We opted for a private tour to maximize our time in Mexico City. This tour included a visit to Coyoacán, Diego Riveras home and the Xochimilco boat experience. Our guide, Garbine, and driver, Damien, picked us up promptly at the JW Marriott at 10:00am and we headed to Coyoacán which took about 40 minutes. Garbine explained the history of the area and introduced us to different foods at the market. The market reminded us of a smaller Boqueria like in Barcelona, but not touristy at all. Of course we had to see the insect delicacies but declined to try any. There were even scorpions covered in chocolate. There were also places to sit and eat that we might try when we come back. We did try some street food though, which was good.
We also toured the artisanal market which had a wide variety of crafts but many of the vendors were still closed for the holiday week. There is a trade off coming during the holiday week— less traffic, but some shops are closed. Next we visited Diego Riveras home which is connected to Fridas by a bridge. Diego also has a collection of ancient artifacts from the region on display. We then headed south of the city to Xochimilco. We ordered lunch in advance and ate on the boat. It was really peaceful because not many boats were out. Apparently on the weekends many families celebrate birthdays and these are big party boats. Vendors will also come up to sell flowers, food, drinks while you are cruising. Mariachis also come by if you want them to sing for you. Garbine was a super knowledgeable guide. She has a passion for the foods of Mexico, the history and is a student of anthropology so her stories about the areas were really interesting. Garbine and Damien really made this a great excursion and we’d recommend this tour.
