The best adventure park me and my kids have been to till date. We are from California and have been to almost all parks there and will rate this higher. Beautiful scenery and a view of the entire city from top. It was so much fun ziplining on a cliff, swimming in underground caves, jumping from water zip lines and riding in our splash hammocks! Do visit Hoyo Azul. There is nothing more refreshing on a hot summer day. We reached there at 9 am and after signing waivers and other formalities were ready to do first ride in 10 minutes. We went there on a week day maybe that is reason for no rush. Water and other beverages come at $2 so don’t bother carrying too much . Enough to drink and eat that you will survive the day. Staff extremely friendly and nice . Contrary to what some other reviews indicated there is too much tipping pressure we don’t agree. It will not be a bad idea to carry cash and tip generously as staff is working so hard in such heat . Also locker facilities come very handy and they are big lockers and can take a lot of stuff . Best part they are free. Do carry regular shoes and swim shoes and keep interchanging based on the activity. Take tons of pictures and carry water proof case for phone . Also remember everything is available also in their store and is average price so no need to worry . Love the park and will do it again.

Really nice but you should get there early.
It's a very nice facility and I can only assume that it can get busy.
The smaller laguna is great for swimming but to really enjoy the water, get there early so have the place to yourself.

You can zipline and drop into the larger laguna but follow the guide lines when you drop into the water to avoid injury.

We spend a few days in the Semana Bay area arriving from the south to reach the sleepy town of Sabana de la Mar on the south side of the bay. We'd read about the 'ferry' that went from there to Santa Barbara de Semana (often just called Semana) and even imagined bringing a rental car across. Well you can't. In fact bringing yourself and a small carry on bag is quite enough of a challenge, especially with the unusually rough seas we encountered. The 'ferry' is a small (33ft/10m) wooden boat, with some wooden benches inside and windows - or at least plastic 'curtains' - on most sides. It ploughed its way through heavy seas with waves frequently breaking over the front windscreen and the largest drops provoking screams and laughter from our local fellow travellers. Life jackets may have been in the large box in the centre of the boat but I wouldn't be sure of that. Getting on and off involved a well-timed (and generously assisted) step from boat to rickety plank to boardwalk. One woman's bag went in the drink. The fare was a reasonable $5 and the return crossing less rough but this is not the frail, disabled or those of nervous disposition. That said, it was some experience. The real attractions are: on the north side - whale watching - a world class experience with 'Whales Semana' ; beaches - especially La Playita ; Food - some great restaurants at reasonable prices - with a distinctly Italian flavour.
On the south side : Los Haitises National Park is wonderful - a large expanse of mangrove trees with some pre-historic cave drawings. Our boat was a small open one with an outboard and our 'captain' seemed in a bit of a hurry. There were many birds to see - some quite spectacular - but a more leisurely approach would have made them easier to spot. However we were just 2 with a guide - who also took us (both!) to and from the town on the back of his 100cc Suzuki. Another memorable experience. In summary - this is a great place if you are not too bothered about health & safety and have at least a little Spanish.

We did a tour along the river from our cruise ship. Certainly nothing like a river we have been on before. Though the trip was not quite what was expected the river is worth seeing - fantastic scenery, abandoned properties and different wildlife.

    Worth seeing.

We toured here while staying nearby. The boat could've used a more powerful motor, but we enjoyed what we saw. Beautiful place!

Lake Enriquillo is a beautiful, hot, and magic spot in the southwest of the Dominican Republic. It is the largest and most hypersaline lake in the Caribbean. The water in the lake can reach hypersaline levels up to 66% higher than sea water. It was previously called Lake Xaragua (Jaragua) after the Taino chiefdom in which it was located. The Lake was formed 10 million years ago when the north island, which was the area toward the Sierra the Neiba’s and the south island, which included Sierra del Bahoruco, le Massif de la Selle, and the Tiburon Peninsula in today Haiti - joined as result of earth movement that formed the Hispaniola island (see photo No. 2).

Although arid and harsh, the area is rich in wildlife. Among the fauna: the American flamingos, 61 other species of birds, three species of fishes, and American crocodiles. The Ricord’s and rhinoceros iguana are endemic species. The iguanas are the most welcoming of all the inhabitants in the area.

The flora is 10 % endemic and includes cacti, bayahonda, cambrón, guayacán, baitoa, cayucos, melón espinos, and many other species.

