As part of our summer holiday in France, we were spending a few days in the Somme region, exploring where our relatives had fought 99 years ago. We based ourselves in Albert which was a perfect place to visit the region.
The Courcelette Canadian Battlefield Memorial is a peaceful site on the main road at Courcelette, between Albert and Bapaume and just up the road from the site of the Windmill Tank Memorial. This memorial commemorates the battle at Flers-Courcelette in September 2016, which is significant for the first use of the tank in warfare and also marked the debut of the Canadian soldiers on the Somme battlefield.
A circular park surrounds the memorial, where more than ten varieties of maples have been planted beside the wide paths. This memorial is of particular significance for us as our Great Uncle was killed at Courcelette on 16 September 1916.
Plenty of parking at the side of the main road and there are two benches at the back of the site to sit and ponder the memorial and the surrounding area.

My cousin and his wife took us over to France and Belgium to visit the WW1 battle sites and place a rose on Grandad's grave. He was shot near the end of the war by a German sniper. The whole experience was very thought provoking and quite emotional. The guides at Courcelette were from Canadian colleges and very well versed in the history of the war and very helpful

Another of a number of block monuments to Canadian troops lost in World War I. While they are all alike, each has it's own sad story to tell.

Battlefield tour groups for Canadians will drop by Courcelette or one of the other many battlefield memorial commemorating the sacrifice and losses from World War 1. In the shadows of maple trees you will walk upon this memorial that is as solid as the perseverance of the Canadians in the Somme region that today is surrounded by farm land.
If traveling through the area and some of the memorials are on your list, it is best to do some reading before hand so that you can have a better understanding of why these memorial exist.
