is beautiful at any time of the year.
The small hotel is great. Basic accommodation but clean and very comfortable rooms.
Food in the restaurant is excellent.

Beautiful park, idyllic for a weekend in nature. Although we are not mountaineers, we enjoyed a less demanding trail through the park. We must come back again.

Papuk area is highly recommended for nature lovers and hikers. The tracks are very well marked. My recommendation is to hike to Jankovac, Ivačka glava, Češljakovački vis, Nevoljaš, Mališćak... You can refresh yourself at Jankovac mountain hut where you can have cheap (10-15 Eur) but good sleep and some very good meals an drinks at very acceptable prices.
