About
Discover Blair Castle and go on a journey into the fascinating past of the Dukes and Earls of Atholl. Unique amongst Scottish castles, the story here leads you from Mary Queen of Scot's visit to the Civil War, and from the Jacobite cause to Queen Victoria's famous stay which led to the creation of Europe's only surviving private army, the Atholl Highlanders. Over 700 years of Scottish history are on display across 30 rooms. Highlights of the castle tour include the Baronial Entrance Hall, featuring weapons used at the Battle of Culloden; the classic Georgian styling of the Picture Staircase; the grandeur of the State Dining Room and Drawing Room; and the magnificent Ballroom, bedecked in hundreds of antlers. The Castle sits at the hub of a breathtaking historic landscape and the gardens and grounds feature a 9 acre walled garden, a peaceful wooded grove, a ruined kirk, a red deer park and a whimsical Gothic folly.

    Great gardens, boring castle.
I visited the castle and grounds on a beautifully sunny May Day with three friends. The gardens are lovely especially with the mountain backdrop. However I was terribly disappointed in the castle and self guided tour. I love history and like touring National trust places etc., but the tour here and what's on display is bizarrely reverential about the Atthol family and doesn't touch on social history for example. Who were the local "normal" people who maintained and kept the castle going? They don't get a mention. The history reported was very lopsided - nothing about how the family's acres were expanded via the Highland clearances / enclosure of lands for example. The Atthols - apart from being born into privilege - hadn't done much to excite. An exception was "Red Kitty" who married in. Nothing about stewardship of the land and what's happening now with regard to the environment. They could do a lot here with all of those but instead it's tartan / stag's head fest about a dull bunch!
Thank you for your honest feedback and for taking the time to leave us a review, I'm sorry to hear your visit fell short of expectations

Great place to visit and value for money
Great place to visit as the castle is full of history and the gardens are beautiful, There is so much to see and to do. Loved the piper who plays on the full hour. Well organized and value for money. The restaurant was busy and food was nice but the coffee could be improved.
Thank you for your review, we're pleased you enjoyed your visit to the castle & gardens. We'll take your feedback on board regarding the coffee.

Avoid if not a history buff
Nice castle and gardens with the split gardens of the tall tree park and the kept gardens in different areas. The castle itself is nice outside but unless you have an interest in the history of the family who lived here it is fairly dull. The experience seemed overpriced for 4 people and the staff on entry did not come across well. Would never go back would struggle to recommend visiting to anyone other than those with interest in history. To a place for a random visit
Thank you for taking the time to write a review. With over 30 historic rooms to explore from the Jacobites to Queen Victoria and our new Castle Couture Exhibition, I'm Sorry to hear your visit fell short. Regarding your welcome into the castle, this is certainly not the 5* standard we'd expect and we will investigate. If you could please get in touch with our team directly with more details we'd appreciate it - bookings@blair-castle.co.uk

Worth a visit but the cafe !
We were staying at Blair Athol caravan park which gave free access to gardens and a £5 entrance to castle what a treat. Both gardens and castle are lovely , we didn’t use audio guide but there was plenty of information. Less endearing was the cafe , do it yourself machine coffee was rubbish . OK it’s a modern building so can’t be a cosy cafe but try to make it welcoming. When I put my head through the door at 1600 to see if they sold icecream a member of staff shut the doors in my face a “we’re closing now” would have been polite.
Hello, thank you for your honest review, we're delighted to hear you enjoyed your visit to the castle & gardens and found the 30 rooms informative and interesting. I'm sorry to hear about your experience in our restaurant and we will take your comments on board to review.

    NOT dog friendly!
This beautiful place is NOT dog friendly! Most historic houses now provide a covered area in which you can sit with your dog and eat snacks purchased from an on-site cafe. Not this place. The very large stone flagged area to the side of the café is empty bar a few chairs presumably for people to sit on to watch their poor dogs tied up outside the window. There are not even seats or picnic benches outside to sit on in the rain! What a wasted opportunity. I would say to anybody who owns a dog do not visit the castle in inclement weather, you are not welcome.
Thank you for your review, I'm sorry to hear you left feeling disappointed with your visit. We do welcome dogs around our castle gardens but not within the castle, I'm sorry you weren't aware prior to your visit.

Great place but avoid busy times
Superb castle in a stunning location . Staff were friendly and there’s a lot to see . We arrived late in the day and it was VERY busy which meant we were pushed around the tour by the pressure of people behind us . Felt like we missed the experience as a result so I’d suggest visiting at quieter times if you can find one . Our experience wasn’t great mainly down to other visitors and I think numbers should be limited which would help the enjoyment a lot
Thank you for your honest feedback, delighted you enjoyed your visit. I'm sorry to hear your stay fell short due to the volume of visitors during your visit, the smaller areas can get busy if we have a bus tour at the time of your visit too.

    A Must See
The castle is outstanding; gives a great idea on how it is/was used. The self guided tour is very easy to follow and there are guides throughout the castle to provide extra information. We felt that we could take our time and also take photos.
Thank you for taking the time to leave us a kind review, we're pleased to hear you enjoyed the audio guide and your visit around the castle.

    Ok, but…
The castle is beautiful but there are two problems for me. 1. Cars park right in front of the castle so one cant take a really nice photo or video of the castle 2. No videos inside. This is something rediculous what I will never understand. What is a difference between a photo and video. The owner should be happy the turists come and pay.
Thank you Daniel for your honest feedback, I'm sorry to hear your visit fell short. We don't allow cars to park on the castle forecourt during opening hours but there is occasional movement throughout the day as we accept deliveries and the team move around. We welcome photographs but no filming within the castle.

