Thiruparankundram is the first abode of the six celebrated Murugan temples. It is a originally a Sivan temple glorified by Sambandhar and Sundarar. The Sivan however will not be visible for public darshan since the pathway is blocked for pilgrim safety. It is open for only one day every year (not sureon what day). The main sanctum has the other deities carved out in a single line. We can have a darshan of Pillayar, Durgai and the Murugan in one line. The Murugan here is in a unique sitting position blessing Deivanai (his first wife), Sage Narada, Indra, Brahma, Saraswathi, Savithri. Sun and Moon Gods are seen praying from upper part of sanctum.
This is believed to be the place where Murugan married Deivanai. It is closely associated with Nakeerar as well as it is believed to be the place where Murugan vanquished a demon who was supposed to kill Nakeerar and 999 other sages as a sacrifice. Murugattrupadai was sung by Nakeerar as an invocation post which Murugan blessed them.
Durga is believed to have worshiped Shiva here and has her own kodi maram as well. There is also a Vishnu carving right opposite Shiva lingam which is rare.
The temple is usually crowded on Shasti, Kirthigai and Tuesdays. Saturday morning (without Shasti and Kirthigai) has a low crowd and we can have darshan peacefully.
The temple is clean and well maintained. It is reachable from Madurai Periyar bus stand through Buses, Share Autos, normal autos, Ola taxis etc.

Visited the temple for the 2nd time when I was at Madurai. Relatively lesser crowd this time and hence able to get good Dharshan.
Tip: one of the rarest scenes that you could get in this temple is Lord Shiva & Lord Vishnu are in straight opposite direction.

This temple is located in Madurai. A nice beautiful ancient temple. It is one of the Arupadaiveedu (6 abodes or holy shrines of Lord Murugan).

Lord Murugan graces in a sitting, wedding form with His consort Deivanai. Maharshi Narada, Indira the king of Devas, Brahmma the Creator are also around Him. Goddess of Wisdom Saraswathi without Her Veena, and Savithri are by His side while Sun, Moon, Gandharvas a community in the upper world skilled in the art of music, are above Him. The other vehicles of Lord Muruga, the sheep and the elephant are below Him.

One of the Six Abodes of Lord Muruga. Located around 12 kms from Madurai, hardly half an hour drive will take you to Thiruparukundram. Paid Dharshans are available to avoid crowd and a Queue. Free Dharshans are recommended on a relatively free day. We have climb up to the Main Deity where Lord Muruga can be worshipped.

It's a beautiful temple cut into the rocks.
For easy darshan, there is a fee of Rs.50 per head which is very convenient.
The deities carved in rocks will amaze you. Calm temple away from the city. There is a huge 'ratha' in front of the temple which is a good sight.

While visiting with elderly people, please be aware that there are lots of steps to climb which might be difficult for them.
