I went through the Royal Palace of Portici on a guided tour (also including the Botanical Garden; but this visit did not include the antiquities of Herculaneum). The visits allow you to walk along the monumental staircase and many internal rooms. Since the Royal Palace is now the seat of the Faculty of Agriculture of the University of Naples, many rooms are now used for didactic functions or for the governing bodies of the Faculty, while retaining the original monumental character.
In any case, partly by the guided route, partly by the path that can be followed independently outside the Reggia, in the part lying downstream of it and looking at the sea, one perceives the general plan established at the time when the Reggia was designed (1738) by Charles III, only four years after the advent of the dynasty in the Kingdom of Naples: the garden downstream of the palace, the hunting reserve (later the Botanical Garden) upstream: the Reggia itself "hinged" on the main road that from Naples leads to Salerno and further. The building of the Reggia appears as a massive construction, with a quadrangular plan superimposed on this main road, which in this way enters and exits the courtyard on the two opposite sides - west and east - of the Palace: a singular mix between the space of the monarch and public transit area.
It's impressive to learn that the space now occupied by the garden, between the Reggia and the sea, was a rugged and uncultivated expanse of lava, originating from the 1631 eruption; which had caused perhaps 4000 deaths, in Torre del Greco, Portici and elsewhere.
Between the garden and the sea, almost on the shoreline, the railway line was then built in 1839: in the stretch between Portici and Naples, it was the first railway built in the Italian peninsula, with the aim of facilitating the movements of the Royal Court between Naples and this suburban palace.

This place belongs to the first Italian railway from Naples to Portici and is close to the biggest railway museum in Italy called "Pietrarsa".
From that spot it also astonishing see Vesuvio and Naples.

The least known of the 4 royal residences of the Bourbons, this palazzo is in the process of becoming a museum and can be visited daily on tours or alone. You can visit one side of the palace, some of the king's rooms and the original museum of finds from Pompeii and Herculaneum, before the collection became too large and it was moved to Naples. Eventually the palace became part of the Agriculture Faculty of Naples University, which is still there, but according to the guide a new building is under construction and they should move out within the next 5 years, allowing the whole palace to be restored and opened as a museum. At the moment you can visit one side of it where most of the walls and ceilings have been restored. There's obviously still a lot of work to do, but it's worth seeing if you are in the area. There are 2 guides, one for the palace and one for the botanic gardens. Tours are not available in English at the moment, though there are descriptions in some of the rooms

This mid size botanic garden is just wonderful, well worth an hour to spend in the perfect silence and peace.I visited the garden on a quiet saturday afternoon when there was no other visitor around. The whole garden is surrounded by historical buildings way off the streets so the only sound you can hear is the birdsong...
If you around go and chill here, look around, exotic trees and flowers in a perfectly calm enviroment.
    Rare experience...

Get the bus from Portici. Take water and good shoes. Fantastic views into the crater and well worth the 20 minute walk from the bus station. Really great trip.

Not the most magnificent of palaces, off the beaten track, and definitely in need of repair and restoration, but gloriously grandiose and worth your time if you are interested in history and architecture. The grand staircase is absolutely breath-taking.

Lovely people, fabulous house, good location walking distance to the train station. Interior is dark so cool in the summer. No aircon in my room but cool non the less. Reasonable value for money, I prefer this to a modern hotel.
