We spent 2 nights here in March and absolutely loved it. Its a small and peaceful village, surrounded by beautiful nature. I would definitely splurge a little bit and stay at a traditional Ryokan with indoor and outdoor onsen (and maybe even with a private onsen), which serves halfboard and great Kaiseki meals.

There is not much to do, besides enjoying the onsen, walking around and enjoying the peaceful atmosphere. Its best to come with enough cash, as there are no ATM's in Kurakowa Onsen.

This is the first time we saw "hairy" mountains. Enjoyed the drive very much. Extremely scenic and lovely photo spot! We did not catch the sunset but it's still very very lovely.

You can enjoy truly 360 degrees panoramic view there. When it is fine, incredibly great view looking Mt Aso and Mt Kuju in the distance. This spot is also known as "power spot" since there are some Sumerian script inscribed on the stone at the top of he hill. No one knows why.
It deserves 200 yen admission. Mind that this place is accessible only by cars. No public transportation available.

We went there in the morning and were the only ones which was great !
We could easily walk around and step on stones to cross the river and have a little adventure.
The water is clear and in a hot day it was nice to be near the water.