    Nice manor home
Went here as a side trip. I would describe the place as more of a manor house than a castle. It was really an interesting place to visit. They had someone playing bagpipes while were there. The estate had lovely grounds and a great walled garden. It's the kind of place where you'd love to have a picnic on the grounds.
Thank you for your honest feedback, delighted to hear you enjoyed your visit to the castle and gardens.

Good place to visit but beware the stairs in the castle
This is a fabulous place to visit. The castle is very good but you do need to be able to climb up and down a large number of steps. Katerina and Barrie in the castle reception were extremely helpful and personable. The gardens are beautiful and worth the short walk to them. The piper on the bag pipes is fantastic and worth watching, if you have the time I only gave a 4 star rating as the restaurant was closed when visited and we were not informed of this, otherwise I would have given a 5 star rating.
Thank you for your lovely review Graham, delighted to hear you enjoyed your visit to the castle & gardens. I'll pass your kind mention onto the team too. I'm sorry to hear the catering fell short, when we close the restaurant the Cannon is open as a replacement for snacks and refreshments.

This was our 2nd trip to the castle. The knowledge of the staff is excellent, everyone is so friendly and helpful. There are rooms set up as they would have been at various stages of the castle’s life. Some include clothes that would have been worn in the same period. I think going round the 2nd time was even more of a wow as you appreciate what you’re seeing. Very interesting and a lovely cafe to finish the tour off.

A wonderful view of life in the 18th and 19th century. We went the very end of September, so the gardens and orchard, although still very beautiful were past their prime. The house itself was very grand with very elegant rooms showing how the upper class lived. Tour was well designed so you flowed through the complete house. Well worth the time. One of the better "castle tours" we have been on.

We visited Blair castle when we came down to the enchanted forest . ( see separate review)
This was a trip down memory lane for us as we used to visit the Pitlochry area when my wife’s grandmother was alive.
It has probably been 30 years since we actually went inside the castle itself.
We both found it really interesting and spent a lot of time viewing the exhibits. I found the Jacobite display immensely interesting And could easily have spent more time studying all the information available. .
We also had a walk round the gardens and the small ruined church which is close to the castle.
I never knew it was the burial site of the dukes and ladies of Athol . I was especially intrigued to find that Bonnie Dundee was also buried there after he was killed at the Battle of Killiecrankie.
A most memorable visit in near perfect weather conditions.

We were welcomed by a solo piper that gave the castle grounds a haunting and lovely ambiance. This extensively curated castle is historical overload. Probably best to study it a bit before going and have an overall plan. We did not take a guided tour but booking one might be helpful.
It was quite rainy the day of our visit, so we spent minimum time walking the estate gardens and grounds. To do both in one day would be ambitious.
In the Castle there were extensive weapon displays, hunting trophies and "castle couture" 1740 to 1844, all these displayed in context of decorated rooms of the period where the clothing would be worn.
Ther was an entire room dedicated to the display of beautiful castle China, wealth clearly on display.

Pulled into Blair Castle towing our caravan looking for somewhere for a quick packed lunch stop enroute up North as on the website it said there was free parking at the castle. Met by an extremely rude lady at the gate who informed us it wasn’t free and Infact £55 for the family. When we asked if we could turn in the car park she told us we would have to ‘turn as best we could at the gate’ almost impossible with a 7m long caravan. Eventually she did let us turn in the coach car park with threats that we had better come back as we would be watched. Very hostile and rude, she should not be working in the tourism industry!

Thank you for taking the time to leave us a review and I'm sorry to hear about your experience. Our website and signage upon entry mention that parking is free when purchasing a ticket for the castle or gardens. Unfortunately, we cannot allow free parking within the castle grounds, as there would be no way to monitor who gets access to the gardens.

The worst castle I have ever visited. Too commercial and more like part of an estate operating for profit. The displays inside the castle are very repetitive. If you enjoy looking at military memorabilia you will probably enjoy this part of it. The grounds are nothing special except for some large trees. The walled garden was disappointing. Couldn't find the sculpture trail and another part of the estate was estate closed off. The deer park consists of a few deer in a rather small enclosure compared to other deer parks I have visited. The tea room is self service. My husband had a cheese and bacon scone which was very dry and had no bacon in it. I had a cheese pasty with little cheese in it. Much better value for money and more enjoyable experience is Dunrobin Castle which is fabulous.

Staying in Blair Athol, it would be rude not to visit - so we walked to the Castle with our dog, thinking we'd like a coffee. However, you have to buy a ticket to get refreshments, so £8 each later we had the garden ticket and access to all of the grounds.
However, there had been a function on the previous evening so the cafe wasn't even open, and there didn't seem to be any undercover seating for people with pups to enjoy a drink!
However, the grounds and walks were immaculate and we enjoyed our wander.

One of the most beautiful castles We have ever visited. From the moment you enter the hall with it's impressive weapon display to the great hall with it's multitude of antlers. A piper plays on the hour. Add that to red deer and gardens and lakes. There was a costume display when we visited as well. A great day out.

Very pleasant visit. The Castle Tour was informative and interesting plus plenty of good walks in excellent scenery. The cafe which is large met the need and a good gift shop. Plenty of room for everything. They are particularly good at provision for Blue Badge Holders i.e. allowed nearer to entrance parking plus provision of wheelchair.