The journey to the Lake is as exciting as the destination. In our way we cross cities and small towns – San Cristobal, Bani, Azua, Tamayo, Galvan, Neiba, Postrer Rio, Los Rios, Villa Jaragua. During a big part of the trip, the majestic an imposing Sierra del Bahoruco made us company. The physical environment around the Lake is captivating and the sensation of being in a special place is worth the trip.

Got there early and hired a guided 2 hour boat trip . Only people on the Laguna so the peace and ambiance exceptional.
OK the guide was in Spanish , but he had a visual guide to the birds so no problemo.
Saw Ibis , Tricoloured Heron , Egrets , Plovers , Spoonbills and Flamingoes etc.
    Take binoculars as an essential.
Walked on an island with Iguanas strolling around.

We go to Cabarete for several onths every year and all our visitors are taken there for lunch. I have also recommended this venue to many people, all who have expressed their pleasure with the experience. On our last visit, we took the boat down the river. We are currently waiting for a taxi to take our visiting grandchildren for lunch.

Look for the homemade sign in the left. Here is a very friendly park office. All the tips are listed with prices, so no scams here.

A tour to the island wit iguana and the bay with birds and flamingos well cost 3.500 and last 2 to 2,5 hours. Boats have a sail to cover for the sun. A guide take you and push the boat at a point in order to get close to the birds.

The mud of the lagoon can be used as a mud mask and some will take it home.

Highly recommended. We gave a small tip, five usd, but it is not expected.

As of December of 2017, the road to the trailhead is easily accessible in any vehicle. It is paved until the last two kilometers, which are gravel, and then switches to packed sand that leads to a parking lot.

The first 3/4 of a mile or so of the trail has a decent amount of elevation gain and loss and then levels out for a couple of miles. It varies from open road to narrow path and is easily recognizable. We passed several friendly locals with donkeys carrying goods.

We only had a few hours to check it out and had to turn around at the 3 mile point but what we did see was absolutely stunning. The variety of views, plants and topography made us wish we had time to finish the trail.

Standard advice applies: make sure you have enough water, snacks and daylight. Make sure someone knows you are out on the trail. Wear good shoes and check the weather before going.

It had rained the evening prior and we didn’t head out until later in the afternoon. There were still some muddy spots but not anything unreasonable. I do not recommend hiking this trail if it is raining or if there has been a recent heavy rain without sufficient time to dry out.

Fun fact: Google Maps will work on an iPhone in airplane mode with GPS enabled. This is handy way to track your progress along the trail.

Keep in mind the trail runs along the east side of the peninsula and in the shadow of the mountain so allow plenty of time for the return trip as it will get dark earlier than expected. Take the time to relax in the refreshing crystal clear waters of Cano Frio after your hike and enjoy your adventure!

Cano Frio or cold creek is a gorgeous crystal clear river that is feed from undergrounds springs. This very shallow river winds through the lush forest surrounded by high mountains and joins the ocean at Play Rincon. The entire location is virgen land surrounded by High mountains with a beach that is of of many colors. The ride to the location takes about an hour from Samana and the road is paved until you get to Playa Rincon. You will then have to drive on the beach for about 1/4 of a mile to reach the river. There you can enjoy the river and the beach at no cost, there is no fee to visit this location. There are plenty of food vendors that will prepare you a great meal of fresh fish, lobster, rice, fried plantains, etc. A must see location.

Rio Sonador is a River about 30km away from puertoplata and sosua, this water is crystal clear and super refreshing. A place where you can enjoy and explore nature. When you arrive you will be charge a entree fee which is 100pesos equivalent to 2USD. After paying you will have a wrist band placed on you. Then you will have to walk downhill approximately 350steps. On your way back up you will have to walk those 350steps uphill... YIKES... but if you do not have the physican condition to do so, don’t worry you can rent a horse for 100pesos as well 2USD and ride it back up to the entry spot.

It’s very close to Dudu Lagoon, and obviously part of the same underground water system, but much more beautiful than its more famous and much larger neighbour.

It’s well signposted off the main road, and then a very short drive to the car park. It’s 100 pesos to walk down to the pool, which is indeed a shimmering blue. You can swim in the pool, and there are several places to take photos.

There are toilets here and a covered picnic area, but no food on sale.
