Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

What travellers are saying
- Robert WozEpsom, UK4 contributionsThe tour of Highgate West cemetery lead by Malcolm was exceptionally good. The fascinating stories of deceased occupants really brought it to life. Coupled with the rich wildlife and the rich characters of the dedicated volunteers, it was inspiring. What a nice environment to spend a couple of hours. It made our day out very memorable. Thanks to all.Written 10 January 2025This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.

- AgnesLondon, UK137 contributionsCame across this place totally by chance!!!
It’s nestled between the Southwark high street and the river Thames!!!
It’s the covered bridge entrance that drew me in!!!
At first glance, it’s like sort of Halloween set to me……skulls everywhere ……
But seriousness growing when got knowing the stories behind such place—a graveyard for those nameless female vulnerables and victims exploited by individuals and the society!!!Written 18 November 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. A must visit if this is your thing, the Victorians certainly did death well.Written 7 November 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - keith hChesham, UK1,168 contributionsSo much to be gained from a visit , be it nature in the form of trees , plants , birds & insect life or interesting tombstones to be found - some commemorating people of local repute & interest.
Tower Hamlets Cemetery is now a Park & a Nature Reserve with excellent work being done by The Friends of Tower Hamlets Cemetery Park Charity staff & volunteers.
I first visited last year whilst exploring places of interest in the area & ended up staying & exploring for quite a while.
Whilst it seems that the Park is an oasis in this built up area , you can , in fact, if you have the time & inclination , walk from Victoria Park , onto the Regent's Canal , into Mile End Ecological Park & cut across the green connecting strip of Ackroyd Drive to reach it , so keeping clear of roads & shops.
This time I visited on purpose & enjoyed roaming around the pathways , admiring the Spring flowers & blossoms & it was a very relaxing experience.
If you decide to visit , both Mile End & Bow tube stations are handily near.
Not many people about at the time of my visit ; a few dog walkers & the odd couple enjoying the Spring sunshine.
The Cemetery first opened in 1841 & is one of " The Magnificent Seven " created by the Victorians in answer to the shortage of burial space. These cemeteries ring London & are all of interest , the most famous being Highgate.

It is not possible to walk around between the graves to see a particular monument are the graves a behind metal railings.

We had a guided tour from one of the volunteers and he told us all sorts of interesting things. The cemetery has been taken over quite a bit by nature but that adds to its charm. As it was a heritage day we got to see the crypt too which obviously was creepy! The volunteers were all so welcoming & clearly work so hard. Had a refreshment area with lots of choices including lots of vegan ones which we were very impressed with!! A really interesting day!Written 10 September 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
- ShaunH290London, UK3,019 contributionsThe second of the Magnificent Seven London Cemeteries was consecrated in 1837, at the very start of Queen Victoria's reign. It features 69 Grade II and Grade II* listed buildings and structures, so it is well worth joining the monthly guided tours by the Friends of West Norwood Cemetery (check their website for details) to see the best.
Our knowledgeable and entertaining guide pointed out many of the key memorials and explained some of the stories behind them. There is so much to see. There is currently free parking on the roads around the cemetery on Sundays at least, so it is accessible to those coming from a distance for the afternoon tours.Written 20 December 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tours do operate but not very regularly. It was nice to see that people regarded their pets as they would humans and gave them a resting place and memorial headstone. R.I.P little guys.
It can be seen through the gate on bayswater as you come out of the park past the lodge.Written 10 April 2018This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Well worth a trip to discover some history in beautiful surroundingsWritten 9 March 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews. - ShaunH290London, UK3,019 contributionsThe Charnel House is an example of what London has done so well in recent years - taking an old, often subterranean historical site and turned it into a modern tourist attraction. The London Mithraeum by the Bloomberg Building and the Amphitheatre under the Guildhall are other examples. All presented in a modern way, in this case going back to the Middle Ages, rather than Roman times, they are worth visiting if you are passing.
Here the "glass surfboards" on the wall give lots of details, and a QR code behind the glass window leads to a lovely 3-D rendering of the site itself. The only downside is that there does not seem to be a website for the location, even though I have seen that some people have managed to get tours behind that glass.Written 16 January 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC.
