Description:

The Monteverde Butterfly Gardens has been teaching people about the marvels...

The Monteverde Butterfly Gardens has been teaching people about the marvels of insects and arachnids for over 20 years. Our mission has always been to change the way people view these small but fantastically diverse animals. It is not hard either- with 4 different butterfly habitats housing up to 30 species of butterfly, a leaf cutter ant colony and over 20 species of live Costa Rican insects and arachnids in our nature centre we have something that will melt the heart of even the most devout bug crusher! A dedicated and passionate group of staff and volunteers will guide you on a tour through our three acre facility where you will see just some of the amazing insects and arachnids Costa Rica has to offer! The property is lush and full of other Costa Rican favourites such as capuchin monkeys and agoutis! Birders will not be disappointed with wrens galore and common visits from Keel Billed toucan, blue crowned motmot and the occasional appearance of the famed bell bird. We are open 365 days a year, so drop by whenever you can!

Sam was a great guide from the UK, I really enjoyed his Gundam and Pacific Rim reference while talking about the hydraulic power of insects! 3 unique butterfly enclosures, a really neat leaf cutter ant exhibit and a superb discussion on Scorpions, Tarantulas and other insects! Domo Arigato Sam, Pura Vida!

If you're wondering whether to go here because you've been to butterfly houses before, I'd say do it! The Jardín de Mariposas was quite unlike the butterfly houses we'd visited in other countries. Instead of being basically just a large enclosure full of butterflies, it really is a large garden, with small forest trails, planted areas, three different enclosures housing... More

We've just had an interesting trip here with Sam who's from Bedford in the UK It was really interesting and we learnt a lot from him The place teaches you so much not just about butterflies but also other creatures such as ants, tarantulas and beetles

The guide for the bugs is one of the most entertaining and engaging people you will ever meet! Knowledgeable, personable, and almost made you like cockroaches! A must see in Monteverde! The butterfly guide was also very knowledgeable and gave us opportunity to take plenty of pictures!

The butterfly garden is about a 20-30min leisurely walk from the townsite of Santa Elena/Monteverde. They do a little education session first about some of the other insects in Costa Rica (scorpions, tarantulas, millipedes, beetles, stick/leaf insects, etc), as well as a little background info on the butterfly lifecycle. And then they do an hour-long guided tour of their 3... More

This was a fun afternoon adventure; we are biology nerds, loved the insight behind the tour. It's worth the time if you have a spare afternoon and like this sort of thing.

We have a kid who is nuts about butterflies. So this was the first attraction we visited in Monteverde. Not only did she love it (of course), but the rest of us had a blast as well. Granted the start of the tour was a little slow before moving on to the main attractions, the three butterfly enclosures. But all... More

Loved seeing all the butterflies and even got to release some so got to hold them before they flew off. All the tour guides seemed lovely, ended up chatting to a few of them afterwards. Can go on the tour then wonder round at your own pace after. Such a lovely experience and also included the insects as well.

We had a wonderful tour this AM with the enthusiastic and very knowledgeable guide, Joe. Starting off with fabulous bugs, we learned a lot more than we expected, with some very exotic live bugs, before proceeding into the three butterfly gardens, each reflecting different parts of Costa Rica. Amazing array of butterflies we had never seen (of course) and the... More
