This impressive castle, the earliest buildings of which date back to the 12th century, sits atop of the hill in the pretty village of Toppi. Much of the castle was built during the late 12th and early 14th centuries, though it has undergone significant changes over the intervening centuries, particularly when lightening struck and destroyed part of the tower in the 19th century. Almost from its beginnings and for much of the next 400 years, it was home to the Counts of the Guidi family. Now though, it is the Seat of the Commune of Poppi who hold their Council meetings in the castle's old ballroom.

Cost of entry was EUR7 (adults)/EUR5 (seniors).

The castle houses a good number of attractions quite apart from its architectural features, which themselves command attention. These include the moat (now empty) around the exterior, the crenellated walls and Keep, the belfry (built from the destroyed tower), the maze of interior stone staircases that reminded me of an Escher artwork, the wooden balconies onto the internal courtyard and the prison cells etc.

On the first floor, apart from the old ballroom, there is the Rilliana Library which holds over 25,000 volumes and over 800 manuscripts that was founded by Count Rilli Orsini in 1828. There was also a mirror maze and an in which there was a film playing.

On the second floor there is a chapel where there are some excellent 14th century frescoes by Taddeo Gaddi as well as a museum with a huge diorama depicting the battlefield for the Battle of Campaldino that took place in the valley below the castle in 1289. The Guidi's were on the losing side. It is thought that Dante witnessed the battle and also subsequently stayed at the castle.

There was also an excellent special exhibition entitled "Michelangelo Kidnapped" that had a film and photographs. Of particular interest to us was to discover that Poppi Castle was one of the places where treasures (paintings, statues etc) from the Uffizi and the Museum of Bargello were secretly stored and hidden here during WWII. It appears that the German Army towards the end of the war took the vast majority of these but, with the exception of a few items, notably including the Mask of a Faun attributed to Michelangelo, they were recovered by the Americans.

Unfortunately there are a good number of stairs to navigate which may be an issue for some. There are approximately 63 stairs to navigate to get to the base of the Belfry and the upper floors. There are then a further 104 wooden stairs of varying widths to climb to get to the top of the Belfry where you are rewarded with spectacular 360 degree views. Take care not to be up there when the bell goes off. I can testify that it is deafening.

Well worth a visit.

Absolutely gorgeous castle with breathtaking views. A shame that we had a kids' tour at the same time with a very loud guide.
Tickets were 7€

Dear visitor, thank you for your kind review. We are sorry to aknowledge that one of our school tours affected your visit in an unpleasant way. We do offer several types of guided tours and, of course, we have tours for schools and kids of any age. We know that kids may be loud, even if we warn them and we often use microphones in order to be heard, as we do with other tours that involve large groups of people. We hope you understand the situation and we do apologise for any inconvenience this has may caused. Regards

Great visit to the old castle. The view from the top of the belltower was all worth it.
In addition the castle was in a state with the ballroom so one could imagine well how life was like at the top and bottom of the social scale at its time.

Great museum, amazing view from the top of the tower. Other people wrote that entry was €5. That’s for 3 persons and more. With 2 adults we paid €7 per person. Almost all the writing was in Italian. Sometimes a little text jn english. Maybe a little boring for kids but we had an amazing time!

We got married here last year, the castle and grounds are stunning . The whole process was pretty straight forward and the castle provided the perfect setting for our civil ceremony.

Very nice castle, well conserved. Very impressive for our two boys (5&8), the castle is big enough to keep you busy for more then an hour, while small enough to have the youngest around. The library is impressive and gives the opportunity to explain the boys how books where made in the middleages.
The climb to the tower is steep and might scare some but definitely worth the effort for the view.

Sitting high above Poppi this beautifully restored castle is definitely worth a visit. The restored areas are excellent and the ceilings, frescos, artworks and library are all stunning. It dates back to the X century. A large 1477 tower dominates the buildings, a great climb for those fit enough!
The terra-cotta in what is the old ballroom is also outstanding. So this is a definite destination if you are in that area of Tuscany, and allow a hour because it is worth every minute.

The highlight of this ancient hilltop town is this remarkable castle. We spent about an hour and a half exploring the three levels and all the exhibits. It's wonderfully preserved and a great place to learn the history of the area. It is highly recommend.

Fascinating castle with small village settlement around. Access to the village by car is "interesting" with very necessary one-way streets. If you ignore parking until you get inside the castle walls it becomes much easier! Eclectic mix of early static electricity machines, obstetric models and early manuscripts. Something for everyone!
