Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

- MKane2001County Down, UK119 contributionsThe weather on the day we visited Hill Top was unforgiving but once we entered the house it was all forgotten. It was so magical to see the property and belongings of such an amazing artist, author and woman. It was a gift to the soul to walk around the rooms knowing that Beatrix had been here before us. The doll house is an added bonus.
I am surprised at the negative comments regarding parking as all of the Lake District villages are the same which respectfully is due to the heritage of the land.
If you are a Beatrix Potter fan this site is a must and the gardens are delightful.Written 21 September 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Follow the old golf road round instead of app way through the woods as to over grown now. Views are fantastic as expected 🤩 great morning outWritten 11 September 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - tessbear9802018York, UK160 contributionsWent for a nice walk in forest. Disappointing to see people have been cutting across paths, plastic barriers up , could these not replaced by some wood fences, not really in keeping with the environment. Toilets on site. Cafe as well. Some shops but where closed on my visit. Car park fees in place, but not a standard rate . Nice place to visit.Written 29 September 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
- James PCambridge, UK2,788 contributionsThe car park is small, right at the end of the lane on the left. Don't get confused with Rydal Hall entrance on the right.
The house is interesting but the star of the show is the gardens. Explore the numerous paths, terraces, and hidden nooks, with great views. This was Wordsworth's home for many years and you can see why he was so inspired.Written 29 August 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. If you arrive from the west, White Moss car parks, you find the main cave first. If you arrive from the eastern end of the lake, you come across a smaller cave first and then need to continue the climb up to the main one.Written 29 August 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. I picked this one to get home from Grasmere to near Penrith on the interesting route via Ullswater.
Far harder than I could ever have imagined and a serious test of bike and rider. Starts steep immediately out of Ambleside and doesn't let up for over 2km. Some relief on the flatter approach to the end. But the brutal final slope is always in view.
Check your brakes before starting as the descent will be terrifying without strong brakes on the 15-20% sections.
The road surface is pretty good and there's not much traffic.Written 5 August 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. On the second day we tried to walk part of the route again to also walk around Grasmere but the path to the bridge was completely flooded.Written 29 August 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Nailah AljasmiRas Al Khaimah, United Arab Emirates607 contributionsWe stopped over to see the manor/hall and gardens. Little afternoon walk, we didn’t realize that the parking was open as the sign said no parking, we actually stopped at the tea rooms outside, parked, ate, used washrooms and then entered the grounds. Parking is available inside the groups behind the gates. The coffee shop wasn’t busy, there were a few tables available but we’d already eaten beforehand next door. It’s a lovely spot to go for tea/ cake and a small wall afterwards. We noticed there’s campers there too, not sure about the camping arrangements but looks like a great spot! Very green and lush. The grounds were well kept and clean.Written 27 September 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.

The cost includes returns for a whole year. The lovely cafe is a little gem too. You will not be dissapointed if you choose to visit here. Though as stated the gardens are not all on the level so are not easily accessible for those with reduced mobility.Written 24 August 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Ann FHolmfirth, UK27 contributionsWell worth the walk, from here is one of the most beautiful veiws in the Lake District, we all went as a family to celebrate what would have been my late husbands/their dads birthday, holds very special memories, we sat on the crag and had a picnic, perfect dayWritten 9 September 2022This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - SuratrichardSurat Thani, Thailand2,515 contributionsThis National Trust property is a hidden gem particularly in April/May when the rhododendrons, azaleas and camellias can be seen at their best. This is a woodland garden so don’t expect herbaceous borders and beds full of colourful annuals but what you will see, amongst the above mentioned plants are some magnificent views of Windermere with the backdrop of the fells.
There’s a very small car park and the terrain is quite rough in places so some care is needed. It’s easy to miss the sign to Stagshaw on the main road as it was overgrown when we visited. It may be necessary to park in one of the public car parks and walk to Stagshaw taking care as the traffic can be both speedy and heavy.
It’s free to enter. The plants, the views and the atmosphere will undoubtedly bring an air of calmness and wonder.

A fairly easy going walk until the final section which is quite steep, rewarded with great views from the top and a great photo opportunity at the plinth. The decent can be quite boggy in sections and beware of downhill mountain bikers.Written 6 February 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Sally WMoray, UK32 contributionsNo daffs nodding their heads this time of year but, all the same, a touching tribute to a lost daughter. Although, apparently, the field was initially purchased as a site for the construction of a house for Wordsworth. Take the time to visit the wee kirk, where sit the pews used by Wordsworth and his family.Written 29 July 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC.
