Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

What travellers are saying
- Bob S1 contributionGood drinks. Nice regulars Good music. All let down by the reek of urine! No door on the gents toilet, isn't helping mattersWritten 25 June 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
- Scenic047830370761 contributionMy family and I had our first experience of Axe throwing today at WAX Newquay. Our instructor Sam was so friendly and very knowledgeable. We felt really comfortable with the instructions we were given and the tips he was able to give based on our throws on how to achieve better were spot on. Highly recommend this as both a family activity (over 12) or a group trip out. We never tried the food, so we are unable to review that on this occasion.Written 18 September 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Would definitely recommend.Written 30 October 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
- ExpertReviewer99Leeds, UK1,746 contributionsMy boyfriend and I popped in here for a spot of lunch while in Mousehole. We were warmly welcomed and delighted when the fire was lit, which made for a cosy visit. We shared a chicken wrap and some chips. Lovely, popular pub.Written 2 January 2025This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.

- klp77Albrighton, UK153 contributionsWanted to make the most of some September sunshine so thought we'd give this place a go. Was a bit hesitant due to the recent reviews, but the thought of lunch right on the beach won. And we're so glad we went. If you're after cheap food and drinks then don't come here, but if you're happy to pay for an amazing setting with good quality drinks and really tasty food then you won't regret it. We had the crayfish nachos (so tasty and refreshing) and beef chilli and rice and all thoroughly enjoyed it. Toilets were clean and plenty of them. Fab place to sit for a few hours people (and dog) watching in the sunshine.Written 15 September 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - pedrothebandit_11Murcia, Spain32 contributionsA fantastic friendly locals pub , great selection of real ales and lager, and a great atmosphere, always a fire on the go and a warm welcome from the Barman and owner, no food but you can bring your own pasty from the butchers almost next door.
This is a miners farmers and fishermen’s pub , also frequented by Royal Marines on a course in the area.
Throughly recommend a visit but be polite and wait to be served, don’t wave your notes at the bar staff or you will wait.Written 22 January 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Top location on the harbour, and also has outside seating. Doesn't serve food, but you can bring in your own take away, which is a bonus, and the staff are helpful and friendly.Written 24 October 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Landlord just got back from a brewery trip but alas, last orders had been rang and the night ended but a good find and we will pass by again when the lights are on! So good to find at least one pub in St Ives that isn't a slave to Doombar and Tribute. An oasis in the desert of mass market pubs.
It is tiny so be prepared to squeze in. No food other than nuts ands scratchings. Not the place to go for fancy cocktails or to take a horde of kids. There are a million other places in St Ives for that.
Just interesting beer and real ale lovers!
Oh and the view out of the window is so cool.Written 2 November 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Went for the Helston Sea Shanty Festival which was outstanding. Big tent, outside bar, pasties, music. what more do you want?
I did get felt up by a ghost though. My other half saw a ghostly shadow go past me and I felt 4 distinct taps on my harm. Just saying.Written 14 March 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews. - martin rCornwall, UK35 contributionsOk, now we stayed in the lodges, and I highly recommend these little flats.
But,,,,,
Ted, the owner is very eccentric, and in my view has to be taken with a pinch of salt.
If you stay at the hotel Ted will invite you to see the Light Box.
Basically he will take you to the basement of the hotel where there is a staged area of art. It is a bizarre area with graffiti on the walls, art equipment all staged. Ted will speak about him self a lot and his achievements in life. He is an acclaimed artist apparently and you will see examples of his art all around the hotel. I am no expert, but the art is certainly different.
He will sing to you ( a little awkward) and then finally take you to the famous 'Light Box'
It's a sales pitch folks where he will want you to purchase very expensive art. That's it, the famous Light Box is nothing more than a box, with a light bulb in it, to show case his art.
It's rubbish!!
If you like his art then by all means do what you will, but in my view if you do go to the hotel, treat it as am experience and a bit of fun. And if you are uncomfortable, just leave.
This Hotel is in a beautiful part of the world and the Castle and surrounding area is most definatley the attraction here, just don't fall for Ted's little game.
You can't miss Ted, he wears a jumper with his name on it.
The staff at the hotel are great, and the facilities in my opinion were ok, nothing special, but I will never forget Ted and the experience of the Light Box.
Additionally do some research on the hotel and it's connections to Scientology.
Enjoy folks, but I won't be going back there.Written 25 January 2025This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. The decor catches the eye and the bar staff were prompt and pleasant.
