Only open on Saturday

This National Trust property is more of a tower than a castle. I visited on a Tuesday only to find it is only open to the public on a Saturday.

Not my idea of a castle

Not worth going out of your way for, unless you have a specific interest in this type of building. Small tower at one end of the town. Presumably qualifies technically as a castle but wouldn't impress the majority. Also only open to the public one day a week. Give it a miss.

Simple Historic monument
Jul 2018 • Couples
Dalton was the historic capital of Furness and this 14th Century Tower is believed to be part of the Memorial of Furness Abbey. It is only open on Saturday afternoon but is interesting from the outside and in its surroundings which are also historic. The houses facing are from 1685 and there is a stone cross at the side too. You can park right next to it free.

More of a Pele Tower than a Castle
May 2018 • Couples
The building was originally owned by Furness Abbey as a site to administer justice and possibly defend the area from Scottish raiders.
After the dissolution it continued as a court through crown and private owners and the interior was altered.
Now owned by the NT it is administered by the Friends Of Dalton Castle and is free to enter on a Saturday between 1400 and 1700 hours.
You can see a cell looking down from the cell entrance and the one upstairs room which has information on the local area.
Very friendly ladies welcomed us and showed us the cell.
You can no longer access the roof due to H&S, not worth making a special trip to see but combine it with a visit to Furness Abbey.

Fabulous piece of history

As National Trust members, we were able to visit Dalton Castle for free but I believe the entrance fee is minimal. It is a great pice of local history with knowledgable and friendly staff.
Thank you

Very small
Feb 2018 • Couples
I’m not sure if this is a very small castle or small remains of a bigger castle. Either way, it’s not very big.

Small Building
Feb 2018 • Friends
Not much to see from the outside. Just a small tower building in the town. Good to stop off and take pictures.

Is it a castle ?
Jan 2018 • Solo
You would be disappointed if you came thinking it was a big castle. Now just purely a small tower that only opens on Saturday.
