We drove up with a local friend and used up most of a day wandering around Macetown and the nearby gold mining relics. The track is a serious drive, so it's probably best for most people to go on an organised tour, though there are also several tracks that you can mountain bike or hike up to get there. We walked from the Macetown site to some of the stamp batteries and found that they were significantly in tact - a tribute to the gold miners who hauled all that equipment up the mountains over a century ago! The settlement area itself is also a lovely spot to picnic or camp, with remnant shade and fruit trees still growing there. Local volunteers are working on restoring much of what remains, so I expect this destination will improve over time.
