Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Also known as the Church of St Dimitry on the Blood. This church is famous for the fresco which shows the murder of Prince Dimitry - the fresco also shows the killing of Dimitry's assassins. The church also houses the bell which was rung by a priest as an alarm at the murder.

Stopped here with our Viking tour. This is the church of Saint Dimitry on the Blood. Prince Dimitry was killed on this site when he was 8 years old. The church steel tiled floors. Uglich was an attractive town. The town was a pleasant place to walk.

During our Viking River Cruise we visited so many churches but this was one of the more interesting featuring the tragic story of Prince Dimitry. Most interesting feature was the metal floor used for heating the church so it could be used during the winter.

A small church with a steel floor and very nice frescos. I wish I understood the multitude of frescos I've seen on this trip better. Things as subtle as a hand turned inward vs outward or a face turned up vs down. Scholars must have a field day going from church to church doing interpretations.

Be careful in all of these churches on the cobble stones, very uneven steps and door sills.

This quiet little town is steeped in history, as it is over 1,000 years old and a former kremlin (fortress). To me it looked a little rundown as a town, but you have to look deeper. There are some older style buildings down by the river Volga, one of which is dedicated to little Prince Dimitry, who was murdered in 1591 there by the river.
Ok, the official explanation is he had an epileptic fit and cut his own throat while playing with his hunting knife (not much has changed in the media since then!)
However the locals built a church on the spot and uplifted him to sainthood, just in case of Ivan the terrible's revenge.
It is rather small, and can get quite crowded, so you do not get much chance to follow the story of Dimity's murder/accident painted across the walls, and the floor is a little tricky, but give the little Prince a visit if you can.
Outside is a lovely little hut where they can dress you up in traditional outfits from the 16th century and you can take photographs to impress friends and relatives. It does not cost much, and is a lot of fun for male or female wannabees!

Another church visited on our river cruise but the artwork and colours are amazing and well worth a short stop in Uglich to see.

This is a beautiful church and you may take non-flash photos. The history is quite a story of the death Prince Dmitry. The severe punishment of the bell is another story.

Make sure you bring your camera into this church, the frescoes are outstanding. There’s quicky history associated with the death of Prince Dimitri which I’m sure your guide will recount to you.

Located by the Volga River and part of the Kremlin in Uglich. Eight year old Prince Dmitry was killed here and that’s why it’s known as the Church of St Dmitry on the Blood. It was originally a wooden chapel and then replaced by stone. It is red in color to remind people of the blood spilled in this place. There are two versions of the way he died; self inflicted accidentally by a knife while he was playing or he was murdered. There are a lot of colorful frescoes telling stories and icons in the Church.
