We visited Greece to see the Ancient Greek temples and sites, and stopped at this medieval site - rich with Frankish and Crusader history as it was in between Delphi and Olympia.
If you are doing the same trip, I would recommend it: the castle is stunning, the view is beautiful and the museum is fascinating.

Must be one of the most impressive castles ever for its dominant position on top of a hill surrounded by flat plains with views out to the coast on 3 sides, can be see for miles around. Impressive museum, displays and renovated areas. Access the roof area for magnificent views out to sea. Bit tricky to drive to on narrow roads thru town but don't let that put you off.

An excellent castle to visit. Artefacts displayed well and Castle in good state. Some works have been done to show the castle as it once was. Beautiful views from the kastro.

Chlemoutsi Castle is situated on the Top of the hill overlooking Castle village in Killini area (and not Katakolo as it is mentionned).
it is one of the better well preserved (if not the best) medieval castles in Peloponissos and surely worth visiting if you are in the area.
Chateau Clermont (as it was the original name of it given by the french Prince who built it) is quite impressive with outer walls and then an inner yeard and the castle itself which was also the residence of the Prince.
One part of it is restored so you can get a pretty good idea of how the residence was organised etc and recently they also made a museum within the caste about the era of the Foreign princes in greece, the knights etc which was an excellent idea as the exhibits are in their "natural" environment.
The chidren will definitely like it.

Not as romantic as the castle at Karytaina, maybe, but very much better preserved, and fascinating for anybody with an interest in crusader / Frankish military thinking. People interested in Greece under the Franks generally might also like to go a few miles down the road to Andravida, which was their capital, to see the Church of Santa Sophia there. (See separate review.)

Chlemoutsi or Khlemoutsi castle is one of the biggest and best-preserved medieval castles in Greece. It's only 10 minutes from Kyllini port and is visible for many miles around -- which means also that you get a stunning view from the top, over miles of countryside, mountains and sea, to the islands of Zakynthos, Kefalonia, and beyond.
When we got inside, I was expecting the usual ruined walls and piles of rather meaningless stones that you tend to find in Greek castles; often they have spectacular locations but inside the castle is only interesting to the specialist. But not this time!
The castle was built in the 13th century by the crusaders and the walls still stand much higher than for most of the ruined castles in Greece. Some of the huge arched halls inside still have their roof, making a wonderful inside space which is now used for an exhibition and museum about the history of the castle and the place of Gothic architecture in Greece. Fascinating. The recent restoration program has helped to preserve it without spoiling the atmosphere with too much "new" stuff -- basically they've just tried to make it safe and protect it from further deterioration.
The information boards are way better than others that I've seen in Greece, really informative and interesting. And there's even a nice little garden area inside. Work is still continuing and they are still finding more stuff. If you're in the area, do go! It only costs 3 euros, worth every penny!

A piece of France in Greece. En route between France and the Holy Land, the Frankish Crusaders used the Peloponnese, which they called "Morea", as a stronghold. And Clemoutsi (in French: "Clairmont") was one of their most important castles.
Today, the rather compact, polygonal building complex sits on top of a modest hill overlooking the sea. Once you have passed the outer bailey and the main gate, you find yourself within a courtyard, surrounded by sturdy buildings. Inside the buildings, there are huge vaulted halls where nobility once resided. There is a museum in one of these halls with a few period artifacts and excellent explanations of the Crusaders in the Peloponnese.
From the roof, you have a commanding view over land and sea.
One of the most beautiful remains from the Crusaders' times on the Peloponnese.

This wonderful 12th century castle makes a change in Greece amongst all the BC ruins that we also visited. Not open on Mondays and Tuesdays this year as we found out too late and had a wasted journey (the guide books and internet had not caught up with this). But we returned on a Thursday and were pleased that we did so. A narrow road leads up to the castle with parking at the top. Ok unless you meet something coming the other way. Good museum and English signs.

We took our boys, 9 and 11, to visit this castle. It was worth wearing sneakers or sturdy sandals. They enjoyed the view and climbing around, although not too strenuous. Exterior parts have little if any explanation, but the unexpected interior museum section had a very well presented explanation including women's role in the Frankish castles. Worth the stop. Like most Greek museums, children had free admission. Adult ticket was 2 euro.

Am first time in Katakolo Peloponese really I expect more very disappointed. Not romantic place. Many cruise boats were at the sea.

How much time should one allow to walk around the site and visit the museum?
Written 11 September 2017
As stunning as it is there's not a lot there. The museum is small but the staff are engaging and will talk and explain more if you ask. If you're in a hurry you could whizz round in 30 mins., but at least an hour should be fine.

Does anyone know a reputable tour company that will take you to the Chlemoutsi Castle (and maybe the beach around there) and back to the cruise port (Katakolon)?
