About
The Rex has one huge screen set in a glorious 1938 art-deco proscenium with the sharpest film projection and clearest non-booming sound anywhere in the world. Throughout, its seating is big and soft. It has been called luxurious. It is better. It is civilized. It reminds us of what we have long stopped expecting from public buildings.

Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

A very different cinema experience that is so much more enjoyable. Friendly staff and the ability to sit in great comfort and have a drink whilst enjoying the film elevate this to a different level from the multi screen cinemas.
Being able to book a Royal Box make this a good venue to take anyone you wish to impress.

Lovely big comfortable seats which are staggered so the person in front (unless they are a giant with masses of hair) doesn't obscure your view. Although I'm over 60 and could get a concession on the price, I'm more than happy to pay £5 for a matinee showing (slightly more for an evening one) Its a beautiful Art Deco style cinema, far more enjoyable experience than going to an awful multiplex. Word of warning though, book early as they sell out fast but with popular films they do show for some time. I've been four times since Christmas!

We were regular visitors to The Rex before lockdown and very much missed our big comfortable chairs and table whilst watching a film experience. The films they show are always varied and a good mix of new and old favourites. It is so far away from the multiplex experience , like another planet really. So comfortable and enjoyable with the bar service to your table. We visited on Saturday 3rd July, We had a table downstairs on the lower level which gave us access to the emergency exit/ toilet access from the ground floor. This is especially good for those with disabilities/wheelchair access. You can enter through the side door which makes things so much easier. Now my husband is disabled we can still enjoy our visits to this very special and unusual cinema. I made sure my husband was seated and then checked us in upstairs. I was very impressed with the offer of any assistance we required from the very attentive staff, especially the young man who was really kind. Though we didn’t require help, we knew it was available. I very much hope the Rex continues to thrive in these strange times. It really deserves to. If you decide to visit you won’t regret it. But yes, book early !

We were given a £50 voucher for the Rex for our wedding present at the end of 2019. Unfortunately because of various lockdowns and us having our first child we’ve been unable to use it. We hoped to use it recently as our baby is finally old enough for us to leave her but the Rex refused to extend it another month saying it had already been extended by 6 months from Jan 2021 (despite us still being in a lockdown then). This is very disappointing customer service and it has unfortunately put us off from visiting again.

Going to The Rex Cinema is a wonderful experience. You step into a beautiful art deco setting - a place that is valued and looked after. It certainly makes a difference over other places. It was a popular choice for many people that evening!

This is an absolute beautiful Art Deco cinema in a fantastic building. The interior is simply stunning, staff are friendly, helpful and extremely polite. Just before the film starts the owner of this wonderful establishment says a few words about the film. We absolutely love his sense of humour the delivery and the brutal honesty of his reviews.
The whole experience is just wonderful.

Beautiful Art Deco(?) building, huge comfy seats and bags of leg room were very welcoming. However the sound is a bit lacking, 35 minutes of adverts and trailers wasn’t great and the lack of air conditioning was a tough ask for a 3hr stint watching Elvis on a very balmy night (older gent next to me left as it was unbearable at the hour mark and sat outside waiting for his wife).
I’d return to sit at a table on the ground with friends to have a few drinks and watch a movie just not in summer!

Visited with an elderly woman was kindly taken to our seats and table the friendly assistant carried our drinks . The seats are very comfortable downstairs where we sat of course not reclining, my only complaint was it was chilly we were near an exit door ( access for wheelchair users or compromised mobility.) And near toilets downstairs.
I advise you bring a knee blanket if in cooler months .
The Drinks and snack’s reasonably priced . No hot food .
Décor fabulous absolutely loved it
The area Rex runs really interesting films and foreign films too

Never ever thought I would review a cinema but the whole experience of our visit was outstanding. Building is well maintained in the style of years gone by. Staff friendly and efficient. Seating is the most comfortable seating I have ever sat on in a cinema. Sat in the upper seating area. Possible to stretch legs fully whilst lying semi prone facing the screen. Sat in row G from which the screen is small compared to chain cinemas and sound levels were relatively low. Next time I will sit nearer the screen. Ground floor sitting has table seating. Only regret is that I did not take my camera to record images of the fabulous architecture. Long may cinemas as unique as this continue to thrive and prosper.

It was great to be back in The Rex. It used to be difficult to get tickets, but (sadly) now they are plentiful. The staff are wonderful, checking at the door if you have a booking and then guiding you to your seats. We sat on the seats with tables near the front; a great cinematic experience. The host makes a short address before the film, with some sharp comments about life and then some context to the film. Get there soon and often - it is so much better than the appalling chain cinemas. Oh, snacks and drinks available. Wine is very good and most reasonably priced.

My daughter and I have tickets for 20th Feb. However she has broken her leg. Will we be able to get in earlier so she can rest on her way up to our seats in the top row?

Why does it take so long for anyone to answer the phone ? ! ***
Written 27 November 2018
I think it might be because there's only 1 person on the desk so they have to deal with face to face customers & telephone calls. I agree that it's very frustrating & I think we should all feed this back to them then hopefully things will improve!!

where are the best seats ?

Maggie, we usually sit in the back row upstairs but at the ticket desk there is a plan of the whole floor so you can choose from that. I prefer upstairs but you can get a table with swivel chairs round it downstairs, which is nice if you're with friends and you can treat yourselves to a bottle of wine and a plate of cheeses and biscuits !

Back down on the High St., look on the opposite side of the road for Costa and the small Tesco. Between them is a lane leading to a car park. Today 4 hours cost £2.50 and there was plenty of space - this was a matinee.
