Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

- John BSwansea, UK115 contributionsYou could possibly walk through Jamestown during the day and not notice it , but at night when lit up this amazing pice of engineering looks like a stairway to the starsWritten 4 September 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Eileen108Mount Shasta, CA5,613 contributionsI came on a small group tour on a cruise ship, this is a must-do place to visit! They are upkeeping it very nicely, with a lot of period items that are meaningful, and a great gift store where I bought several great items to remember my trip. I wish we had more time here to go slower through the house and garden, but we were rushed.Written 21 July 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Mark W11 contributionsWe went to mark the anniversary of Napoleon's death when they have a special ceremony. It's a beautiful spot, well-kept and tended gardens, lovely trees. Well worth visiting to look around.Written 6 November 2019This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
- Eileen108Mount Shasta, CA5,613 contributionsWe came here during an island tour when our cruise ship docked for a day in Feb 2024, so we did not have time for a house tour. There was a nice lady at the gate and we had to pay a few GBP to be allowed on the grounds to interact with the several tortoises, and take pictures with Jonathan, the oldest one. It was fun and I was grateful we could do that!Written 21 July 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
- DavidffcLondon, UK212 contributionsWe were absolutely blown away by the museum at Saint Helena for a small island with limited resources. This is an absolutely brilliant museum. It explained the long and varied history of Saint Helena in a very engaging way, it didn't shy away from difficult issues such as the African slave trade and the imprisonment of the Boer War prisoners and Zulu warriors who were held on the island. It's also showed there's a lot more to Saint Helena and it's history than the fact that Napoleon went there. This place is absolutely recommended.Written 21 April 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.

- lonewolf44Kingston upon Thames, UK1,310 contributionsGenial Paul, who owns and runs St Helena's own distillery, will give you a great, informative tour if you book it with the helpful tourist office in Jamestown. He has run it in his garage below his house (signposted off the road outside in Alarm Forest) since the early 2000s. He distils the island's gin, as well as making brandy and mountain mist, a coffee liqueur. He'll let you sample all three (they're all excellent) and if you're lucky, tungi, which he used to make from the fruit of the prickly pear cactus. It was a great, convivial way to spend an hour while I was on St Helena. Thoroughly recommended!!!!Written 12 August 2019This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
- Peter FPretoria, South Africa179 contributionsThe church is set just off the main street in Jamestown. - lonewolf44Kingston upon Thames, UK1,310 contributionsThere's a little confusion over which of 4 peaks is actually Diana's Peak (the highest point on St Helena) but who cares about such finnicky details when the views are so spectacular?! If you time your ascent you can see the plane landing or taking off from the airport, as well as the whole island spread out around you. It showed why St Helena was described as an emerald wrapped in granite! You'll need a car to get to the start of the walk and it is quite a steep walk up so bring water and you'll need a reasonable level of fitness. There are quite a lot of steps - which is quite a marvel of infrastructure a- and you can walk fairly easily between the 4 peaks. Look out too for endemic cabbage trees and other local wildlife and flora.Written 12 August 2019This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Isabelle DComerio, Italy17 contributionsAs often on this island, the view is fantastic! - Velu SWheaton, IL65 contributionsTook a long beautiful trail to visit Mount Actaeon on the way to Diana's Peak. What a beautiful place!Written 13 February 2020This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
- lonewolf44Kingston upon Thames, UK1,310 contributionsIn some ways Prosperous Bay is a bit of a misnomer as this is on the less populated side of the island, with scrubby ground where the endemic wirebird can be found. However you get terrific views towards the Barn and the airport, as well as towards Diana's Peak and the island's lush interior. Nearby is the amazing Millennium Forest, an ambitious and inspiring project to restore the island's native vegetation (denuded over centuries by goats and invasive species brought in by settlers). You can plant a tree for ÂŁ10 if you visit the National Trust office in Jamestown. Also look out for the St Helena ebony flower, thought to be instinct, but found by a local botanist, clinging to a remote cliff and now, while still officially endangered, brought back to more healthy and sustainable numbers. Oh yes - and you'll need a car to get here as it would be a long up and down walk from any of the settlements!Written 12 August 2019This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - ColeSchmooLondon, UK53 contributionsWalking in St Helena isn't like anywhere else - no fences are going to protect you from cliff edges, and sometimes the terrain (such as the scree on coastal walks) takes some getting used to. The toughest bit of the Barn hike is the ridge, downhill on scree, a narrow path with cliff edge on the left and 'death by cactus' on the right. Don't go for the first time without a guide, and absolutely wear the right shoes. If you're not a practised walker, don't do this at all. But if you are a strong walker, then well, if this was skiing this would be a 'black' run, and if you can easily handle this, then you might as well start asking locals about the 'blue dot walks'.Written 8 August 2018This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC.
