This was the most interesting place I have ever been to. Totally fascinating from start to finish. Amazing imposing but beautiful building with so many real life stories. A fantastically enthusiatic guide called Steffi, who in the end gave us a three hours tour for the price of two. Simon Hoadley

Colditz was never entertaining during those dark war years. A Prison for disruptive officers and escape proof. Prisoners thought otherwise. Half of Colditz today is a Youth Hostel. The more interesting part is open to the public and now more or less restored. Our Guide told stories of attempted escapes, home runs and lots more. Well worth a visit if... More

Our guide AnneMarie gave us an excellent tour of some of the more famous escapes and attempted escapes from the Colditz castle prison, including those made by Airey Neave. It is a fascinating story of perseverance and ingenuity. The tunnels dug by French prisoners under the chapel were quite incredible, as of course was the story of the glider. Today... More

Direct bus from Leipzig took just over an hour. The tour was very well organised and informative. I think it's important to understand that the main thing you will come away from here is the strong feeling of commitment from the prisoners. The access to the tunnels, the museum artefacts, the rebuilt glider, the visual directions and the stories bring... More

We too the guided tour and had the best guide, Alex. Luckily the bus didn't show up with the tourist hoard, so we enjoyed a private tour. Very informative and we heard some amazing stories - it was a change from the horrors of WWII, although they were always close by knowing that the prisoners here were the lucky few!... More

We went as part of an organized your, the guide was very informative and the tour was fascinating. Mostly emphasized the WW2 history of the escapees, but chilling to find it was also used as a mental hospital and hospital up till 1990s. Good small museum too. Hope it doesn't get too commercialized, the volunteers that run it were extremely... More

Colditz was made famous primarily from its use as a POW camp during WW2 housing officers who of course had a duty to attempt escape! - fortunately most of these failed which means that there are lots of great stories to be heard. Our guide was called Alex and was a very knowledgeable and funny individual which I find always... More

Booked an English guide for a tour of this castle. Received a warm welcome and had a quick look round the museum whilst waiting for the tour to begin. Steffi was excellent she took us all over the castle and brought the past to life, often with humour and empathy for both prisoners and guards. Have to be quite fit... More

Gday I was in Saxony and thumbing through sightseeing guides to discover Colditz was only an hour away from Zwickau where I was staying. Colditz is very very famous to us but the locals didn't know too much at all. Anyway its great. The guides are great. We actually had an Englishman which for me as an Australian was kinda... More

The visit was part of a holiday to Dresden/|Berlin. The tour around the castle was made very interesting by the guide Alex, a Yorkshire man, who injected humour into the tour. The walk up to the castle can be a little difficult with 3 flights of stairs to climb (about 20 steps each) and cobbled pathway between each flight. Most... More
