Neighbourhood: Bondi Beach
An iconic Australian suburb, Bondi Beach is famous for its fantastic beaches and views. Once the domain of backpackers, hundreds of tourists from all over the world descend en masse to Bondi in December ready to enjoy the "Aussie summer". Bondi Beach boasts impressive ocean views all along the many restaurants and bars on Campbell Parade. Wake up early and take a dip in the surf before walking the scenic stretch from Bondi to Coogee Beach. Stroll through the Saturday organic markets in North Bondi or grab some fish and chips and relax in the grassy area opposite the beach. For more upscale cuisine, head down to Hall Street where a range of new eateries have recently opened. Just make sure to save enough energy for the buzzing nightlife Bondi Beach has to offer.

On Lamrock Ave, Bondi is a very pleasing aboriginal art gallery, the Cooee. The name is witty, since inviting the visitors to Dharug language, that the original inhabitants used. When I “heard” the call, I thought it is a must to go and see. In advance, I looked up for several other aboriginal art collections, and all of them were delightful, and a bit different than the other ones. It is obvious, that the items displayed in the gallery were chosen with great care and love. A fabulous arrangement of different artefacts of the aboriginal life. The exhibition is on two levels, and if I looking for some faults, I can find only one. Everything on display is too tempting, and your heart is bleeding since you can’t take everything with you.

Don't miss this excellent collection of Aboriginal Art from all over Australia. In a two-level cottage on a quiet Bondi street, you can explore authentic artifacts in all price ranges.
The knowledgeable attendant explained about each artist of pieces that interested myself, my son and his wife. They chose some serious works to add to their collection, while I was looking for small gifts. We left very happy!

Tucked away up a side street only a few minutes walk from the sea front. We spent about 20 minutes here looking at the current exhibition by a female aboriginal artist. The curator of the gallery was very helpful and informative, explaining to us the artist's family story (the wanderings of a bush turkey). She offered to show us other, older artifacts from their museum collection. If we had more time we would certainly have taken her up on the offer, but we had another appointment. This is a lovely gallery with a small shop. I felt that the items offered for sale in the shop were not the usual touristy items I had seen in high street locations. I would certainly visit again.

Isn't the point of travelling to experience what is unique about the places you go? There are many unique experiences in Australia, but one of them that you can actually take home is aboriginal art. Don't bother with the tourist souvenir shops downtown. This gallery has much more interesting art, many moderately priced. (And if your purchase is over A$300, ask for a tax receipt you can use to get a GST (10%) refund at the airport.)

As other reviews mentioned, the staff here are extremely knowledgeable and will happily answer questions about the region, aboriginal community, and individual artists and pieces. If you see something you like, they can also show you many other similar pieces that are not hanging on the wall at the moment. Take home a memory that you'll look at every day, and support aboriginal art at the same time.

One tip for finding Coo-ee: It's at the corner of Chambers Ave, 2 blocks up Lamrock Ave from Campbell Parade at the beach. Don't get confused by the numbers on the buildings across the street. Even though it is #31 Lamrock, it is across from #52.
