- deedee8vancouver bc175 contributionsWe traveled by train from Toyko to Mashiko for the Festival. Such an awesome start to our first visit to Japan!
From the train station, it's not quite a short walk to the town centre but wow! If you are interested in Ceramics and you are in Japan, this is a must see. Pottery vendors back to back to back. So much to look at - it can be overwhelming!
At the other end of town is the Shoji Hamada Memorial - again, if you are interested in Ceramics, another must see (entry fee).
The negative??? This was the first stop of our Japan trip. With one carry-on, it was difficult to decide on what to take with us! The two Mashiko pieces we brought home have been used almost daily!!!
Note - this is a full day trip. (a long day) and it got cool after 5 pm (waiting for transport). The art that are on displays changes every 3 to 4 months so its always good to go back and visit to see what is new. - angus384Tochigi, Japan89 contributionsWe visited Yoshimura Strawberry Park today and sat in the warm sun ate the most amazing strawberries to our hearts content.
The green houses were a bit hot inside but that’s what probably made the strawberries soooo sweet and juicy!!

Too bad not enough showcase of the artists to know who did the wares (both japanese and english), that kind of downgraded the experience. Overall, lovely place to walk and enjoy the different wares on display in the many rooms. It doesn't feel like a farmer's market. We went for a late lunch, but several items were sold out. Settled for the Root Vegetable Kima Curry and the local Mashiko speciality, "Hottojiru"-a play on Hot Soup, filled with vegetables and "Suiton" -Mashiko-grown barley mochi, like a gnocchi dumpling in miso soup. The tasty "Shichimi" chili spice blend in the bottle is one of their products. If it is nice weather, grab an onigiri or snack and go out the back and sit looking at the mountains behind the spreading field. Lovely!

- hide_10London, UK44 contributionsTsukamoto is one of the larger pottery centres with a whole host of activities.
They have a very large shop almost warehouse in dimensions, restaurant/cafe, museum and the chance to try pottery experiences.
Since it was off season I was able to join a pottery experience 15 minutes before they started.
The instruction is mainly conducted in Japanese but by careful watching and in broken English, you get enough of an idea. The only setback is that they will not send your items overseas and it may take 2 months before they've been glazed and fired. If you have friends or family in Japan that can have the items delivered to them then that would be convenient.
I did the throwing experience and as opposed to the pottery experience in Kyoto there was more instruction given although the harder parts are still done by the tutor.
There is also handbuilding and decoration as other possible experiences.
